Moonlight Film Review “Moonlight” directed by Barry Jenkins is a powerful film about a young African male who grows up trapped by his society expectations of masculinity. The film is cut into three different chapters, “Little”, “Chiron” and “Black”, that shows us three stages in the main character Chiron’s life. Chiron first gets bullied at school for being weak and smaller than the other kids, as he grows up people start to notice that he is different, and they discriminate him for his differences. His lives with his drug addicted mother who does little to nothing to help Chiron in times of need and distress. Chiron doesn’t have the presence of a male in his life and house hold so while he grows up he struggles with self identification and …show more content…
You're not a faggot. You can be gay, but you don't have to let nobody call you a faggot. This dialogue really captured me as a viewer because the emotions and aura expressed in this scene was thoughtfully realistic and really captured Little’s innocence. This goes to show how messed up society can be, and the power it can hold over an individual. Not only that but this demonstrates that no matter how much we try to eliminate discrimination it will no be gone completely, but as a parent or guardian you must care for, explain, and listen to their problems and concerns. People want to place him in a category before he even knows what that means Many great cinematic elements were used in the making of this movie, but one that stood out to me was the use of source music. The classical music used signifies Chiron and his inner self. Through all the chaos of his outer environment he is yearning for peace and self expression. The use of source music, in this case classical, really gives us the audience a contrast between how Chiron feels compared to how he is expected to feel. A good example of this is the scene where his mother yells at Chiron at the doorway in their house, and which where only the soundtrack is heard this shows us that Chiron disconnects with his harsh reality to cope with what he must deal …show more content…
The cinematography in this film is undeniably beautiful and every camera and sound choice has a clear purpose, which allows us to feel Chiron’s emotions and what he’s thinking. I would give this film a 4.7 of 5 stars. I really was intrigued by how the movie was split into the three chapters in Chiron’s life, it shows that growing up we may feel like different people from the emotions we feel to the way we look. Nevertheless, all three chapters came together smoothly and with more interpretation you can make connections into how Chiron developed into what he did in the movie. I can’t directly relate with Chiron, but indirectly can for he feels pressure by his society’s expectations of masculinity and for me it is society’s expectation as well as my parents to how I’m supposed to act and achieve in life. This movie really got me thinking how lucky I am to go to a school where for the most part the community is friendly and supportive, and which everyone tries to encourage each other rather than brining each other

Pierrot Lunaire Summary

...Pierrot Lunaire Summary: Pierrot a poet and dandy from Bergamo, is "moondrunk", and intends to present his beloved Columbine with blossoms of moonlight. He daubs his face with moonlight, and the moon washes clothes made of moonbeams. A 'Valse de Chopin' evokes a drop of blood on to the lips of a consumptive. Perrot presents his verses to the Madonna "of all sorrows", and the poet is crucified on his verses. The moon is pale with lovesickness. Part two, are morbid and violent. Night descends when the wings of a giant moth eclipses the sun. Pierrot becomes a blasphemer and a grave-robber whose life will end on the gallows, though between-times he sees the moon as a scimitar that will decapitate him. Last part, is homesickness. The nostalgia for the 'Italian Pantomine of cold', and eventual homecoming to Bergamo from, it seems, Venice, since the penultimate piece is a barcarolle, and since a moonbeam is the rudder of Pierrot's water-lily conveyance. Enacting bygone grotesquence and rogueries, he drills a pipe bowl through the gleaming skull of Cassander, fills it with Turkish tobacco, inserts a cherry pipe stem in the polished surface, and puffs away. He interrupts his midnight serenade to scrape the instrument's bow across Cassander's bald pate. Then, discovering a white spot in the collar of his black jacket, he tries to rub it out, thinking it a fleck plaster, only to discover, in the light of dawn that it was the moon. In the final piece, the poet invoking the fragance of...

...Moonlight The film “Moonlight” is told in three chapters that uses the boy’s name as it evolves over time Little, Chiron, and Black, with each played by a different actor. The film starts off with a young, gay black boy named Chiron, who is referred to as “little” being chased down by a group of bullies from his school. Chiron comes from a broken home with no father figure and a drug addict mother (Naomie Harris). When a local drug dealer named Juan (Mahershala Ali) and his wife Teresa (Janelle Monáe) takes a sudden interest in Chiron, he immediately looks up to them as mentors, despite Juan’s involvement in his mother’s drug habit. Several years later, Chiron (now played by Ashton Sanders) has grown into a lanky high school...

Moonlight Ritual

...The Lunar Light Ritual By: Simon G Will the shadows devour me tonight? Or will fate hang another grain of fear upon my brow? The thoughts engrossed in my mind as I swam my way through the endless sea of night.  A calm breeze circulated about the Gods Wood, bringing with it the serenity of mid-autumn night. It stirred up the fallen ashen leaves, and they performed their nightly ritual – a dainty waltz of shadows, oscillating to the rhythmic chants of the wind, who recited indiscernibly archaic spells from the deep. The ancient Heart Trees sang along in the wind with speech too ancient to be fathomed, empowered by the primal force entombed within the Earth. Shadows in the shapes of man and demon don in robes of night danced to the rhythm. More leaves, thousands of them, began to assemble from all over, forming a storm of greens that swirled about a single point in the clearing where I stood, watching the spectacle, like a prophecy sent as a forewarning of an ill omen that came too late.   Just then, I felt a sharp swing in the temperature of the air. The incantation starts to upsurge and intensify. The melody accompanying the faint recitation began to transpose upwards, higher and higher, with no sign of stopping. The tension and urgency of the mantra increased dramatically. What astonishing feat of necromancy are they performing that they should require so much dark magical power to ensure its success? I wondered. One of the ancient Heart Trees paused in the midst of...

Barr Moonlight Research Paper

...and be submerged into the world the director wants you to see, wants you to feel. Cinema is about the wonderful and imaginative escapism and is an ongoing search into an emotional connection. Film is one of the few means to transport you from your mundane life to this dream world, which unbeknownst to you, is often the world you want to live in the most. Often times I've been watching a movie and I would know what to feel, it feels cheap and artificial but the real control, the best cinema, is when a director forces you to feel something. One of my favorite films, Moonlight, is the chronicles of a gay man growing up and showing the hardship of being an African American man in a drug-riddled Miami. Every single part of the film was flawless, from the storytelling to the acting, down to the music and cinematography. It left me feeling raw and vulnerable and I didn't know whether to hate director...

Essay On Moonlight By Gilman

...Gilman identifies the stereotypical roles for women that serve to reaffirm the dominance of the male in society, to expose the way in which men circumscribe the intellectual growth of women. Gilman’s metaphorical presentation of daylight versus moonlight through the narrator’s analysis of the woman in the paper, who “is always creeping, and most women do not creep by daylight” reinforces the concept of males pushing women into the dark peripheries of moonlight. The male-dominated physical world of “daylight”, reason and structure is a stark contrast to the female inner-world of night where ‘fanciful imagination’2 and disorder can run wild. Another inference of the night-time can serve to reaffirm restricting and confining women to their reproductive...

Amends Adrienne Rich

...Adrienne Rich Describe the tone created in the first three lines In the first three lines, it is quite apparent that this poem is focused on the moon at night, “Nights like this... a white star”. The tone is somewhat mysterious, as it does not describe the moon itself at this point. Chart the actions of the moonlight 1st stanza: Moonlight picking at stones 2nd stanza: Picks at greater stones, laying its cheek on the sand, licking broken ledges, moves up the cliffs, flicks along train tracks, 3rd stanza: Pours into the sand-and-gravel quarry, and leans on the body of an aeroplane 4th stanza: soaks through the cracks of trailers, shines upon sleeping people What is the effect of the repetition of ‘as if’? The effect of the repeated ‘as it’ is to personify the moonlight, it may also create rhythm. What is the significance of the title? The title ‘Amends’ suggests a sense of soothing, and to repair a tough day. With the poem, ‘Amends’ tell us that the moonlight is capable of soothing, a making things better. How is personification been used to convey a technique between the moonlight, the universe, the landscape, objects, and human beings? Moonlight is shown to light on the most little and amazing things on the planet - this accentuated and illustrates an image and how it is always caring and protecting the earth. It is also shown to take care of one: when it says "as it dwells upon the eyelids of the sleepers" it suggests that it finally eases the day at the...
