Moral and ethical issues are matters that have existed since time immemorial. Moral standards and ethical standards are well spelt out even in modern day organizations. It provides bedrock upon which organizations are run. The existing guidelines show people, for instance, employees, what they ought to do at any given time. It is on the same note that codes of conduct exist; they help in detecting any misconduct that may have happened in an organization within various ranks. However, in this context, the Catholic Church comes into perspective in a bold way. Prudence is an essential part of comprehending the intrigues of justice. Moreover, the paper will try to find answers as to why formation of conscience is an imperative matter injustice. The paper will then seek to bring to light the position of the Catholic Church.
Catholic existence spans hundreds of years backwards. This implies that the foundation upon which it was structured has been firm. However, the Church has been dogged with controversy over the years. Some of the matters have been resolved while others have never been touched in any manner, whatsoever. The reasons as to why they have never been solved will always remain a mystery. Moral and ethical issues are matters that have been in the public domain for myriads of years. The Pope, being the captain of the Catholic Church has been charged with ensuring the uninterrupted continuity of the Church's ultimate goal: that of leading a righteous life. The scorecard, however, lies with the public: both Catholics and non-Catholics. Morality in humanity has always been a controversial topic; people have extremely diverse views on the subject, some being very radical. Eventually, the truth will always remain dominant amidst the entire storm (Windley 89).
Justice has different shades depending on the context upon which it is applied. To some people justice means keeping silent when wronged, to others, it means retaliating when wronged, and to others it means being neutral when aggrieved. All these versions point towards a general direction: that of utmost prudence. At which point is it prudent to make any move? Justice takes different shapes depending on the matter at hand. Conscience is also another key component of any justice System. A person needs a clear conscience when making certain decision in life. However, the dispensation of justice is still dependent on a number of factors. All the factors combined then give a perfect recipe for the dispensation of justice. The Catholic Church has been at crossroads in several incidences in the past that raised eyebrows. The Church has the highest Christian following in the face of the planet. The perception of the general public has been on a low because of the controversies that have rocked the church (Windley 89).
The priests of various churches are the representatives of the Pope at the lowest level. They should, therefore, be wary of how they treat their congregations because this might have a negative effect on their leadership. This might in turn scare people away from church. Justice as it is a tricky subject. The indicators of a just society might appear to be pretty much obvious, but that is dissimilar when it reaches the matter of the Catholic Church. It is now known, more than ever that there are certain issues that need to be addressed. They have been assumed over the years, but the Catholic populace and even the non-Catholics are not happy with the manner in which matters justice are sorted in the Catholic Church. It would be the most prudent thing that has ever happened to the Catholic Church (Windley 89).
Among the most talked about issue is that of abortion. This is a moral issue that the justice system of the Church needs to address urgently. Several people have been misguided to believe things that are not factual. This is because there is no proper manner in which the affected people can direct their problems and expect justice. In the formative years of the Church, thousands of people were excommunicated from the Church if they did anything that was contrary to the Bible and the Catholic Church teachings. This was several years ago. Currently, the methods of justice administration have changed in a significant manner. The basic principles of the Catholic Church have not metamorphosed much, though.
Abortion involves the disruption of a normal pregnancy before its due date. This means that after conception, the fetus is supposed to go full cycle in order to be born while mature. However, this has not been happening, especially in the recent years. Due to different reasons, the mother of an unborn child might find it convenient to terminate the pregnancy if she so wishes. This is the true picture of the current society. Women procure abortions because of different reasons. There are women who procure abortion because of rape. These are the women that have been raped in different situations that they could have found themselves then they are left to carry pregnancies that they cannot connect to. To these women, carrying a pregnancy is a constant reminder of the ordeal that they went through when conceiving. They will be depressed as seconds turn into hours in their gestation period. It is at these times that they will dispense justice the best way they know how: by procuring an abortion. To those women, undertaking an abortion is an act that cleanses them of their dark past. They believe that by procuring an abortion then they will have deleted the memories that come with the rape.
Some women procure abortions because they feel that will not be able to support their unborn children. They, therefore, go ahead and terminate those pregnancies to avoid future financial constraints. There are some women who do no not have even enough money to cater for themselves, so to them they fear the unforeseen future. To them, that is a battle that they are going to lose. According to the secular society, there are times that abortion is allowed. The aforementioned cases are just some, but a few instances where abortion is allowed. However, it is not done legally. In most of the aforementioned cases, the abortions are done by quacks. Sadly, some of these illegal pursuits end up in loss of lives. This adds to the twist. The legality of abortion in the Catholic Church is a crisis that has been handled unsatisfactorily over the years, and it is not going anywhere: at least it is still here to stay. The Catholic Church has been the center stage of all these drama. This has been attributed to the Church’s stand on abortion.
According to the Ten Commandments that are available even in the "Catechism of the Catholic Church," abortion is not an option. The "Though shall not kill" commandment is well drafted in that particular article. This cements the Church's move to ban abortions. The Catholic Church has even been in the news over the recent years as opposed to the use of contraceptives. The Church argues that life begins at conception, not when the womb gets larger. Factually speaking, that is correct. However, in terms of justice with respect to prudence and consciousness, that statement is controversial (Konstant 57).
The Catholic Church has been fighting the practice as a moral issue. All those people who engage in abortions are evil, with reference to the principles of the Church. Does the Church observe the situation under which the abortions were procured? The Church does not want to know all these: an abortion is just that, an abortion. This has led the masses to ask critical questions. People wonder whether the church is offering selective justice. For instance, there are several priests that have been accused of involving themselves in sexual uncleanliness. Most of the cases have never been handled to date. The three recent Popes have been accused of a cover up in the Church. This is mainly because they are criticizing one perceived sin while practicing another (Konstant 56).
Justice has never been prudently delivered. Abortion, for instance, is a grave issue that needs the sanity of the Church. The Church ought to be willing to listen to both sides of the argument. That is when justice will be considered to have an element of prudence and conscience. Conscience is imperative in any justice system.The Catholic Church must ensure that all the pending issues are handled in an appropriate manner. The Catholic Church should wake up and start handling the issue objectively.
There are reasons for and against abortion; however, the society will always decide what is right and what is wrong regardless of the Catholic Church’s definition of abortion. Many people have openly disregarded the teaching as backward and gone ahead to procure abortions thus risking their lives. The Church needs to address the issue once again because lives are being lost inhumanly. The society should also not support the vice blindly. This is because sex will lose its meaning. Women will be having unplanned pregnancies and fear nothing because nothing will be done to castigate them. The society needs an awakening call that will improve the social sobriety of the populace (Konstant 56).
The Catholic Church should therefore come out strongly and justify its stand on abortion; a moral issue. This will be effective in reducing the moral decadence that has been evident in the society. The Church ought to speak out loudly and firmly on these issues. However, the Church should not be insensitive to the realities in the society. Eventually, the justice system in the Church will be held responsible for the rot that is evident in the society, especially on moral issues. There is no justification for delayed justice, at least within the Christian cycles. The Church should be at the forefront of condemning injustices in the society. However, the church can only achieve that if it also does its share: by dispensing justice through all possible means. The Church cannot be excused to make mistakes. Perfection is the very least that the Church ought to aspire to achieve.
