...OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES This study aims to know on how Social Networking Media “FACEBOOK” effects the study habit of the college students nowadays. According to the article “The Effects of excessive use of facebook to the Study Habits of BC25 students of Suniversity”, it say’s that students can easily communicate with one another.Communicating to other people can be easy by using facebook eventhough a person is miles a way from you, and through this they gain new friends. But still facebook had its bad effect on the part of the students, Facebook has become the biggest distraction for students when trying to get homework done. Students using facebook most of the time would end up getting lower grades. Paul Kirschner, author and professor at the Center for Learning Sciences and Technologies at the Open University of The Netherlands, say’s that "The problem is that most people have Facebook or other social networking sites, their e-mails and maybe instant messaging constantly running in the background while they are carrying out other tasks, the students who used Facebook had grade point averages of 3.06, which doesn't seem too bad when the scale goes from 0.0 to 4.0.However, those who turned off the social media network when it came time to hit the books had a typical GPA of 3.82. In addition, non-users also said they studied more often -- spending an average...

...“How the Facebook age has influenced changes in human behavior.” In the past, many people were limited to who they were able to interact with, and most online communication occurred through electronic mails. The amount of information exchanged was very limited because many computers were not yet capable of holding vast amounts of data and the speed in which the information was transferred was not fast enough. But with the advancement in broadband technology, also came the expansion of communication channels. The thirst for instant communication resulted in the creation of social networks such as Facebook. After its beginning in 2004, Facebook revolutionized the way people interacted with each other online, and gave users the opportunity to directly connect and communicate in a much faster way. Companies can now use the social media platform as a way to advertise their products; people can now instantly let everyone know how they feel, what they ate for breakfast, and that great show they attended the night before with even a picture, and the map of the place it was taken from. Even presidential candidates have used Facebook to promote their campaigns. By being able to connect with more people outside of one’s social circles, people can now expand their network and take their opinion to a much wider audience. Facebook has played an important role in shaping the current generations by creating a direct web of communications between its users all over the world; but with the...

...population has an internet connection today. In 1995, it was less than 1%. The number of internet users has increased tenfold from 1999 to 2013. The first billion was reached in 2005. The second billion in 2010. The third billion in 2014 (ICT Facts and Figures). Many countries gained open access the Internet due to the rapid advances in information technology within the last twenty years (Ishfag and Tehmina, 2011, p. 5022) One of the most popular and recognized forms used in the Internet are social networking sites (SNS) such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Google+, and etc. People of all ages are flocking to the Internet and are signing up for social networking sites by the millions. The quick rise in popularity of SNS began in the second half of the last decade partly because of their extensive usage by school and university students (Kirschner and Kaspinski, 2010, p. 1239) Facebook, for example, has now over 1.15 billion users, one million web pages are accessed using the “Login with Facebook” feature, 23% of FB users login at least 5 times per day. The popularity of online social networking sites (SNSs) is constantly growing. Since the creation of social networking sites (SNSs), they have quickly become a persuasive way for people to connect and interact online all over the world. The creation of social networking sites is a phenomenal technological evolution in the world Web applications. The study of Jabr (2011) found that SNSs are making tremendous effect nearly...

Wiedenbeck Available online 9 June 2010 Abstract Formed on an analysis of design practices, the behaviour chain model stipulates that social network designer’s ultimate aim is to encourage users to adopt the social network site by entering a phase of true commitment. During this phase, social network users are driven to connect to known or unknown others by engaging in instrumental uses that create value and content and involve others, while staying active and loyal by investing time in the site. This paper investigates how designer’s intentions, as captured by the behaviour chain model, materialise through users’ reported practices in the social network site Facebook. A total of 423 Facebook users from 5 countries answered a questionnaire that allowed us to examine how 2 user characteristics, experience with the site, and culture, shape the nature of true commitment. Our findings show that experience with the site and even more so, culture, have an effect on users’ motivations...

...survey on Facebook and Academic Performance in Nigeria Universities. Dr P.M. Ogedebe, J.A.Emmanuel, Y.Musa Dept. of Computer Science Bingham University, Nigeria Abstract This paper test students’ facebook usage and their academic performance. The paper was also intended to find how pervasive the use of facebook by University students plays a role in their academic success. A 20 question questionnaire was designed and sent out to approximately 150 students of different Universities in Nigeria. To capture the main types of University, a Federal University, a State University and a Private University cut across the nation were chosen. Of the questionnaire sent out, 81% of them were within the age of 18 to 21. The Independent variables measured how actively students used facebook, including how much time they spend on facebook, how often they update their status, post on friends’ walls, comment on others’ pages, the level of their privacy settings, and how many friends and photo albums they have. In order to accurately measure students’ academic achievement, we had student’s self‐report their in‐class participation, attendance, as well as grade point average. Six pre‐determined hypotheses were tested. First, the more time a student spends on facebook, the lower grade point average the student has. Secondly, the higher a student’s privacy settings are on facebook, the higher that student’s grade point average is. Thirdly, the more a student updates his or her facebook status, the...

...the Relationship of Facebook Usage and Loneliness Research Proposal (it was NOT conducted) Abstract The popularity of Facebook among internet users has increased, yet at the same time people start noticing the negative life influence that Facebook brings to its users. The present study furthers our understanding in how the use of Facebook affects one’s feeling of loneliness among fresh graduates who are experiencing life changing events. We look at the number of Facebook friends users have, the amount of time they spend on Facebook, the number of status posted, the number of post liked by others, and the number of pieces of personal information they share. We expect to see a strong correlation between general Facebook use and users’ sense of loneliness. However, the number of like received from others might not have a direct relationship with users’ loneliness. Result of our study could be applied to the educational field, where both teachers and students could benefit. Introduction As social media is getting more popular, Facebook is one of the few social networking sites that have generated great attention. It provides people a platform for communication and a wide range of functions, such as posting status reflecting their daily lives, liking other’s status or photo by clicking the thumb, and to share users’ personal data with others. According to the Statistics Portal (2014), Facebook is the world's leading social networking websites with 1,280 million...

...------------------------------------------------- “Hey Mom, What’s on Your Facebook? Comparing Facebook Disclosure and Privacy in Adolescents and Adults “ Abstract: People of all ages are increasingly exposed to online environments that encourage them to share and connect with others. However, there is a perception that adolescents are particularly susceptible to these cues and share more online than do other age groups. With a group of 288 adolescents and 285 adults, we explored differences and similarities in use of Facebook for information sharing and use of the controls to protect their privacy. Adolescents reported disclosing more information on Facebook and using the privacy settings less than adults. Despite these differences, the results indicated that adolescents and adults were more similar than different in the factors that predicted information disclosure and control. Adolescents spent more time on Facebook, which partially mediated the relationship between group (adolescents vs. adults) and disclosure. Self-esteem partially mediated the relationship between group and information control, with adults having higher self-esteem than adolescents. Readings: Keywords privacy, self-disclosure, social media, online communication The news is filled with stories about the dangers of sharing personal information online, the difficulties in protecting personal privacy, and the privacy challenges of websites such as Google and Facebook. Despite wide proclamations that ‘‘pri-...

...CHAPTER 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES This chapter discusses foreign and local that can be attributed in the success of this undertaking. Difference and similarities with the previous studies are presented in this chapter. The following researches and studies greatly influence on the conduct of this study; the researchers have made consideration in drawing the final conclusion in the study. Foreign Literature Facebook is an evolutionary technology of the 21st century that changed social relationships, provides opportunity for individuals to share their ideas and opinions, and establishes and maintains relationships with others. Facebook allows a user to create a profile, display personal information, upload pictures, access other users profile, display personal information, accumulate friends, and interact with friends via messages and gifts. An average time of 30 minutes to 2 hours is spent on Facebook daily. Only recently are studies beginning to examine the effects of Facebook on physical, mental, and family health. Current studies conducted in college campuses reveal that Facebook can cause similar symptoms to drug addiction, effect familial systems and patterns contribute to upper respiratory infection, cause feelings of loneliness, depression, and narcissism, and can lead to less body satisfaction and worse time management according to Kalpidou, Costin and Morris (2011). Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg and his roommates at Harvard University and...

...Impact of Online Social Network on American College Students’ Reading Practices By SuHua Huang and Matthew Capps Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate social networking sites (SNS) and ways college students spend their time on both conventional academic and recreational reading. A total of 1,265 (466 male and 799 female) college students voluntarily participated in the study by completing a self-report survey. Descriptive analysis indicated that the average amount of time students spent (M) on academic reading (AR), recreational reading (RR), and social networking (SN) was 7.72 hours, 4.24 hours, and 16.13 hours per week, respectively. When compared with various classifications, freshmen students spent more time on SN (M=18.05 hours) and less time on both AR (M= 6.22 hours) and RR (M=3.47 hours) than other groups. A zero-order correlation statistical analysis indicated socializing with others by using some social networking sites (SNS) (e.g., Facebook) was positively correlated with college students’ recreational reading (RR), but was not correlated with academic reading (AR). Introduction Research on college students has indicated a number of different outcomes associated with particular types of college students’ experiences (e.g., contact with professors, students’ attitudes, motivations, and activities) and differences among types of institutions and subgroups of students (Kelly & Lee, 2009). However, spending time in reading is one important...

...2011 The Facebook Epidemic What happened to face-to-face visits, dates, and just sitting down and talking with someone to sincerely get to know them? Why has the world settled for a simple Facebook message, or email? Mark Zuckerburg created a social network that connected the world; a social network so large that if its users were a country, it would be the third largest in the world. Facebook’s mission statement is "to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected” (Facebook). Facebook is useful for certain types of communication and connectivity, but it has also contributed to an underlying epidemic that may, if used excessively, redefine interpersonal relationships forever. These relationships will be redefined, ironically, by further disconnecting people even though Facebook facilitates easy communication and more access to connections. Facebook has revolutionized what it means to communicate with someone and what it means to be connected, and whether or not these changes have been beneficial or detrimental to relationships has been a hot topic among many scholars. Some scholars say that Facebook is beneficial for relationships. They claim that Facebook has made it easier to stay in contact with others, easier to express oneself to people online, that it enlarges their social circle, and they say that it makes it easier to connect and communicate with people that have meaning in their life. This is a valid argument because Facebook has opened...

...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Facebook is known to be the most famous social networking sites in the world. It was created by Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin on Febuary 2004. Facebook was originally created for Harvard students only, for them to keep in touch when they were away from the campus, but the site has been now expanded worldwide and has about billion active users and majority of these are college students. With the rapid changes to our generation, youth is now more demanding in acquiring technologies that will suit to their needs, especially in their studies. Certainly, the access in Internet or in the World Wide Web is easy and there are many benefits can be gained. The use of this accessibility is applied mostly on the professionals such as medical practitioners, business tycoons, and even government officials. The purpose of their usage the Internet is different in terms of their needs and various marketers also applied their expertise on it. Apparently, the growing numbers of users are members of different social networking sites and most of them are students. Social networking such as Facebook, one of the largest social networking sites and many others has been plagued the websites of the Internet accessibility. Many individuals, mostly students and their friends are engaged in social networking. Social networks are made to entertain and to interact with the other people even if they are far away. ...for people to share information instantly and communicate with people all around the world. Facebook is the most outstanding example of successful social media network. According to the first quarter 2015 earnings announcement by Facebook, the site has achieved 1.44 billion active users per month, and 65% of which are daily active users. Other social networking sites such as Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn are also a powerful means of communication. With such a large audience, social networking sites provide ample opportunities to acquire information, network, and connect with friends. Besides from the obvious benefits that social media brings to our lives, there are some other effects that it has on its users’ wellbeing. This paper examines how people’s tendency when using social networking sites affects their level of self-esteem. Introduction The introduction of social media has revolutionized the way people interact, since social interactions can now take place anywhere that has Internet coverage. Thanks to social media, people no longer need to meet face-to-face in order to know how another person is doing. Social networking sites serve as a place for users to share information about themselves, from the simplest things like what they have for dinner and who they hang out with, to more personal things like their thoughts and emotions. By simply logging into sites such as Facebook or Instagram, people can easily see updates of their friends and family. Similarly, even when...

...l e i n f o Article history: Available online 26 January 2013 Keywords: Social media Higher education Facebook Twitter Blogs Educational technology a b s t r a c t The ubiquity of social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter) is no more apparent than at the university. Social media are increasingly visible in higher education settings as instructors look to technology to mediate and enhance their instruction as well as promote active learning for students. Many scholars argue for the purposeful integration of social media as an educational tool. Empirical evidence, however, has lagged in supporting the claim. Most of the existing research on the utility and effectiveness of social media in the higher education class is limited to self-reported data (e.g., surveys, questionnaires) and content analyses. This paper summarizes the scholarly writings as well as reviews the findings of empirical investigations. Some limitations are discussed, and future areas of research are proposed. Ó 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. 1. Introduction The growth of social media and other Web 2.0 technologies is unprecedented (Lenhart, Purcell, Smith, & Zickuhr, 2010). Social media technology has become an essential part of personal life as users generate content, share photos, choose to ‘‘like’’, or interact in a game. The ubiquity of social media is no more apparent than at the university where the technology is...
