In the Morgentaler V. The Queen case, Dr. Morgentaler faced three prosecutions from the Quebec provincial government for performing abortions. In the first trial in 1973, the jury found him not guilty but the appeal court changed that decision and convicted him, sending him to prison. The second trial in 1975 ended with another acquittal by the jury, soon after, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau introduced the Morgentaler Amendment, which stopped appeal courts from overturning a jury’s not guilty verdict. In the third trial in 1976, Dr. Morgentaler was acquitted again, and when the Parti Québécois came into power that same year, they chose not to continue with any prosecutions; this decision finally put an end to Dr. Morgentaler’s legal struggles
