...birth of Mandy Masters in 1961, the doctor whispered to her mother that she didn’t have to keep her. Mandy was one of over 10,000 babies born globally with a disability caused by the drug Thalidomide. Born without arms, she was given a life expectancy of no more than 19 years; now at age 54, Mandy is starting to feel the painful effects of her life-long compensation for her disability (Cawley, 2013). Thalidomide was originally produced by the German pharmaceutical company Grunenthal, as an anticonvulsant. Early tests showed that the drug was inadequate for this purpose but had sedative properties. The drug was later used as a sleeping pill and prescribed to pregnant women to treat morning sickness. When the damage...

Let Me Know

...sea. Being hungry himself, Adrian made his way to the kitchen. His parents always waited for him, breakfast ready and in normal routine. He loved my parents more than anything. Sometimes he’d stay up late at night., wondering what he would do if suddenly they weren't there to greet him in the morning. What if one day he woke up, went to the kitchen, and saw no one? No Dad. No Mom. No little Skye. Just him. All alone. That wasn’t the case today, though. He walked into the kitchen and there they were, already awake, radiant in the morning light that poured in through the perfectly clear glass. His dad had his computer tablet in his arm and was going through files, while his mom was standing at the stove, making pancakes. Little Skye was in her high chair, giggling every time a bubble she made with her mouth popped. Adrian chuckled at the amused baby, then took his own seat, causing his dad to look up from his tablet. "Good morning, Adrian,” his dad said warmly. His voice was ocean deep. It had the calming effect of a gentle tide. His face made a steady transition to his neck, which flowed to his rippling shoulders. His eyes were blue as the ocean and as deep as an abyss. "Good morning," he replied. Adrian wished his voice was as low as his father’s. At eighteen, he was pretty sure his voice was done getting lower, though. "How do you feel, sweetheart?" his mother asked. Her voice was gentle, soft, elegant. Her words came out gracefully. It was like her voice was made for his...

Thalidomide History

...Thalidomide’s history is one of the darkest in pharmaceutical history. Today, Thalidomide is still used in the treatment of leprosy and multiple myeloma. Till date Thalidomide’s exact mode of action, essential to its efficacy is unclear and research in the last decade has led to the proposal of 16 possible mechanisms. Details of Thalidomide’s molecular mechanism and its molecular targets can help to reveal analogues lacking the teratogenic effects. This report will particularly focus on some of the recent studies into Thalidomide’s teratogenic mode of action on malignant MM cells; specifically its mode of action on cereblon (CRBN) in MM. Results Studies have revealed that Thalidomide directly binds with CRBN, a protein that forms a complex with E-3 ubiquitin ligase activity along with its binding partners, cullin-4A (CUL4A), DNA-binding protein-1(DBP1) and regulator of cullins-1(ROC1). When Thalidomide binds to CRBN, it is thought that CRBN recruits and binds substrate proteins in this complex resulting in the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway of the proteins, Ikaros (IKZF1) and Aiolos (IKZF3). These transcription factors are essential for B cell, T cell and plasma cell development. Supporting this theory, Thalidomide-resistant MM patient cells were analysed retrospectively. Results showed that patients had suppressed levels of CRBN, and thus suppressed levels of IKF1 and IKF3 in myeloma cells. This reduced patient sensitivity to Thalidomide and Thalidomide resistant cell line under-expressed...

Venus Research Paper

... This collision could have altered its rotational path. It also takes 243 Earth days to rotate once on its axis, but it only takes 225 Earth days to orbit around the Sun compared to the Earth’s 365. Its rotation and proximity to the Sun are responsible for the extreme temperature of the planet. It holds an average surface temperature of 462 degrees Celsius. Since Venus does not tilt on its axis, there is no seasonal variation as well. The dense atmosphere (containing 96.5% carbon dioxide) traps the heat on the planet and results in a greenhouse effect. Venus has played a role in the folk lore of many early civilizations. Early civilizations believed that Venus was made of two different bodies. It gets the nicknames the “Morning Star” and “Evening Star” because it appears not very long before sunrise and it must set a few hours after the Sun. The Babylonians named Venus “Istar”. It had the personification of a woman and the mother of the gods. They described her as the “the bright torch of heaven.” Istar was regarded as being responsible for the world’s fertility. There was a legend formed about Istar that she went to the Underworld to search for her dead lover Tammuz, and all life on Earth started to die. The gods intervened and revived Tammuz and Istar was restored to the world. The Greeks called these two bodies Phosphorus and Hesperus, and the Romans called them Lucifer and Vesper. Both the Greeks and Romans practiced Venus-worship and erected temples in her honor. Venus-worship...

...The Ritz-Carlton Case Study Few brands attain such a high standard of customer service as the luxury hotel, The Ritz-Carlton. The Ritz-Carlton dates back to the early 20th century and the original Ritz-Carlton Boston, which revolutionized the way US travelers viewed and experienced customer service and luxury in a hotel. The Ritz-Carlton Boston was the first of its kind to provide guests with a private bath in each guest room, fresh flowers throughout the hotel, and an entire staff dressed in formal white tie, black tie, or morning coat attire. In 1983, hotelier Horst Schulze and a four-person development team acquired the rights to the Ritz-Carlton name and created the Ritz-Carlton concept as it is known today: a company-wide concentration on both the personal and functional side of service. The five-star hotel provides impeccable facilities but also takes customer service extremely seriously. Its credo is, “We are Ladies and Gentlemen serving ladies and Gentlemen.” According to the company’s Web site, the Ritz-Carlton “pledge(s) to provide the finest personal service and facilities for our guests who will always enjoy a warm, relaxed, yet refined ambience.” The Ritz-Carlton fulfills this promise by providing peccable training for its employees and executing its Three Steps of Service and 12 Service Values. The Three Steps of Service state that employees must use a warm sincere greeting always using the guest’s name, anticipate and fulfill each guest’s needs, and...

Parking Permits

...Ashley M. Taylor English 102 Professor Catanese “Pining for Parking spots” Its 7:45 Monday morning and you’re on the road to campus and hoping that a parking spot is available. Not only do students face this dilemma, but teachers do as well. Some professors are tardy to classes due to traffic but what about the major traffic that comes with trying to find a parking spot on campus? The morning rush of various professionals during the day is time consuming and everyone seems to have some place to go and they are in a rush to get there. Students who live off-campus have to worry about the possibilities of having to miss a class as a result of no parking on campus. With this ongoing dilemma directly affecting the students and faculty, I propose that USC opens another parking garage on campus to better accommodate these people. If the University of South Carolina were to build at least two new parking garages on campus, I guarantee that the complaints about the lack of parking on campus would decrease, and attendance by students as well as professors would not be directly affected by the strain of parking spots on campus. As a result of construction of the Patterson dormitory, USC housing has the stressful task of trying to find proper housing for the incoming freshman of the fall semester. The dorms normally reserved for upperclassmen such as East, South and West Quad, as well as the horseshoe apartments are now being occupied by freshmen and upperclassmen must scramble...
