...Chemical Senses Eric Gunderson PSY/345 - Sensation and Perception June 27, 2016 Matthew Will Chemical Senses The five senses of human experience are well known to most everyone: we can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell. However, the science behind them is not as well known. The first three (sight, audibility, and touch) are senses in which external stimuli are perceived by a person through the by-product (i.e. reflection of light, pressure changes in air, pressure/stretching/vibration) of an environmental object. The latter two, taste and smell, are senses in which external stimuli have to physically enter into a person in order for him or her to experience the sensation. The sensations themselves are activated by chemical reactions from the external stimuli as opposed to light and pressure changes that the other senses employ. The chemical sensations smell and taste are interactively working together. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail just this. The first thing that will be discussed is how smell and taste affect each other and which one of the two one would change to make a meal taste better, followed by a description of the sensory elements that must be present to emphasize the connection between the chemical senses, emotional memories, and the brain in order to make the most memorable meal of one’s life, and concluded by a description of the connection created between the chemical senses, emotional memories, and the brain. How Smell and Taste...

...A memorable trip to a historic site Introduction Throughout life, we all have visited different places or historical sites, so memorable that you cannot avoid sharing that experience to your friends and love ones. As a former member of the US military, I consider myself very fortunate to travel and visit historic places and museums, and at the same time serving my country and the Air Force, one of the finest military organizations in the world. In my own unique experience, I visited a country that I thought I would never dream to visit if not for my career in the US military. The temporary assignment to Incirlik base in Turkey, the bus ride, the visit to the birthplace of Saint Paul the Apostle and a Muslim tour guide to the city of Tarsus, was one of the most memorable trips in my life. Temporary duty to Turkey I love to travel, and visited many different countries, but this particular trip a temporary duty to Incirlik air base in Turkey, without my family was a very unique experience for me. This trip was so memorable that I constantly think about it and share this experience to my friends and family every time I have the opportunity. What is so unique about this trip is that, as an American and a Christian, I am visiting a Muslim country that has a long history of Christianity. Numerous Christian Apostles and Saints were born in Turkey, but in this particular trip, I was interested in visiting the city of Tarsus, birthplace of Saint Paul the Apostle. Tarsus...

...A Memorable Event The average human will go through billions of events throughout they're lifetime. Some events vary compared to others, some being more memorable, life changing, or forgotten. Regardless of the events, whether big or small, the human brain uses it to shape new events in the future. While the individual will forget some easily, others will remain engraved in the heart of an individual. The most powerful memories remain in the heart leaving often unforgettable images and events for a longer period of time, and probably the whole of their life, and form an unforgettable memory, are among the most memorable events in the life of a person. Deeply engraved events have a profound influence on the life of the individual. Nonetheless, some teach lessons, while others are memories of happiness and love. Above all, the most memorable events are those that are life changing. This essay focuses on a major memorable event that happened to me at a quite tender age, and which taught me an important lesson, which I still find of use and influence up to this stage of my life. If I close my eyes and think about my life since my childhood period to the present stage of my life, I recount many things and major events that I have experienced. However, it is possible that these are not all the experiences I have had in my life, as I did not master the less important events. There are those events that I treasure, and find hard to forget, while others are mere memories of the past...

...Thomas Sammartino Professor Hargraves College Writing 1005-004 16 February 2015 Lambeau Field Lambeau Field is one of the most iconic and historic football stadiums in America. Only few have had the opportunity to visit the “frozen tundra” first hand and experience the greatest football city in the United States. Being a lifelong Packers fan, it has been something out of my wildest dreams to go to Lambeau Field and experience a Packers game in person. Experiencing the Packer fans, the different kinds of foods and aromas, and seeing the players perform right in front of my eyes is what made this experience so memorable. Watching the Green Bay Packers play live at Lambeau Field was one of the most memorable moments of my life. The most passionate fans I have ever seen are the Green Bay Packers fans. Ever since I stepped off the plane in Green Bay, the only colors I saw were green and gold. The Green Bay local supported their Packers to the point where it looked like people were from a different planet if they were not wearing the teams colors. Game day for the Green Bay fans is like Christmas in other cities. Not one person is working and everyone is either at home preparing for the game or at Lambeau tailgating at the crack of dawn. There is one Packer fan who takes it up a notch for his passion for the packers and that is St. Vincent Lombardi. Dressed in a green robe with gold accents and packer logo on his hat, this fan dresses as a bishop with the name of one of the...

...BS4294 | Lifestyle Consumption and Experience Economies | Case Study: Tourism and Gastronomy. | | Clarice | 12/14/2011 | “The study of gastronomy clearly has relevance to education and training in the hospitality industry. Accepting that hospitality is based on human exchange ‘undertaken to enhance the mutual well-being of the parties concerned’, then offering advice on what to eat and drink, explaining how these relate to the town’s or region’s culture, and suggesting where and when to find them at their best, are all part of this human exchange which can certainly affect the well-being of the visitor “(Santich 2004, p.15). | Introduction The term gastronomy has been defined in many ways and is evolving overtime. It used to describe sophisticated dishes prepared for the nobility but there are now much wider and even differing definitions. Food tourism can be considered as “a subset of cultural tourism” – to learn through an experience about a previously unknown or very specific culture and environment (Santich 2004). Consequently, one contribution of food is to provide tourists a greater experience. As tourists have to eat and generally at least partially participate in local food experiences, gastronomy has always implicitly been part of the tourism experience. Nowadays, gastronomy takes people to travel to other countries to taste and to know what other people eat, and how do they make such a delicious dish. The gastronomy tourism is a perfect example...

...further detail of the event it is important to gain better understanding of the main concepts identified for this essay, namely events and experience. Within this body of work the author is attempting to explore the reasoning behind the classification of the chosen event as an experience. For this reason a closer look into the concepts of experience and experience economy is provided in the context of events. The various dimensions and levels of experience, as well as event experiences and the meanings attached to them are discussed in the literature review. The selected event is analyzed with the help of the discussed literature in order to establish its classification as an experience with final conclusions drawn at the end. Literature review In order to explore why a specific event is classified as an experience, the following literature review discussing the identified concepts of events and experience is provided. These concepts are explained with the help of various authors’ work, and the definitions and further aspects they describe are discussed. Experience Experiences are defined by Pine & Gilmore (1999) as “events that engage individuals in a personal way”, thus an event is only an experience if a person participates and is involved and engaged physically, mentally, emotionally, socially or spiritually. As a result of an experience, a change in knowledge, skills, memory or emotion should occur. The participation in such an event requires a conscious and intentional...

...The Unforgettable Marvelous City Luana Zap University of Minnesota Abstract Memorable places are mysterious sources of happiness in each person as their remembrances of these arise. Rio de Janeiro has that special ability of brightening up my day simply from the memories that come up as I recall my family and my trip to this unforgettably Marvelous City in 2013. My expectations of this place were based off previous knowledge of its wonderful scenery, which was the main purpose for our destination choice. I soon discovered though, that Rio is a magical place, full of surprises at every corner as smells, touch and taste even, add to the experience of viewing such amazing landscapes. It became a memorable place in no time, as it provided a perfect setting for the formation of pleasant moments with my family. I sensed a bond created between this location and myself throughout the trip, which is understood through the analysis of the place attachment theory. Each of three dimensions in the PPP model used by Scannel and Gifford influenced the way in which this strong connection was formed. The aspects, person, process and place demonstrate how one’s cultural background could create more powerful links between an individual and their immediate environment. The use of space as a method of interaction, or the proxemics theory, also shows reasons why Rio de Janeiro became so memorable to me by explaining how distinct distances are used by different cultures in order to effectively...

...college early, or take other alternative learning routes, like internships, that year? I strongly disagree that student should skip senior year and do other things like volunteering. They could still go to school and volunteering, having the opportunity to college early is a nice but the question is, are they ready for the transitions. Their senior year is not a waste in my opinion because being a senior provides fun experiences and you still take classes that you may need or want for college. 2. Do you think students need the fourth year of high school to be emotionally ready for college?...

...Memorable Day of My Life Life is made up of events and experiences. But all of these are not equally important and memorable. Some of these are pleasant and they remain evergreen in minds. My first day at school is such an event. It was the month of January, 2007. I was then only six years old. My father proposed that I should be admitted into a school in class one the next day. I felt very excited. I could not think of anything else. I was always thinking about the school, the teachers as I watched on the TV. I could not even sleep well that night. The next morning my mother woke me early in the morning. She washed me very well, combed my hair and dressed in new clothes. Then I had breakfast and started for the school with my father. He took me to the nearest NHF Primary School of our locality at 9.30 am. The school was not very far from our home. So we walk all the way. When I stepped inside the school compound with my father I was somewhat afraid finding myself in a new environment. My heart began to beat. At first he asked my name and some other easy questions. I could answer all of them. Then I was taken to the class room just at 10.00 a.m. Our class teacher Md. Khalilur Rahman appeared before us. We all stood up to show him respect. The class lasted 35 minutes and all the time he treated us as his friends and spoke in a polite manner. Finally, he gave us Home work. When the bell rang, he left the class. I had four other periods with a break of 20 minutes. I found that...

...The most memorable part of my practicum experience was the work I completed for my intervention project. I individually worked with a second-grade student. Throughout the course of the five weeks I taught the young lady pro-social skills. This was not my first encounter working independently with a student. However, I can definitely say this is my most memorable experience. The young lady was described as slightly aggressive and she did not know how to appropriately interact with her peers. I quickly realized that a portion of this behavior was a result of the young lady’s cleft palate. Her cleft palate made it difficult to speak and to be understood and the student’s in her classroom, were not the most cordial when it came to her. Therefore,...

...A Home cooked memorable Meal When is the last time that you enjoyed sharing a good meal that you cooked with that someone special? Many of us can make a dish or meal that tastes good or even great but very few can make meals that are both enjoyable and memorable. Why is that? Some dishes taste great, some dishes look great but very few look and taste great, and even fewer are made in someone’s home. Wouldn’t it be awesome to share a marvelous dinner with that someone special; one that will be remember long after the day is gone. By following a few simple steps, and using imagination a fantastic home cooked meal can be had that will be fondly remembered for decades. The first thing to focus on is to research the type/s of food and drinks both diners will enjoy, the environment/s that brings out importance or comfort and a specific time for the meal. Look for what types of foods both diners like. The meat, vegetables, breads, and what kind of drinks. This does not show what to choose, or how to cook the meal as there are many wonderful recipes that can be found online. Instead I will be showing how to put your dining experience together. For this example I will use one of my favorite meals. I start with bruschetta and a Cesar salad followed by a thinly sliced roast beef covered in a spicy bouillabaisse, with whole green beans, potatoes au gratin served with freshly baked black forest bread and a lightly chilled Brazilian red wine. Next look for a place that both diner enjoy. It...

...to the quality of education between the two types of learning environments. Online courses have great advantages, offering students the flexibility to learn on their own time. Classroom courses boast face-to face-interactions, which is hard to replicate in the online classroom setting. Although online learning can be a great enhancement to in-class learning, it should not replace the classroom experience due to the interaction between the professor and the student, development of peer relationships, and the effectiveness of the in-class learning setting. Before the two types of courses can be compared, it is important to distinguish and define their features. In-class courses refer to traditional lectures, where the students attends class at scheduled times, participating in live discussions with their peers and professors. Online learning utilizes the Internet to connect students with each other and the professor, providing course material through a website, and discussions through email and online forums. One factor that greatly influences the student’s learning experience is the interaction between students and their professors. Classroom learning provides the opportunity for the professor to adapt class material to the students’ responses, making the material more relevant to the students. Online learning mostly follows a rigid teaching structure, hardly allowing any adjustments, even if the student is having difficulties understanding course concepts. In the classroom...

...A Memorable Talk If you ask me what scenes impress me most? I will tell you a simple but memorable talk with my classmate. I could well remember it happened on the way to a gathering with my high school classmates, which was held in a cafe in the last spring festival. At that day, I dressed a little different with a pair of minipants and a shiny Martin boots, and most importantly, I made up a bit for the first time in my life. So on the way to the cafe, my high school classmate immediately flattered me and complemented on how I looked beautifully with the changes I made, driving me to be so proud of myself. However, not long later, the idea of me being the most beautiful and successful one among my classmates soon vanished. It broke my heart and even embarrassed me when she told me she had read a great amount of books over the past year, coveing philosophy, psychology, and a book of autobiography . Besides, she travelled around our country with nobody but her own self. I doubted her courage but she assured me that it was after reading those books that changed her mind. They gave her great inspiration. She told me all the interesting things happened in the past year, and suggested me to grab the opportunity of studying in college for it could really make some differences in my life. What a confident, active and intelligent girl she is. Her amazing experiences are completely out of my expectation, for in my opinion she was once a most chicken-hearted student who didn't dare...
