In 1939 Bertolt Brecht created a captivating play about the rise of the Nazi party throughout Germany. 74 years later Wesley Enoch has transformed the Brechtian techniques and dramatic elements and has successfully recreated the play Mother Courage and her Children in an Australian setting while still conforming to the original social and political commentary of the play. In the modernised Mother Courage Enoch made crucial decisions in order to comply with the variety of techniques used by Brecht, he has incorporated music, narration, gestus, frequent change of character, the stage was minimal, as were the props and amount of characters. The play, like the majority of Brecht plays, has a strong moral, social and political meaning, which provokes a reaction amongst the audience; Enoch has reinforced this message throughout the play leaving the audience with a similar impact and the questioning of their own morality.

The Wesley Enoch version of Mother Courage and Her Children focuses on an aboriginal woman and her three children during a war over land and minerals. At the beginning of the play the advantages of the war are highlighted; Mother Courage is with her family and to her the war is a profitable event, which does not effect her as long as the ‘Bungoo’. In the beginning scenes, although Courage tries to hide it, it is evident that she has a strong relationship with her children; she is very protective, loving and attached to her three children. Throughout the play as the families desire for money increases their strength and independence decreases and her children’s vulnerability results in Mother Courage losing her children to the ongoing war, deep sympathy is felt throughout the audience and the anti-war message is translated strongly.

Enoch used strong forms of symbolism throughout the play in order to intensify the reaction of the audience, the most evident symbol being Mother Courage’s famous wagon. A focal point for the majority of scenes, the wagon was Mother Courage’s home, work, transportation and source of money, basically the wagon was everything to Mother Courage and her children but yet she was always willing to give everything up in order to save her family but unfortunately the cost of war included her children’s lives. In one section of the play Mother Courage uses a missile to support her washing line, this represents how adapted the people were to the long-lasting war, it became normal to use a deadly weapon to dry clothing and the characters began to forget what it was like before war broke out and Mother Courage did not want to remember. In the beginning of the play Mother Courage attempts to trick her children in order to restrain them from entering war, in the trick all three children chose a black cross, meaning if they were to enter the war they would die. Although not realised at first this is perhaps one of the strongest symbols throughout the play, it reveals to the audience how gullible people can be when entering a war, how the government and politicians desire for money is resulting in the death of anyone but themselves and that war will ultimately result in death. The death of all three children represents greed and the power of money, the outcome of war and the outcome of a world dominated by powerful people.

From the beginning of the opening scene the audience is guessing and anticipating what will happen next. With the use of sound effects, music and silence Enoch built tension throughout the play. When building tension the stage would be silent except for the characters and as the climactic point is reached a loud sound effect or outburst of music happens and as each child dies the audience feels intense tension. The climactic point of tension in the play is when Kattrin is banging a bat against a tin shield, not only does this reinforce the Australian setting it makes the audience uncomfortable, a common Brechtian technique, which leaves them questioning what they would do in that situation and the morality of their decisions compared to Kattrin.

A typical Brechtian play is very minimalistic; the stage is basic, little amount of props and with the frequent change of character, minimal performers. Enoch abided by these techniques by having an almost empty stage with the wings exposed to the audience, the main prop being the wagon and only few others and most performers played multiple roles. The reason for doing this is so the performance seems more realistic and feels as though it is really happening. Brecht intended to make his plays seem very realistic with the aim that people would realise that they are actual situations, which is why Enoch used narration, it breaks the fourth wall between the audience and everyone is incorporated.

Wesley Enoch has successfully used multiple Brechtian techniques and elements and created a strong message about the need for change both socially and politically. The message of the play will remain relevant while war is ongoing. In Mother Courage and Her Children director Wesley Enoch makes it impossible to avoid the message that you can not be involved in something and not make moral judgement, have no consequences and be morally a part and trying to profit from war will only cause devastation and loss and while politics still decide to engage in war.

...The thirty year war that was in mother courage and her children is the same situation in the Middle East today. The isreaeli-plestine, the shia-sunni dispute, Iran -Iraq war etc. which has its religious roots, the control of great resource and fighting for land. The Role of a Mother in a Doll's House and Mother Courage

...The redefinition of a woman's role in society and the image of the maternal figure through comparison of female characters in Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House and Bertold Brecht’s Mother Courage and her Children. Henrik Ibsen’s Nora Helmer and Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage present two strongly defined female heroines whose actions not only adversely affect the other characters’ lives but also suggest a fundamental problem with their societies. Both playwrights establish the macroscopic view of society’s turmoil in the microscopic, individual characters of Nora and Mother Courage. Both characters have an indomitable magnetism that, on the one hand, allows them to control others but, on the other, cause them to make desperate choices that reflect a repressive society. In analyzing the figures of Nora in A Doll House and Anna Fierling in Mother Courage and Her Children, it is important to examine the ways in which they interact with their respective societies, specifically how well they play the roles defined for them. For each play, there exist social structures, as well as exigencies of a given period within those structures, which range from being burdensome to downright inimical to the process of being a good mother. In the case of Nora, the perspective is bleak: due to the oppressively, male-dominated society , not only is she in no position to be a provider or protector for her children, but due to the condescending, patronizing attitudes of her father and...

The Seven Grandfather Teachings (Bravery)

...The Seven Grandfather Teachings- Courage (Bravery) Bravery * Bravery means to face the foe with integrity; to not hide from or avoid what lies in front of us. It is an understanding that not everything that is faced can be changed, but that nothing can be changed until it is faced. Bravery means that we may hear things about ourselves that we do not like and may have to acknowledge our own limitations, but to fail to do so limits our growth. It means that we may have to say things that may be critical of others, but that we do so with the goal of accomplishing a peaceful resolution, we must be brave enough to do so. Inuit Bear * In my poster, I chose to draw an Inuit bear necklace because the bear provides many lessons in the way it lives, it teaches bravery, strength, and courage. Though gentle by nature, the ferociousness of a mother Bear when one of her cubs is approached is the true definition of courage. To have the mental and moral strength to overcome fears that prevent us from living our true spirit as human beings is a great challenge that must be met with the same vigor and intensity as a mother Bear protecting her cub. Living of the heart and living of the spirit is difficult, but the Bear’s example shows us how to face any danger to achieve these goals.  Necklace and Arrow * The reason why the Inuit bear is on a necklace is because it represents all the warriors and saviors who have followed/worn the...

Beowulf

...from adolescence to adulthood to old age; he matures through heroism and courage. As Beowulf becomes older, you can see the maturity that grows inside of him through his acts of heroism. Grendel is the monster that went to Herot (mead hall) and slaughtered many of Hrothgar’s men while they were sleeping by smashing their bodies and devouring them for dinner. Beowulf, who is a follower of Higlac and is the strongest of the Geats, heard about Grendel and decided to take action himself, so he rounded up a few men and “ended the grief, sorrow, [and] suffering forced on Hrothgar’s helpless people” (Raffel, page 55). Beowulf showed heroism as he crossed the sea that led him to Herot to go save these people of Hrothgar, from this savage. He was portrayed as a hero in their eyes because he ended this tragedy with such strength and courage. As Beowulf pretended to sleep, Grendel “clutched at [him] with his claws, and was instantly seized himself, claws bent back as Beowulf leaned up on one arm” and Grendel was sure that he had never met a man so strong that his mind quickly filled with fear and terror (Raffel, page 52). Heroism is shown again when Beowulf seized Grendel himself because it proved how strong and determined he was to put all of the other people out of their misery. Even Grendel, the monster himself, admitted to having never met someone as strong and heroic as Beowulf. After Grendel’s death, his mother wanted revenge and so she went to Herot and killed one of...

Courage Is a Virtue

...Enoch Olutayo Dr Kristin Rajan Engl 1102-222 6th September 2013 Courage is a virtue As a kid, I watched a lot of cartoons. Some were memorable and had an impact on my life, while some were not. One of the most memorable was a cartoon called ‘Courage the Cowardly Dog’. You can probably see from the title that this cartoon was very interesting. It has had a big impact on my philosophy as I have learnt life facts from watching it. I believe that I wouldn’t be the same person that I am today if I never came across it. I think it’s safe to say that as a kid, I did not know and understand a lot of things. The world to me was in black and white. You were either the good guy or the bad guy and when I watched TV, I always liked the good guys. This was how I felt when watching ‘Courage the Cowardly Dog’ but all that started to change as I grew up. This cartoon was about a dog named Courage that was adopted by a woman named Muriel. She found him abandoned on a trash can hungry and needing a diaper change. Her and her husband, Eustace, were on their way home when she saw him and immediately fell in love with him. Courage loved Muriel for being nice and loving, almost like a mother to him, so he always took care of her. As you can probably see from the title of the show, Courage’s name is a contradiction of his actual personality. He got frightened by almost anything and was always suspicious of people and activities that happened around him. They lived in the middle of nowhere, which...

You still had the courage enough to head straight into something that frightened you, and I really believe that that type of bravery will take you places. I think bravery is not being afraid to be who you are and standing up for what you wish to believe. You should always be yourself no matter what individuals have to say. There are going to be people who don’t like you and will try to bring you down, but sticking up for yourself is being courageous. Always standing up for what YOU believe in...

Bravery In Ayn Rand's 'Brave'

..."Bravery is the capacity to perform properly even when scared half to death,” Omar N Bradley. This demonstrates that brave people do what is right, even though they are scared. Rikki Tikki had the courage to be about to fight against three snakes. Even though he knew that he could die from going against them. He was going to try his best to protect all his friends and creatures in the garden. The author hooked the readers by emphasizing the theme which is bravery. Rikki Tikki is a courageous character in this story. The text states “clenched on her tail and he went down with her and very few mongooses, however wise and old they may not, care to follow a cobra into its hole.” (Para 96) Since, Rikki Tikki knew that if he did not follow her into the hole that she could still come back to kill him. He had to find his courage so that he could save himself and all his friends. The text also states “he was doing a much more dangerous thing than fighting Nag, for Karait is so small and can turn so quickly that unless Rikki bit him close to the back of the head.” (Para 33) For instance, he knows that he can even get killed by fighting Kariat. Beowulf Is An Epic Hero

...Who is your hero? By today's standard, a modern hero would be a rock star or a fictional person on TV, but this was not always the case. Heroes have been recorded in literature since the beginning of written language. The first indication of an epic hero was found in the literary piece “Beowulf”. An epic hero is defined as a larger - than - life figure, who pits his courage, skill, and virtue against opposing, often evil forces. Beowulf is clearly the epic hero in “Beowulf” because he displays bravery and strength, as well as demonstrates that he is a smart Anglo-Saxon leader. Bravery

...Bravery Odysseus was a virtuous and heroic leader. He and many other characters showed many acts of bravery. The bravery that Odysseus possessed was extraordinary and could have changed the story line completely if he didn’t use it as often then the story may have developed different. Odysseus’ bravery was tested in many adventures that he endured throughout the novel. This will be proven in many ways throughout the essay. Some examples of people that also showed bravery are Penelope, the herders, Tele, the suitors and even Ody’s crew. But the basic point im throwing across is that if no one had shown the bravery that they didn’t the story line could have completely gone in to a different direction. Some of the smaller characters that showed bravery every once and a while were Penelope, the herders, the suitors, and Ody’s crew. But the played a big part in the development of the story using the character trait bravery. An example of this is when Ody’s crew helped Ody using this trait. One example of this is when they were trapped in the Cyclopes’s Cave and they helped Ody build a giant six-foot long spear made out of a tree and then they helped him thrust it into the Cyclopes’s eye while he was sleeping. This was an example of bravery because they did this because they didn’t want to be eaten by the Cyclopes so they attacked him and succeeded. Not only if they hadn’t have done this then the story may have developed differently...

Bravery

... | Baumgardner and Crothers (2009) describe the virtue of Courage as emotional strengths that involve exercise of will in the face of opposition, external or internal. Within this virtue there are several strengths that describe an individual. For me and the person I am writing about this strength is Bravery, which is described by not shrinking from threat, challenge, difficulty or pain. My paper is on an individual whom I’ve become very close with over the past year. She has had to endure quite a bit since I’ve come to know her. It all began with her divorce that led to her being a single mother raising four boys ranging from 15 to 7. She rebounded into what appeared a stable relationship only to be misled and betrayed. She has also had to cope with her youngest child being diagnosed with diabetes. Throughout it all, she has shown a brave face, never cracking always smiling, and always willing to help anyone that was down. Instead of running into a corner and hiding, she has stood strong piecing together her life and making a good example of a strong woman for her boys. She has also championed the cause of juvenile diabetes making whomever will listen well aware of this sometime hidden or misunderstood condition. Of course, most people would say this is to be expected from a woman/mother but there is something resilient about how she has refused to accept what’s been given to her. She instead continues to...
