I think that the story of the flying Africans and Jake’s story started as completely truth, but through the passing of the story through generations and with the addition of elements of myth became mostly a fictional story. Morrison uses the theme of flying, which can be considered a magic or fantasy aspect, and it is found throughout the novel. The motif of flying is considered as a way of escaping in the novel, and it is used both literally and figuratively. The story of Jake is about his literal flight to Africa and his figurative flight as an escape against slavery and also the discrimination of blacks that he was facing. Morrison shows how this desire for flight is seen in Milkman and his ancestors and how the actions of his family’s past has affected him today.
