In “The Falling Girl” by Dino Buzzati, the author illustrates the motif of the setting sun to depict Marta’s youth and glory and how it dissipates as she falls. When Marta begins to fall, she is full of high spirits, bright and happy as the sun upon her. Marta’s “simple clothing” is highlighted by the sun, “exalt[ing]” her and making her feel beautiful and powerful (2). In the golden hour she is grandiose. The sun is Marta’s spotlight, accentuating her and playing her off as a celestial being. She loves it, feeling ethereal, despite the facade. Her happiness is short-lived, however.
