Motivation, Stress and Communication
Create a brief job description for a position within the company you research that you would like to fill. The ideal position would be a criminal investigator within the U.S Department of the Treasury. This position is through the Internal Revenue (IRS) which is one entity of the Department of Treasury. The agency is under the immediate direction of the Commissioner of Internal Revenue. The IRS is responsible for collecting taxes and the interpretation and enforcement of the Internal Revenue Code (IRS.gov, 2012). It headquarters are located in the Washington, D.C. area, and does most of its computer programming in Maryland. It currently operates five service centers around the country. The IRS publishes tax forms which taxpayers are required to choose from and use for calculating and reporting their federal tax obligations. The IRS also publishes a number of forms for its own internal operations, such as Forms 3471 and 4228 which are used for filing income taxes (IRS.gov, 2012). In addition to collection of revenue, the IRS exposes tax cheaters, issues administrative rulings such as revenue rulings and private letter rulings. In addition the Service publishes the Internal Revenue Bulletin containing the various IRS pronouncements (IRS.gov, 2012). The controlling authority of regulations and revenue rulings allows taxpayers to rely on them. A private letter ruling is good for the taxpayer to whom it is issued, and gives some explanation of the Service's position on a particular tax issue. As is the case with all administrative pronouncements, taxpayers sometimes litigate the validity of the pronouncements, and courts sometimes determine a particular rule to be invalid where the agency has exceeded its grant of authority. The IRS also issues formal pronouncements called Revenue Procedures, which tell taxpayers how to correct prior tax errors.
Discuss ways that goal setting could be used to motivate your performance after you fill the position. Goal setting is very difficult aspect of achieving career success in the workplace in today’s society as well as in any endeavor. Goals generate passion towards great performance. It also helps employees manage themselves. Employees should set goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, doable, and timely. Goals represent expectations and if employees have higher expectations then they will have improved performance as long as employees achieve their goals. When setting goals, employees need motivation and purpose in their jobs and if employees set worthwhile goals, they will find life but work more specifically more fulfilling and exciting. When setting goals, one must be completely honest with his or her self. According to the textbook, goals are future outcomes and results that individuals and groups desire and strive to achieve (Hellriegel & John W. Slocum Jr, 2011). The textbook also talks about goal setting, which is the process of specifying desired outcomes toward which individuals, teams, departments, and organizations will strive and is intended to increase organizational efficiency and effectiveness (Hellriegel & John W. Slocum, 2011).
Analyze your own reactions to stressful situations and discuss the steps you could take to manage the stress associated with your new position. Managing stress for most people is learned. On other hand for others it may come natural. At some point in life everyone will experience stress. Managing stress is very essential to living a healthy life because stress can and will kill you. I tend to do a good job in managing stressful situations. Stressful issues do not cause me to crumble. However I realize that the coping mechanisms must be in place in order to function at a mastery level. In stressful situations there are various techniques that I utilize to manage stress. These techniques include exercising; moderate, frequent exercise allows me to release tension and maintain a sense of humor. This is done whenever I have a desire to engage in it or 3 to 5 days a week. Another technique would be reading. Reading is very essential to the fact that it pumps knowledge and soothes the brain. The textbook emphasizes steps to manage stress. Laughter lowers the blood pressure therefore it keeps you healthy. These steps include: planning ahead, good time management, getting plenty of exercise, a balanced diet, viewing the difficulties that you encounter as opportunities to learn from rather than being trampled over by them, recognizing and minimize the tendency to be a perfectionist, and balancing the work schedule and the personal life (Hellriegel & John W. Slocum, Jr. 2011).
Imagining yourself in the position you have described, discuss how you would address nonverbal and cultural barriers to communication.
Nonverbal communication, or the expression of messages through facial expressions, gestures and body language is essential to successful relationships in the workplace. Examples of this are types of communication including eye contact, posture and voice speed. Employees and managers should be aware of how they communicate in these nonverbal ways in the workplace (Nonverbal Communication with Workplace Interactions, n.d.). “About 65 to 75 percent of all communication is nonverbal in nature,” says Susanne Jones, associate professor of communication studies at the University of Minnesota (Nonverbal Communication with Workplace Interactions, n.d.). With clients, the key to good nonverbal communication is observing what the client needs and wants. Also, it is important to remember that in the U.S. politeness and friendliness are key behaviors in a business interaction. It is the businessperson’s job to pick up on nonverbal cues and facial expressions, or note when someone is increasing physical distance or using blocking gestures. Employers are satisfied when you can perceive what they want by their unsaid communication, such as posture, tone of voice, voice speed or body position. Cultural differences in a nonverbal behavior are common sources of misunderstanding and conflict in the workplace. For instance many westerners like to make eye contact, interpreting it as an indication of interest and honesty, and friendliness through relaxed body language. If these behaviors do not happen, it can be interpreted as shiftiness, coldness, or disinterest. In some cultures, averted eyes and non-demonstrable behaviors are sign of courtesy and respect. Being aware of these nuances will help you to reduce negative impressions intercultural communications in the workplace. Starting a new career at a company something can have it good and bad effects on you. It is good to set goals that will help motivate your success, and also learn steps on handle new job stress and overall life stress. It important to learn that not all stress is bad stress but to stay in good health and that no stress is worth you health. Learn how to have good communication nonverbal and how to be diverse with your new careers.
