Movie Critique Many details in a movie seem to go over the common viewers head when watching. It’s not until you learn the terminology that you start analyzing and judging films in a more knowledgeable way. This paper will discussing the movie “Big Daddy” in depth and judges it based on it content.
Mise en scène consists of the three major aspects of filmmaking that are also components of staging a play: the settings; the subject being filmed, usually actors or people as themselves; and the composition, the arrangement of the settings, lighting, and subjects (University of Phoenix, 2009). The mise en scène of “Big Daddy” consists of a clueless slacker who lives in New York named Sonny Koufax, played by Adam Sandler. Sonny, to try and lure his girlfriend to get back with him, adopts a boy named Julian played by Dylan and Cole Sprouse who he lives with at his house for a couple months. The lighting was great when transition from day to night. Film editing is take all the film sequences taken and blends them together. Film editing is the art, technique, and practice of assembling shots into a coherent whole Big Daddy’s film editing wasn’t te best but it still was decent work. The transitions sometimes were noticeable and the mood of the movie changed dramatically many times. The movie made me laugh at a man with no focus or ambition trying to raise a kid to impress someone, and then all of a sudden, the movie wanted me to feel sorry for him. You go from laughs to feeling sad many time during this film. It definitely makes you go on a roller coaster ride of emotions that doesn’t seem to fit quite well. The cinematography in Big Daddy was great. In Sonny’s apartment there are high ceilings. The director purposely chose that home with towering ceilings so he could get different shots of the scenes. You notice the camera coming down on many shots inside of Sonny’s

...Critique of Master and Commander Critique of Master and Commander * The “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” is an impressive action/adventure movie that takes place during the time of the Napoleonic War. Movie Critique

...Movie Critic Hum/150 6/6/2016 The film I chose to critique this week is the classic family comedy Home Alone (1990) directed by Chris Columbus. Leading actors in this film is eight year old Kevin McCallister played by Macaulay Culkin, along with Peter McCallister, the father, played by John Heard, Mrs. McCallister played by Catherine O’Hara, Marv, who is the first burglar, played by Daniel Stern, and Harry, the other burglar played by Joe Pesci. Other characters in this film are Buzz the brother, mean Uncle Frank, and creepy old man Marley. The title of the film hints to the audience that someone is home alone, but the viewer does not know what happens in the story until watching the film, which makes it more interesting. This film is about a large family who gets together for a Christmas trip to Paris, but the night before they leave there is a wind storm, which knocks out all of the power, which means their alarm clock does not go off, and they sleep in. This puts them in a mad rush to get to the airport, in turn leaving Kevin behind, and the rest continue on to a fun family adventure. One part of a filmmaker’s goal among others is to create the right mood through a believable mise-en-scene; different settings that took place in Home Alone were McCallister’s home, the airport, inside the airplane, church, a grocery store, the tree house, and Santa exhibit. The two filming locations used in this film were in Chicago, Illinois, and in Paris, France...

...INTRODUCTION The film Rain Man was released in 1988 and won the Best Picture academy award that same year. I chose the film because it represented a wonderful mix of story, filmmaking, acting and comedic timing. It is my assertion that acting was the most powerful element of this film and crucial for the emotional arc required from the lead actor Tom Cruise. STORYTELLING The story of Rain Man is presented in a way that keeps the viewer in the dark as the story develops; delivering surprises and plot twists along the way. Writers Barry Morrow and Ronald Bass provide an excellent framework for the actors to really shine in their portrayal of the two main characters: self centered, smooth street-smart Charlie Babbit and his institutionalized autistic savant older brother, Raymond Babbitt. We are introduced to Charlie at the start of the film and quickly understand that he is a successful import automobile broker and willing/able to do whatever is necessary to deliver his product- this even includes paying off EPA officials, if necessary. Charlie is unrelenting in his quest to accomplish his goal. When he finds out that his long estranged father has passed away, he is expecting to inherent a portion of his late father’s $3 million dollar estate; only to uncover that he has an autistic brother who has received all of the inheritance money from their late father, the irony is almost too much for Charlie. This is pure genius from a storytelling perspective as it helps to...

Movie Critique of Constantine

...Movie Critique of Constantine HUM/150 Movie Critique of Constantine Constantine is a horror movie that rest on supernatural concepts. The film is about a chain smoking psychic, John Constantine, who exorcises demons and has a disdain for life. He teams up with another psychic, Angela, who has lost her twin sister, Isabel, to suicide. Together they find out her motives of suicide tie into a large sinister plot to get Satan’s son to rule the earth. They decide to try and thwart these plans but end up getting mixed up in them, particularly Angela. Constantine makes an effort to save her, and temporarily succeeds, but faces an unlikely foe (the archangel Gabriel) and his plans are derailed. Finally, he attempts to sacrifice his life for Angela and the world and, because of this, is redeemed. This movie is chock full of scary and creepy looking demons and cold half demons (“half breeds”). It is a horror movie in every sense, but is also a supernatural film. The editing in this film was appropriate to the story that was being told. The types of editing techniques used were specific to the horror genre. There are a few examples that show what type of editing was used. Match cuts, eye-line match cut, and fast cutting are just a few editing techniques that were used in this film. They contribute to the overall feeling of the film. For example, eye-line match cut was used a few times which increase the suspense of the movie. Eye line match cut was used at the beginning...

Crash Movie Critique

...Khoa Nguyen SPC 2270 Movie Critique Crash After watching this movie for 2 times, I am still confusing why the movie director named this movie “Crash”. The true is there are some car crashes in the movie, but neither of them actually describes what this movie about. Instead, the movie is more about racialism and religious discrimination. In my opinion, “Clash” seems more understandable. But in overall, I guess what I want to say is "Crash" is a really good movie. However, it is not easy to sum up this movie, as there are many people with as much characters, and following is so many different stories that wind on and off of each other. There are cops Graham and Ria (Don Cheadle and Jennifer Esposito). There's the district attorney and his wife (Brendan Fraser and Sandra Bullock). There are criminals (Ludacris and Larenz Tate). There are some more cops (Matt Dillon and Ryan Phillippe). There's a TV director and his wife (Terrence Dashon Howard and Thandie Newton). And there's a locksmith and a shop owner (Michael Pena and Shaun Toub). And they've all got something to talk about them, something is not right in their characters. Don Cheadle and Esposito are partners, but Esposito gets offended when he calls her Mexican. He also has a drug-addict mother who seems to favor his crime brother over him. Then there's Fraser and Bullock, who were pointed the gun in their faces and robbed their car. Afterwards, she wants to replace all the lock in her house. But when she realizes the...

...Game Journal 6 The school of criticism that made the most sense to me was by far the biographical critique. In my opinion the vast majority of the other critiques read as though the author was simply trying to find examples for that particular type of critique where there was probably very little intentioned meaning behind it. Some of the meaning behind the game that was analyzed seemed as though it was forced. The biographical critique, however, analyzes the author’s intent behind the game using quotes from the author himself. This lends more authority to the critique and prevented it from feeling as though meaningless aspects of the game were being critiqued. In the biographical critique for Katamari Damacy the critic uses the author’s own words to describe how the author intended the game to affect his audience. This is information straight from the source and thus allows for the game to be looked at in a new light. The author intended the game’s peaceful, fun, game that is almost devoid of conflict to brighten the lives of everyone that played it and thus make the world better. The critic in a more thorough analysis could then have described whether the game is successful in doing that, and if so by how much. The biographical critique provided the author’s motivations behind making the game. This is a strong basis on which to critique the game. Analyze the author’s intent behind making the game along with how well the game imparts the author’s message. By doing this...

Models Not Critics

...be wrong but my opinion on “Young people need models not critics” still holds. I do however slightly understand when adults want us to know right from wrong, and know to do the right thing. My problem with this is after or in some occasions before they preach to us about being the best we can be, they demonstrate the total opposite. Being part of the younger generation I’m not sure if I’m speaking for myself when I say we don’t need a how to. What we need are people who understand us and who demonstrate the things that they speak upon, rather than pointing fingers and demonstrating the opposite of which they speak. Adults aren’t perfect but if they’re able to critique the actions of the younger generation, they should be able to perform those same things they advised us to do better. Maybe its even better to not critique us, and once we...

Movie Critique - Black Swan

...Movie Critique The focus of this critique is on the film Black Swan, directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, and Vincent Cassel. A movie about a young woman’s consuming desire for perfection as a ballerina in the role of a lifetime. Throughout this film the mise-en-scene was raw and grainy with diverse camera angles that gave an out of control feel that added to the instability within the scenes. As the film progresses the viewer becomes increasingly unsure of the reality that the Nina character is experiencing. The tight quarters of the sets, apart from the practice room, emphasized and helped to showcase the pressure at the studio and the controlling atmosphere at home. The editing in this film was linear and showed the gradual and increasing mental instability of Nina. At times it was difficult to know where in her mental decline she was at and what she was experiencing versus what was only in her mind. Had the film been edited in a nonlinear fashion it would have added a tremendous amount of confusion for the viewer and destroyed the continuity of her experiences and gradual mental deterioration. Sound is effectively used in scenes depicting the reality of particular events. The harsh sounds of the cutting and clipping of Nina’s fingernails sounded like the snapping of small bones. The sound of grinding the bottoms of the ballet slippers in the resin box, the scraping, scratching sound of the knife slicing the bottoms of the...

Critique of the Movie Matchstick Men

...Critique of the Movie Matchstick Men I recently read a review of Matchstick Men by Nicolas Bardot who said of the movie: “very touching but lacking a certain panache.” The Matchstick Men starring Nicolas Cage, Sam Rockwell, and Alison Lohman, is the story of Roy (Cage) who with his “numerous disorders” and his partner Frank (Rockwell) tries to pull off a con job. Unfortunately, Roy’s daughter Angela (Lohman) suddenly shows up and things don’t go exactly as planned. Although Roy’s “disorders” are not mentioned specifically, I can’t imagine they would make his job easy in the first place, but throw a long lost teenage daughter into the mix and I can not wait to see what happens next. Matchstick Men is an adaptation from an Eric Garcia novel and runs one hour and fifty six minutes. Bardot seems to vary on his opinion of this movie. He makes special note of John Mathieson’s photography declaring it as “superb,” as well as expressing delight in the soundtrack which was compiled by Hans Zimmer. Bardot seems to praise the movie for it’s depiction of anti-heroes, yet at the same time says that at times it becomes “slightly dull and uninteresting.” Despite his lack of glowing praise for the picture, Bardot expands upon the “expansive and spectacular” past pictures by Ridley Scott, the director. Having directed such films as Gladiator and Black Hawk Down among others, Bardot seems to think Scott has found a hidden talent in his new genre, comedy, declaring that his work on this...

Water Diviner Movie Critique

...Water Diviner Movie Critique Water Diviner was a very captivating movie. It was the directorial debut for Russell Crowe. Russell Crowe played an Australian farmer who travels to Turkey after the Battle of Gallipoli in search of his three missing sons. Other main actors/actresses in the film were Olga Kurylenko, Cem Yilmaz, Jai Courtney, and Yilmaz Erdogan. The movie was produced in the United States and release on April 24, 2015. The farmer, Joshua Connor, embarked on a journey to find his sons, however only found one alive while finding the others dead. The movie had a mixture of mystery and action, but was very slow and felt longer than it actually was. The good story plot of courage and bravery saved it from being too dull through the excess of unneeded chatter and boredom. I would give the movie a three star rating because it really hit home with me, but was not astounding. After watching the film, I believe that it would not have been worth it to go watch the movie in the box office. The movie felt more like a moral story than actual entertainment. It showed the everlasting love of a father and the losses that he had to go through during the war. Russell Crowe did an incredible job of forming the story of his character and the story of the lonely Turkish widow and her son. The characters in the film matched the descriptions and dialect of the people that they were to portray. Characters such as the Turkish commanders and the British commander showed...

Movie Critique / the Sixth Sense

...Film Critique / The Sixth Sense For my final project, I decided to critique and analyze various features of the movie, The Sixth Sense. I will use a structural approach to examine the film’s edifice and explain how the productions of scenes and shots tell the overall story (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011). I will demonstrate how the genre and the rating of the movie do not appropriately fit its criteria, and how the motion picture evaluation system failed by revealing horrific scenes to teens by assigning the PG-13 rating. In addition to that, I will illuminate inconsistent and unexplained actions with continuity glitches throughout the movie. Regardless of its mistakes, the film became a great success, because the plot of the movie allowed the audience to explore a different side of life after death and the grief that comes with it. Ultimately, the movie The Sixth Sense can be perceived as a therapy, because it gives us tools on how to deal with fear and helps us learn about the ways on how to come with terms of loss. It also explains the importance of communication between a doctor and the patient, a husband and a wife, a mother and a son, and of course, between our society and ourselves. Two unalike families contribute to the story’s plot. Two separate lives of Cole (played by Haley Joel Osment) and his mother Lynn (played by Toni Collette), and a psychologist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) with his wife Anna (played by Olivia Williams). The story begins with an ordinary psychologist...
