Movie Poster Comparing Analysis

Any reader who comes across the two posters gets an immediate sense that it is an advertisement (purpose) of western movies (genre). These posters are intended to promote to action packed movies: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and A Fistful of Dollars. This is clearly portrayed by the images of the cast whose dress code is western where cowboy hats and natural beards are evident. In addition the use of bold western font and the color selection, particularly of sunset-like orange and brown, makes it so western. More revealing, is the prominence of the guns. Clint Eastwood prominently occupies the central portion of the poster. In the poster on the left (Good, Bad, and Ugly), he is smack in the center. On the poster on the right he dominates at least two thirds of the poster. On the poster on the left, the reader will notice scenes of action casting heated gun battles and on the forefront are three men standing in confrontational postures. These features would quickly capture the interest of an audience that is interested in western movies (genre) that is also interested in real action, energy, or those with a fascination for violence (logos). This action and energy is suggested by the mean faces and guns (one each per poster). The two posters are engaging in that they equally draw the reader who is interested in action to look further into the background and see further portrayal of action.
Facial expressions and body language are very important as they send forth a strong message to the reader. For example, in casting the promotion for the movie A Fistful of Dollars, the media producers used what appears to be a telephoto lens on the close up shot to blur out the background and put more attention on the imposing facial expressions Clint Eastwood, the main character. In both posters, the movie director, Sergio Leone successfully portrays men who look long-weathered by work and the desert sun - and, perhaps anger and brutality. With their eyes gazed at a distance, it bring out the “shadowy” minds of the characters to bear upon the imaginations of the reader. Also, the orange, fiery lighting makes it look and feel sinister and as the shadows provides the impression of deceit and evilness.
Any Western film with Clint Eastwood is just Legendary. For the poster on the right, the reader is confronted by the mean looking facial image of Clint Eastwood, an accomplished movie actor (ethos), dressed in western attire consisting of the usual high-crowned, wide-brimmed, soft-felt western hat. In both posters, the movie director, Sergio Leone successfully portrays men who look long-weathered by work and the sun, perhaps anger and brutality, in the western deserts. With their eyes gazed at a distance, it bring out the “shadowy” minds of the characters to bear upon the imaginations of the reader images of tactful planning and focus on part of the cast.
In the background is the image of a desolate western town at sunset. The only visible life is that of three alert “cowboys,” namely: Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Greef, and Gian Maria Volonte. This, certainly is an image intended to grab the interest of the viewer who has a love for North American western movies (audience). On the poster promoting the movie The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, the three main characters of the film are represented as "the good" (Clint Eastwood), "the bad" (Lee Van Cleef), and "the ugly" (Eli Wallach) – (ethos). The most noticeable words which appear on the poster on the left is title of the movie The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and the renowned movie director Sergio Leone (ethos).
For the poster on the right prominence of the words A Fistful of Dollars is clearly the title of the movie. A vast empty Western landscape (again, this adds to the ethos). The titles of the two movies are short, catchy and crafted in a manner that would attract the target audience by using what might be considered as star-power and gangster strap lines, which would encourage the viewers to watch it. A close study of the two posters brings out imposing shots of the cast which offers the reader an opportunity leads to nowhere in terms of associating the message portrayed by the visuals to images.
For example, in The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly, the first question that comes to the reader’s mind is fact that the title is definitely associated to the three men. This association is portrayed by the simple placement of the movie title above the portraits of the three men. The question that now remains, is who is good, who is bad and who is ugly among the three men? As it regards the poster for A Fistful of Dollars, the caption is placed right under the imposing image of Clint Eastwood and thus the response is look for the hand that has the dollars. In this case there are no hands visible and that includes the hand that might be holding the ready to blaze gun.
In conclusion, the poster makers were successful in their efforts to promote the two western movies to the use of color, background, and demeanors of the cast. Both were equally engaging with enough content to captivate and hold the reader’s attention long enough to become interested. The movies featuring Clint Eastwood captures the attention of a viewer who naturally has an interest in action packed western movies. Honestly, the messages presented in both posters are certain not to allow a viewer to go into the movie theater with preconceived notions the two movies will not be packed with action. To me, I believe these posters were well done. If I were to serve as member of a panel of judges, I would give the creators of the posters a huge 10!

...of women among these movies has significantly changed over the years, in light of this I created three print based media projects in the sci-fi genre. What I discovered from my research into the sci-fi genre was that women played a very passive role and highly sexualized. This is why my first Movie poster ‘Launch Backward’ had a female in figure hugging tights, which would convey with the connotations of sci-fi women being strangely sexualized. Other factors that I implemented in my poster was the inclusion of a dark background with vibrant colours such as purple and blue, these tend to be associated among sci-fi. I changed the contrast from the bottom to the top of the main image to give the effect that the woman is from that aura. I also included a strange planet in the background of my poster this gives the impression that the movie would be based upon this, I feel that this would entice the audience to use their imagination as to what such a planet would be like. As simplicity was key to my poster I only included the title, actors and a gripping tagline to draw movie enthusiasts in. I believe I have achieved this mainly on the striking font that is displayed in this poster that has been reversed to allow the audience to decipher it. My second media production that I created was a DVD cover which was much more in-depth. What I included was a general plot outline that there was a disaster that changed everything creating a new equilibrium. I titled this DVD cover...

...project to class for peer review/reading workshop. 6/23: Genre Awareness Project Pencil Grade due at the beginning of class. This should be a clean, typed and stapled copy of your complete project. 7/29: Final Portfolio due. Of the first three major writing projects, you must revise at least one but you may choose up to two to revise for a new grade (i.e., the new grade will “erase” the previous pencil grade). Barring any late or other penalties, you have the chance to improve the grade on this project, if you choose to revise it for the portfolio. The Assignment and Rationale: For this project, you are required to find three legitimate, same-genre movie posters from the last decade and write a report revealing your genre awareness findings and conclusions about both the stability and flexibility of the movie genre represented in these three posters. You may choose the movie genre, and you may find that you’re working with a multi-hyphenated genre (e.g., thriller-crime-drama). This is fine, as long as you can find three movie posters that represent this particular genre. However, I advise you to not go too obscure in your choices, as this might limit or make difficult your selection, and I also request you stay away from choosing posters for movies already clearly linked (e.g., sequels, trilogies). Also, I encourage you to consider the country of origin for the movies and posters, as this will alter/change the content of the poster. For the sake of uniformity...

Genre Awareness Report

...out what characteristics define an action movie and whether or not they hold true for all action movies, I decided to do some research using the internet. After looking at multiple movie posters I noted the similar characteristics between them all. When confronted with the similarities I further analyzed the posters and tried to determine what the reasoning behind the similarities was. Finally, I deciphered the reason behind them and made a decision on whether or not certain characteristics are present in all action movies. Introduction Action movies have been around since movies were first created. The visual effects and the actors have changed, but the feel is the same. When describing an action movie the average person thinks of guns, cars, explosions, violence and big action-star names such as Jason Statham. These are stereotypes of the action movie genre. These same stereotypical aspects, among others, are showcased in the posters. My aim for this report is to look at different movie posters of the same genre and look for common themes and elements between them and decipher the meanings and purpose. Methodology To find examples of movie posters I began my research by using google to search for images of known action movies. The first search was for the Expendables 2 poster. When looking at the results I saw that one poster was more frequent than the others and had a movie release date. I then cross-checked that movie poster with trusted sites such as imdb.com or fandango...

This would have created enjoyment towards the audience as it would have created anticipation and he’s a well-known and popular actor, making him a unique selling point. This provides fans with a social belonging, due to the fact that the casts are with the fans and it’s like a community coming together, who are a big fan of Guardians of the Galaxy. Propaganda Agency In World War I

...In addition, Savile Lumley created the famous poster, “Daddy, what did YOU do in the great war?” in 1915, this was used as emotional blackmail for men who did not sign up for the war front, this was also used as a way for children to ‘shame’ elder men in the eye of the public. Even though a majority of the propaganda was handed to the British public in forms of posters, pamphlets, books, and speeches, there were also two movies produced the first being Britain Prepared released in December 1915, a film that used military footage to promote determination in the war effort. War For The Planet Of The Apes Analysis

...War for the Planet of the Apes directed by Matt Reeves is a difficult movie to evaluate. The trailer, poster, and even the title presented the idea of a full scale conflict between the apes and the humans that will determine the fate of nature, but this film only contains two action sequences. This advertisement created a misleading expectation that the film did not present at all; this makes the film difficult to review because after viewing the movie, I was conflicted on whether the movie was enjoyable or not. But after analyzing the film once more with toned down expectations, War for the Planet of the Apes delivers a story that will appeal to those that enjoyed the two previous films, Rise and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.     If movies...

Walmart's Corporate Plutocracy

...I was a little apprehensive about writing what seemed like a simple film review. Now, I realize the title only scratches the surface of the depth of the criminality that is portrayed rampantly throughout the movie. The movie I chose was Walmart: The high cost of low prices. I’ll admit I’m not a fan of Walmart, I rarely shop there but I know many small towns that have no other option but Walmart. Walmart is the poster child for “Corporate Plutocracy” (Rothenberg, pg. 555). The movie begins with the CEO of Walmart giving what seems like a motivational speech. He’s touting the contributions that Walmart has made to the economy and how solid the company is. His speech then takes a turn, he starts talking about how they have inspired fear and...

Any attempt to describe him will risk making the movie seem more conventional than it is, but let me try. It's a comedy, I guess. Or maybe a drama. Or a dream. The screenplay by Eric Roth has the complexity of modern fiction, not the formulas of modern movies. Its hero, played by Tom Hanks, is a thoroughly decent man with an IQ of 75, who manages between the 1950s and the 1980s to become involved in every major event in American history. And he survives them all with only honesty and niceness as his shields. And yet this is not a heartwarming story about a mentally retarded man. That cubbyhole is much too small and limiting for Forrest Gump. The movie is more of a meditation on our times...

Performance Critique

...Performance Critique The play I chose to see for this review was Marvel Universe Live. It was an action packed thrill ride of an experience and a great play. The entertainment company who created this act is Feld Entertainment they’ve had multiple other players like Disney on Ice, and the Barnum & Bailey Circus. This play includes a lot of Marvel identities that everyone is familiar with and some may not be like Black Widow, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Cyclops, Electro, The Falcon, Green Goblin, Hawkeye, The Hulk, Iron Man, Loki, Nick Fury, Red Skull, Rhino, Spider Man, Storm, Thor, & Wolverine and also many other characters in the Marvel universe .The plot of the play is about Thor shatters the cosmic cube and the pieces scatter across the world and the bad guys get a hold of these pieces and of course the good guys have to stop them. The actors in the performance you could hear them very well in the BJCC even when we sat at the tip top of the arena. The actors had great chemistry on the stage and you can tell they’ve been acting for a very long time. They villains moved like they were big and bad and the heroes moved like well no one can mess with them. The stage which they performed on was the court of the BJCC and the stage was awesome there was a lot of props. Like I said the stage was huge so there was a lot of room for character interaction and it all made sense for the performance. The set was pretty epic with the props the special effect the lighting and everything...
