Clinical psychologists often label their patients clinically disordered due to a certain criteria. Their patients are labeled if they are expressing behaviors of deviance, distress, and dysfunction. However, if someone is expressing behaviors of these three characteristics, it does not always mean that they are disordered. Deviance is described as actions or behaviors that violate the social norms. The social norms are rules of conduct that society has created. These norms vary from age as well as social class. If someone is deviant, it does not usually mean that they are disordered, unless they show distress and dysfunction. For example, in today’s society, there are people who are deviant from society. People such as hipsters try to stray away from the norms by wearing loose ‘boho’ type clothes as well as wearing their hair in dreadlocks. Society is not used to these types of behaviors, thus they label these different people as deviant. However, they are just normal people who want to stand out, it does not mean that they are disordered. In addition, distress is a self-focused emotional reaction that occurs in someone who is going through a variety of things. If someone is distressful, it does not mean that they are disordered. Someone who is distressed often has emotions of anxiety, worry, or discomfort. This can be clearly seen in high school seniors. With the pressure of college applications, scholarships, school-work, and prom, students often feel themselves going through this type of behavior. Often, they can overcome this distress by listening to music, exercise, or doing something relaxing. Though, sometimes others may relieve their distress with outlandish behaviors such as smoking, drinking, or drugs.
