Mr. Baseball Mr. Baseball is a movie about cultural differences between American and Japanese baseball, featuring Tom Selleck who plays Jack Elliot. Jack plays on New York Yankees and is number two to the star rookie. He is arrogant and has a bad attitude, and is not coachable. Jack is signed to play in Japan, with the hopes to strengthen his career and return to back to play in the major leagues. When he arrives in Japan, Jack is introduced to new language barriers, differences in cultures, and differences in how the team’s attitudes are towards the game. When arriving in Japan, Jack faces a language barrier, he speaks English, while his manager and team speaks Japanese. This makes it hard for him to communicate and is assigned an interpreter. Thus, his interpreter tries to make Jack look better by saying different things than what Jack says to make Jack look better and not offending the Japanese culture. While dating Hiroko, his manager’s daughter, even though she does speak English, there is still the language barrier there with the translating between the two languages. Jack learns some Japanese to try and overcome some of the language barrier and try to be understanding of those that do not speak English as well. American and Japanese culture is very different. Gestures that Americans would not find offensives are found to be offensive in Japan. The first time that Jack enters the locker, he did not take off his shoes. The team got very offensive because it is respectful to remove your shoes when entering room. In Japanese culture, the baseball field is seen as sacred. In America, players spit their chewing tobacco on the field and in Japan this is disrespectful and offensive. Japan custom of greeting people is to bow to each other.
