It must be really hard to adjust to a new single life, after sharing most of it with another person. It saddens me to inform you, however, that this wasn’t the case when it came to Mrs. Mallard. Not long after learning about your then assumed death, she started picturing a life alone. When she should have been grieving about your loss, on the contrary, she was starting to feel excited and free. When Chopin says, “…when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead”, it becomes very clear that you were a good spouse and loved your late wife.
