...In the Scarlet Letter the whole town towards the end of the book was starting to like Hester, due to all of the charitable work she has been doing for the community, but the reader is reminded that the religion/church says that she is bad and she will remain bad until her death. To help emphasis this Mr.Hawthorne stated “All the light and graceful foliage of her character had been withered up by this red-hot brand, and had long ago fallen away, leaving a bare and harsh outline”. This provokes the audiences Logos due to the fact that they know Hester is a good person, but the church will not let that be known or accepted, which leads to the public not accepting her openly. In The Crucible Mr.Miller used Logos by telling the audience that the whole witch problem was fake, but the church still decided to execute the people, due to a false belief. This was highly emphasize when it was said that “Andover have thrown out the court, they say, and will have no part of witchcraft...I fear there will be riot here[also](127)” The audience is faced with the truth of the trials, but the author made the judges stubborn against the facts; letting the audience know that the judges are wrong, which means the religion that the trial is based upon is also wrong, due to the execution of the respectable people in town.
