I believe military service should be mandatory for three basic reasons leadership skills, survival skills, and basic discipline for an individual. The leadership skills a person receives from the United States military allows for a person to have management skill when they leave the military. When a person enters the military they learn a variety of skills besides combat one being survival skills. Survival skills may not always be needed but with many natural disasters that occur survival skills can be difference between life and death. Survival skills also allow for a person to look at his or her surroundings to see what they can use to solve an issue in or out of the wilderness. These skills apply to many applications in a person’s life whether it be at work, home, or on a recreational trip. All these skills are what build up a person’s discipline. Discipline is what a person reflects onto another and their family. Instilling discipline in one’s self and children brings up a society that functions in unison with very few confrontations. These basic reasons are why having mandatory military service is essential to creating a generation that is able to improve on many of our past mistakes.
From a different point of view, making the military service mandatory doesn’t sit well with some people. In the United States there are rules set in place and rights that are given to the citizens. If the government makes this mandatory peoples future could be ended before it starts. For example if you plan to go to college and strive to be a doctor, lawyers, or even teacher it could influence a person from following that career path. Also everybody is not cut out to be in the military no matter how much training is giving. With all the different conditions out there, making a person join the military without a choice can not only damage that individual’s state of mind but can cause the families to separate. In today’s society giving the choice versus being told you are going to serve in the United States military will always be a debate to the world.
