...SUMMARY of COMPLAINT: Detective Deon Brown was assigned a strong arm robbery case taken by Officer Rodney Cavanaugh listing Mr. Louie Meraz as the suspect. Victim Mary Cruz, who is the suspect’s estranged wife, had contacted Detective Brown via telephone to follow-up and see if Mr. Meraz was ever arrested. Detective Brown called Mrs. Cruz back on 5-10-17 and recorded the conversation. Mrs. Cruz advised Brown that Mr. Meraz had actually used a knife in a threatening manner when she was robbed of her $200 in cash. Mrs. Cruz said that she gave the knife to Officer Cavanaugh when he investigated the crime. Mrs. Cruz also advised Brown that Mr. Meraz hangs out, and possibly sleeps at, E&R Liquor in Pomona. Detectives Brown and Daniel Watkins conducted follow-up at E&R Liquor located at 1643 N. Local authorities would send children to the school and they would board at Axelholme House. The defendants employed Mr and Mrs Grain to run the house and maintain discipline. The claimants stayed at Axelholme House between 1979 and 1982. During that time they were sexually abused by Mr Grain. They sued the defendants, claiming that the defendants were vicariously liable in respect of the torts committed by Mr Grain when he sexually abused the claimants. The Court of Appeal dismissed the claimants’ actions on the grounds that Mr Grain was not acting in the course of his employment by the defendants when he sexually abused the claimants. The House of Lords reversed the Court of Appeal’s decision, holding that because there was a “close and direct” connection between what Mr Grain was employed to do and Mr Grain’s sexual abuse of the claimants, the defendants were vicariously liable in respect of the torts committed by Mr Grain when he sexually abused the claimants. Comments It is not an understatement to say that this is the most important decision on vicarious liability ever handed down by the House of Lords. On April 20, the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico led to the largest accidental release of oil into marine waters in history. As a result, a huge loss of money and life was caused and affected serious environmental damage to wild animals and water pollution. BP was accused of their irresponsibility that it took 87 days before the well was closed and sealed. BP’s shares plummeted to the lowest point since 1996. The communities around the Gulf of Mexico blamed BP for their carelessness and appealed for more actions to recover their low income life. BP has already established $20 billion fund to respond the situation in the Gulf of Mexico. However, according to recent research, the amount of the money is not enough to straighten out the crisis. In order to examine the case, we performed PEST and SWOT analysis methods. We focused on evaluating economic and socio-cultural factors that were the major elements had affects on BP’s public image.
