The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG RMIT UNIVERSITY, MELBOURNE SCHOOL OF ACCOUNTING AND LAW SYMPOSIUM ON STATUTORY INTERPRETATION CHAPTER HOUSE, ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL 13 AUGUST 2009 STATUTORY INTERPRETATION: THE MEANING OF MEANING The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG THE MAIN TASK OF MODERN LAWYERS Although we still describe ours as a common law system (to distinguish it from the countries of the civil law tradition), the label is now looking somewhat dubious. The distinctive feature of contemporary Australian law derives from the overwhelming importance of the laws made by or under parliament. I refer to statutes, regulations, by-laws, executive instruments, rules of court and all the other ways in which the written law now manifests itself. In my youth, the statutory law of the State of New South Wales was collected in twelve manageable volumes, supplemented by a threevolume index1. These books included many important statutes commencing in the colonial period, some of which, like the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW), still apply today. In the case, a young man was in charge of a division. Mr. Korb was highly praised, and always stated to be the prominent source for the company. He went off to lunch as it had been a long day at a press conference, where he had to get a hold of the general population. Mr. Korb then proceeded to made comments that were of his personal views, which had gotten him in trouble with the company’s headquarters. Raytheon offered Korb to stay on the payroll, however, he was told to resign and relocate to another state where he can have a less influential position. He sued the company for wrongful termination and in violation of his right with the first amendment. Case Analysis Facts: Lawrence Korb worked as the Vice President of Raytheon Corporation, a major weapons company for military forces, who was in charge of their Washington Operations. ...ROSARIO, Gianna Lea V. Midterm paper- Film Analysis SALVADOR, Anna Christelle L. The characters, Bernie, Gayle and Bubber, had different perspective bias that their portrayed or showed in the movie. First, Bernie LaPlante, was not very traditional; he is more of a person who shows utilitarianism in his actions. When he found out that Bubber was acting as the person who helped the people in the plane crash, he did not ask him to tell everyone that it was him. He believed that it was the common good to let the people believe and still listen to the goodness of John Bubber. Second, Gayle Gayley, also portrayed consequentialism when someone was accusing Bubber of trying to steal from her while rescuing the people on the plane. She believed that even though Bubber tried to steal, his actions of saving her countered that. Lastly, John Bubber, showed the consequentialism in his actions, when he was showing unselfish acts of trying to reach out to the people. “The end justified the mean” shows that even though he lied acting as Mr. LaPlante, he was still showing acts of kindness showing his true intentions. For the autonomy of morality, the characters did not have to believe in God or the church to be able to show their morality. It was inherent in the characters for being considered as social beings. Mr. LaPlante used Morality as inner conviction, according to the five ways of looking at Morality, when he noticed that the kid needed his help. His inner peace of seeing...

...Performance analysis of Substitution Cipher Based Cryptographic Algorithm Mihir Sanghavi 11MCA48, Student, MCA Programme, Institute of Technology, Nirma University, Ahmadabad Email: 11MCA48@nirmauni.ac.in Abstract Cryptography is the study of Encryption techniques related to aspects of information security, such as confidentially or privacy, data integrity and entity authentication. Today’s world, for secure data transmission via Internet or any public network, there is no alternative to cryptography. The role of Cryptography is most important in the field of network security. The main goal of cryptography is Confidentiality, Integrity, Authentication, Non repudiation. Cryptography is widely used by governmental and intelligence agencies around the world to safe transmission of any format of messages online or offline. In cryptography, a substitution cipher is a method of encryption by which units of plaintext are replaced with cipher text, according to a regular system; the "units" may be single letters, pairs of letters, triplets of letters, mixtures of the above, and so forth. The receiver deciphers the text by performing an inverse substitution. Caesar cipher is an example of substitution cipher method. In this paper substitution cipher based cryptography algorithms are compared and performance is evaluated. Keywords Cryptography, substitution cipher, cryptanalysis, Caesar cipher, monoalphabetic cipher and Polyalphabetic cipher. Introduction A substitution...

...When the need arises to change that norm, it takes an opinion-changing event to effect the views of society. In early 1967, the Supreme Court ruled in a landmark decision clearing the way for interracial marriage (Loving v. Virginia, 1967). As ground breaking as that decision was, it did very little to diminish the opinions of people who were strongly against interracial marriage. In an era where the struggle for civil rights was an ongoing occurrence, not only did the law against interracial marriage need to be changed, but also the way society viewed it. In an effort to shed light on the underlying whispers of secret societal snubbing of mixed marriages, the movie Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (Columbia Pictures Corporation, 1967) was able to give our nation an opportunity to open a dialog. Today, we find a nation that is on the verge of repeating a similar course of action in the struggle for marriage equality. For the past few years, the fear, prejudice, and hostility against marriage equality for all, regardless of sexual orientation, have made its way into our national discussion. Several states have passed laws legalizing same-sex marriages and the Supreme Court will rule shortly on recent arguments for and against marriage equality, see United States v. Windsor (www.supremecourt.gov, n.d.). In this paper we will look at the movie Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, to...

...3434 11/23/15 V for Vendetta Analysis WR 111 C Analysis In the film, V for Vendetta, the director James McTeigue implies that ideas are bulletproof because the idea lives on through the people you've touched. The movie starts off with V saving a fearful women named Evey. She is scared of everything because her parents were killed and she watched her mother get beaten by government officials. V then goes on to explain his beliefs and ideas, and he even shows her his first act of rebellion by destroying the Old Bailey. They then run into each other a couple more times before the main events of V imprisoning Evey to help her lose her fears. She ends up wanting to die rather than give up any information for V's arrest. V does this to help her lose her fears and see what he had to go through partially. His main thing was for her to lose her fears so she would help him execute his main act of rebellion to free the society of their fear and for his ideas to live on. Once he gets all of London to follow his idea, he knows his idea will be bulletproof and it will live on through everyone he touched. V was a victim of a government ran epidemic. The government was experimenting on London natives trying to find a substance to make a super soldier who held a cure and use a illness to be a devastating chemical warfare weapon. V actually held the cure and he was the super soldier the government was trying to make. The whole laboratory went up in flames and burned down unfortunately...

...Erin Berkheimer Mrs. Wyllie English IV 21 February 2014 Research Outline I. Thesis: The changing settings in the novel Pride and Prejudice have various effects on the relationships between the characters, especially influencing their affection for one another, and this makes the novel eternally relatable, interesting, and important in understanding human nature and development. II. Body Paragraph #1: Relatability a. Quote #1: “From its immortal opening sentence, “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife,” Pride and Prejudice has enchanted readers around the world, in every language, for 200 years.” (Donahue 1) i. Commentary #1: proves my thesis by showing that a person’s situation is thought to affect their motives and wants, which is a very relatable topic even 200 years later ii. Commentary #2: helps in deeper understanding the novel by providing insight into a main theme/belief of the novel that we will see recur often in the novel, this insight is universal and widely relatable, especially in today’s culture b. Quote #2: “relationships, such as the one which eventually evolved between her character and Mr. Darcy, also sit well with contemporary women.” (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review 1) iii. Commentary #1: supports primary quote by giving foreshadowing example of developing relationship, gives support to idea that the themes in the novel are...

...Current Topic Presentation: The current topic presentation is modeled after a standard Continuing Professional Education session but is limited to approximately 10 minutes per presenter. Each scholar is required to prepare appropriate slides and/or handout materials to accompany his or her presentation. If you print handouts of slides, you may print 6 slides per page in pure black and white to save toner and paper. Collectively, the presentations are a “Tax Update”. Each year, professional accounting associations offer tax updates for their members. The update is usually prepared and presented by a fellow member of the association. When the year being summarized contains major tax legislation, the annual tax update is primarily a review of the new law. When a year passes without major legislation, tax updates draw material from other tax news (i.e. new regulations, rulings and/or cases). We will model our update after the second style; that is, no student will be asked to prepare an update of the tax legislation that just passed. Each student will be assigned a period of time to cover in the update. Each student’s task is to review tax news for that period of time and prepare a10 minute presentation on a topic or topics that the student found interesting in the tax news. We will split the tax news into periods of time by using Federal Taxes Weekly Alert Newsletters (available in RIA Checkpoint) as the basis for selecting topics. For example: Ganon may be assigned to base her...

...Colin Stein ENGL 3060 Mr. Daniel Larson April 18, 2014 Anarchy, Chaos, and Revolution in V for Vendetta Close Reading Panels: (Moore, 248) Throughout V for Vendetta, author Alan Moore emphasizes the significant line that V draws between anarchy and chaos, and the role that each concept plays in his revolution. Whereas V lives his life according to the precepts, or lack thereof, inherent to anarchism, he vehemently condemns the blind purposelessness, impropriety, and disorder of total chaos. Both concepts, however, are associated with V’s act of revolution; anarchy and chaos initiate the uprising, and it is up to Evey and the liberated citizenry of Great Britain to either stay the course with anarchy and rebuild their society or allow it to devolve into a state of chaos. A close reading analysis of the panels above reflect V’s beliefs regarding anarchy, chaos, and revolution, and their critical relationship to one another. This paper will argue that anarchy and chaos are bound to the concept of revolution, in that the society following a revolution faces structured anarchy or an unstructured chaos. Moore reinforces this theme in the panels through his symbolism and specific diction. Within these two panels, David Lloyd’s animation exhibits a number of symbolic images that reinforce Moore’s theme. One such example occurs in the first panel, on the image of V. In this scene, as the slain V’s words on revolution echo in Evey’s head, his body is symmetrically split into...

...Comparative analysis Comparative Analysis of two works E M. Tu English Literature 125 M V 05 August 2012 Comparative analysis Comparative Analysis of two works The creative process is often filled with emotions, and throughout it, it is not uncommon to experience the whole gauntlet of highs, lows and everything in between. The poems, “poetry” and “constantly risking absurdity” are two works that are filled with similarities in the creative process and yet they are very different. These two works give insight to the creative process from each poet’s perspective. They are both excited by it, but they achieve their goal through traveling different routes. As much as they like and appreciate the finished product you cannot help but believe that they are just as fascinated, captivated and even enthralled by the process itself. The creative process for them is a lot like certain aspects of life, and it is demonstrated in their work. Ferlinghetti’s experience is not one made up purely of joy, in fact; it is filled with struggle, but it is a journey in search of joy and of beauty. He must take risks and is willing to do so in pursuit of the desired goal every time he performs. He starts his poem in a manner using words that immediately catches your attention. You are immediately drawn in by his description of the risks that a poet must take each time he performs before an audience. There is always the possibility that he may end up looking like a fool (risking absurdity)...
