...7 March 2014 Case study: “Multi Projects” First Draft Evaluate the case and propose a solution. Prioritise the steps to be taken in your approach, be systematic and motivate your assertions. After examining the “Multi Projects Inc.” case, it is clear that the rapid expansion of this company has both the employees, and their clients chasing after very big results without the proper planning before the implementation to start, and going about their execution of the desired projects in the wrong way. During this evaluation, we will analyse the communication channels, determining why there is a problem between the employees communicating. We will determine how we will go about the best way to start the “Growin Project”, how to devise the correct project proposal, organizational structure, resource utilization, and compiling the most effective project team for the Growin Project, and still to accommodate current/existing projects. Multi Projects Inc. has a Matrix organizational structure, but is ineffective; the employees have formed their own communication channel, and completely ignoring the proper communication structure that is already in place. Completely cutting the ‘functional managers’ out, and discussing new projects with the ‘functional employees’ themselves, over ruling the authority of the higher communications. Multi Projects Inc. taking on projects in the range from $20 000 to $1 Million, and with a project duration ranging from 1 month, to 2 years, makes it...

...BAB111 Revised January 12, 2005 ILinc Case Study of a Start Up “It’s been a long semester,” thought Mark Bernstein. “I have spent a lot of time with Degerhan working on our business plan for our proposed new venture, Interactive Learning Corporation, but can we really make it go? Should we even try? I’ve got a good job waiting for me with a large corporation. Is the upside potential of ILinc great enough to justify taking the risk?” Mark Bernstein and Degerhan Usluel knew each other from MBA classes at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Outside a career fair sponsored by the school in the fall of 1993, Bernstein was sitting on a bench when Usluel approached and asked, “Do you really want to work for any of them?”, referring to the established companies at the career fair. “No, I can’t see myself working for corporate America. I’d really like to start my own business, but I’m not sure what to do,” Mark replied. “I know what you mean. I can’t see myself being a small part of a large corporation. I’ve been doing some work for Professor Jack Wilson that has made me wonder whether there might be something in our project that could be turned into a business,” explained Usluel. Thus began the prospecting. The Players Mark Bernstein Bernstein earned a BA in Economics from Union College. Articulate and hard driving, he had worked in sales and sales management for several computer related companies for over nine years before enrolling in Rensselaer’s MBA program...

...be an 11 store operation in no time and one of the southeast’s largest independent retailers, and is still owned and operated by Gary Houser (Houser Shoes, 2007). In 2000, Houser and his daughter Beth Houser created a shared vision for another chain of stores named GB Shoe Warehouse, which is also one of the southeast's largest shoe stores. Houser has a total of 150 people employees and embraces the strategy of making stakeholders feel special and realizes that its staff that is the backbone of its existence and people have faces and names not just numbers. Social Network Building the first step to building a social network is identifying those on whom the project depends for success (Gray & Larson, 2006). And that's why employees at all the Houser Shoes stores are friendly and welcoming. Houser has a managing project reward system that assigns the leadership team the responsibility of managing the reward system that encourages stakeholder’s performance and extra efforts (Gray & Larson, 2006). The retail fashion industry is con-steadily changing, Houser wants to maintain its reputation in providing all brand names at prices up to 75% off regular department store prices(Houser Shoes, 2007). Houser’s concept is to provide quality shoes to his customers during many years of expansion. Houser has a total of 16 retail stores is located throughout Tennessee, West Virginia and the Carolinas (Houser Shoes, 2007). Houser stores are facing...

...THEORY OF CONSTRAINTS PROJECT TIME MANAGEMENT IN MULTIPLE, CONCURRENT PROJECTS: INVESTIGATION OF ASSUMPTIONS REGRADING HUMAN BEHAVIOUR DURING PROJECT PLANNING J. C. Kago1 and P. J. Viljoen2 1 Masters in Project Management, Department of Engineering and Technology Management, University of Pretoria, Pretoria 002, South Africa. 2 Formerly Department of Engineering and Technology Management, University of Pretoria, Pretoria 002, South Africa. ABSTRACT CCPM has attempted to account for certain human behaviour patterns during project planning and execution which other time management techniques neglect. CCPM gives this human behaviour as a major influence on amount of contingency provided in activity duration estimates. The human behaviours however are assumptions and justification of CCPM relies heavily on these assumptions. The problem is that we do not know if the human behaviours assumed are an important influence on contingencies provided in activity duration estimates during project planning. The main objective of this research is therefore to determine, using empirical data how stakeholders in the construction industry rate the influence of human behaviour on contingency provided in activity duration estimates. Other factors that influence contingency provided have been identified and their relative importance investigated. 1.1 Introduction As competition increases, organisations survival will be determined by their ability to make...

They were college dropouts. The company almost went bankrupt in 1996 even though they had a strong brand, rapid growth, and high profit late in the 1980s. Jobs then went to work and transformed “Apple Computers” into “Apple Inc.” with innovative and technologically sophisticated non-PC products in the 2000’s. By 2010, the company also viewed itself as a “mobile device company.” Apple became the fourth-largest PC vendor in the US market. Through multi-million dollar campaigns, such as successful “Think Different” ads and catch slogans, Apple promoted itself as a hip alternative to other computer brands. It also highlighted its computers as the world’s “greenest lineup of notebooks.” The goal of Apple is to differentiate its products amid intense competition in the personal computer and mobile device industry. ...TITLE: INTEGRATION OF SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT IN PUBLIC HEALTH: A case study of USAID SCMS Project, Nigeria. NAME: Ogbolu', B, Emeka Supply Chain Operation Department, John Snow Inc. Abuja, Nigeria ORGANIZATION: USAID Supply chain management system project, Nigeria PROBLEM OR ISSUE TO BE ADDRESSED “The more integration, the better the performance of the supply chain” (Bagchi et al., 2005). SCM concept is defined as “integration of business processes” (Cooper et al., 1997). According to Lee (2000) the integration of supply chain does not only reduce costs, but it also worth full for the company, and all its shareholders. The ideal condition is that the whole process across the supply chain is designed, managed and unified as a unit. However, different peoples have different opinions, some are disagree with that integration and close cooperation with suppliers and customers is the best resolution in every case. Bask and Juga (2001) think that we have to to reevaluate the dominant vision of integrated supply chain management and propose that polarization of strategies in supply chains can lead to separation and give rise to semi-integration rather than full integration. For others intensive integration might not be in every area of SCM but it can be in some special areas such as quality management and performance measurement while in other areas it is valuable to have limited integration. Bagchi and Skjoett Larsen 2002 suggest a contingency approach to supply chain...

...A MULTI-STAKEHOLDER INDUSTRIAL PROJECTS SELECTION: AN ANALYTIC HIERARCHY PROCESS AND ZERO-ONE-GOAL PROGRAMMING APPROACH Salah R. Agha School of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Islamic University-Gaza, Gaza Strip, Phone: 970-599-746-533, aghasr@yahoo.com ABSTRACT This study uses Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Zero-One Goal Programming(ZOGP) to select the most favorable industrial projects from the viewpoints of three stakeholders, namely, govern mental, consultants and academics. Therefore, it is the purpose of this paper to help reach a consensus among the stakeholders for selecting certain projects using weights obtained by AHP as inputs to (ZOGP) model. This is first done by identifying the projects from each individual stakeholder's viewpoint. Further, an aggregate model that simultaneously combines the viewpoints of the three stakeholders is built assuming that the three stakeholders have equal weights. Results show that the aggregate model does strike a balance not only among the conflicting criteria, but more importantly, it strikes a balance among the different stakeholders. Therefore, the aggregate model would make it easier for stakeholders to reach a consensus. Keywords: Multi Criteria Optimization; Project Prioritization; Integrated AHP-ZOGP; Multi-stakeholder. 1. Introduction Traditional methods used in project selection usually justify the projects using low level capital budgeting which works well for investments with clearly...

Box 8888 Downtown Station, Montreal, Quebec, Canada H3C 3P8 Received 27 July 2011; received in revised form 29 November 2011; accepted 26 January 2012 Abstract Project portfolio management offices (PPMOs) are a subset of project management offices (PMOs) that handle collections of multiple single projects and programmes, i.e. portfolios. PPMOs are centralised organisational units that cater to the demands of various stakeholders by performing specialised tasks. They are initiated by their organisation's leadership in response to increasing management challenges originating from project portfolios. Although there has been considerable research on PMOs in general, not only a clear understanding of multi-project PMOs' activity patterns set in specific contexts like project portfolio management, but also both existence and mode of multi-project PMOs' contribution to successful performance are still lacking. By quantitatively analysing PPMOs in 278 portfolios...

...promising alternative source because it has many advantages such as abundance, pollution free and renewability. The solar photovoltaic (PV) power will play an important role in alleviating the energy crisis and reducing the environmental pollution and has a bright prospect of applications. Due to the nonlinear relationship between the current and the voltage of the photovoltaic cell, it can be observed that there is a unique maximum power point (MPP) at a particular environment, and this peak power point keeps changing with solar illumination and ambient temperature. In recent years, a large number of techniques have been proposed for maximum power point tracking (MPPT), such as the constant voltage tracking (CVT), the incremental conductance (INC) method, the perturb-and-observe (P&O or hill-climbing) method (Basso, 2008). Perturbation and Observation (P&O) method has a simple feedback structure and fewer measured parameters (Feng, 2010). It operates by periodically perturbing (i.e. incrementing or decreasing) the array terminal voltage and comparing...
