Multiple Sclerosis Devastates Lives

...Multiple Sclerosis Devastates Lives Dr. Miller states on page 293 in his book Coping with Chronic Illness “Multiple Sclerosis is the most predominant of the human demyelinating diseases.” Multiple Sclerosis is the demyelinating of the central nerve system of the brain and spinal cord. The demyelinating process is the destruction of the fatty material, myelin, which insulates nerves. The damage is caused by the immune system treating the myelin as a disease. The results of the attack of the immune system cause cognitive loss throughout the body. The history of Multiple Sclerosis begins with Jean Cruveilhier, professor of pathology at the University of Paris, who is credited for the first documentation and description of MS in 1830. In the 1880’s, Dr. Freud treated his nanny for Multiple Sclerosis and is credited for the first treatments of MS. Prior to the use of the MRI in 1981 diagnosis was difficult, the most common method used to test for Multiple Sclerosis was by dunking the patient in a hot tub of water to try and bring about the symptoms of MS. (Kalb, R. (1996). Multiple Sclerosis page 43) There are many theories as to the onset of Multiple Sclerosis. As stated by Ronald Schapira, M.D. in his book Symptom Management in Multiples Sclerosis page 11,” Until the cause of MS is determined, it is unlikely that a cure will be found”. Some believe that it is a viral infection. If it is a viral infection then why would only some people exposed to the virus contract...

Ethical Implications of Assisted Reproduction

...disastrous health implications and consequences associated with assisted reproduction, which more often than not are overlooked by physicians and those desperate for children. There are three main types of assisted reproduction namely – artificial insemination, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), and surrogacy. The ethical concern of these procedures is that they are unnatural method of conception, creating life in the laboratory, and fertilizing more embryos than would be needed, which often leads to massive abortion. Creating “man-made human beings” could be morally and religiously unethical. Doing things unnaturally such as assisted reproduction could have some devastating consequences. For instance, in vitro fertilization usually comes with multiple births which are often accompanied by infant mortality, low birth weights,...

Citizenship Obligation

...CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION WHO IS A CITIZEN? A citizen is a person who legally belongs to a country and has the rights and protection of that country. That includes the right to vote, work and live in the country and the right to return to the country, besides other rights. A citizen may also be subject to certain duties, such as a duty to uphold law and to serve in the military. A person may have multiple citizenships and a person who does not have citizenship of any state is said to be stateless. He is endowed with legal rights by, and duties to, the country of which one is a citizen. Citizens are the people who owe allegiance to a government and are entitled to be protected by this government. They are the nationals of a city, state and country. They can be inhabitants or in diaspora. Citizens are entitled to be protected, by the government in which they owe allegiance, in terms of security, safety and against molestation by any individual, group, organisation or country. Nationality is often used as a synonym for citizenship in English – notably in international law – although the term is sometimes understood as denoting a person's membership of a nation. In some countries, e.g. the United States, Israel, Philippines and the United Kingdom, "nationality" and "citizenship" have different meanings. Thus, a Nigeria citizen is someone who is allowed to vote in Nigeria state and federal elections, to serve in the Nigeria armed forces, to pass that citizenship on to their spouse and/or...

Marijuana: Medicine or Menace?

...Jacob Frederick 5-29-12 Buller Composition II Marijuana: Medicine or Menace? I have had strong feelings about this issue before it was even brought up as a topic for debate in our class. My opinion on the topic has not changed in the slightest, but I did learn a lot of interesting details concerning it. I have always felt that marijuana should be legalized, or at the very least, people with serious medical conditions should have access to it. And marijuana doesn’t even have to be legalized in my opinion, but it should definitely be decriminalized. I don’t think anyone who wants to smoke a plant that they grow themselves should have to suffer consequences, considering they are responsible in their recreational smoking. I do feel that if it were legalized, that there should be an acceptable age limit to buy and/or consume marijuana, comparable to that of alcohol. There are beneficial as well as harmful effects concerning marijuana, but that goes for a lot of things people do in everyday life. And I feel that a lot of time has been spent shining the spotlight on the harmful effects of marijuana, while little research has been done or even allowed, on the benefits of marijuana. While preparing for the debate, I encountered many sources on each end of the spectrum; including some in the middle. Many of the sources I looked at seemed rather credible, but others were most definitely biased. One example of a blatantly biased comment was, "Most pot smokers drink alcohol heavily...

Cause/Effect Ms

...Rogers Professor Benham ENC 1101 October 4,2011 Effect of Multiple Sclerosis Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune condition of the nervous system and the brain. This means that the body’s innate ability to attack potentially harmful foreign bodies backfires. When this happens, the immune cells that should target the pathogens attach normal and healthy cells instead. Multiple sclerosis is such a condition in which the nerve endings are damaged due to the loss or destruction of the myelin sheath, a protective covering. The sensitivity and effective transmitting capability of the nerves are then compromised. (All Health Online) There are five types of Multiple Sclerosis, however the severity and type of multiple sclerosis depends upon the size and location of the plaque. There are five common types of multiple sclerosis: 1) Benign Sensory multiple sclerosis, which is a form of multiple sclerosis is the less effective on the body, it usually doesn’t get worse and it usually accompanied with loss of sensation and vision problems.2) Benign exacerbating/remission Multiple Sclerosis, fluctuates but comes closely back to baseline after the attack. 3) Chronic Relapsing-Progressive Multiple Sclerosis is another type of MS where the patents’ have more server episodes. 4) Chronic Progressive Multiple Sclerosis is a more progressive condition where symptoms get worse without a distinct attack. 5) Acute Progressive Multiple Sclerosis involves a rapidly progressive downhill course, where...

...MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS Each question consists of a stem, which supplies the central question or problem. Each question contains responses, from which individuals must choose the correct response. Incorrect responses are called distracters, and the correct response is simply called the answer. Multiple-choice questions can appear in a variety of forms. The stem can be a complete direct question as in the following: Which of the following systems does the stomach belong? A. skeletal B. respiratory C. nervous D. digestive Or, the stem can be in the form of an incomplete statement, as follows: A neutered male horse is called a : A. gelding B. pinto C. palomino D. roan Individuals are asked to identify the best response from among those listed. Multiple-Choice Questions can be used to measure achievement in all six levels of the cognitive domain. Constructing Multiple-Choice Questions- The stem should be significant. The best stem for a multiple-choice question is one that would make a good completion question if you didn't supply responses to choose from. The stem should state the question or problem, sufficiently so that only the right choice is justified as the answer. ...This set of 28 questions, taken from prior examinations, covers topics in Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The purpose of sample multiple choice questions is to acquaint you with the style and substance of typical exam questions over this material. Please be aware that: 1. multiple choice format questions are only one of many resources available to prepare for testing events – reading textbook chapters and working through chapter examples, studying the end-of-chapter review problem and accompanying solution, and reviewing assigned homework items and the published solutions may be more powerful methods to increase your understanding of the topics covered in the course. 2. the exam questions used this quarter will be similar but different from these example questions – understanding the main concepts in each chapter is critical to success on the testing events; remembering a sample question may be of some help but the format of a question on the same topic often differs rendering memory a distant second choice to understanding. The Questions: 6. Scheney Company uses the weighted-average method in its process costing system. The company's work in process inventory on March 31 consisted of 20,000 units. Miller1, and George L. Wolford3 1 3 Psychology Department, University of California Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA; 2 Department of Psychology, Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY; Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH INTRODUCTION With the extreme dimensionality of functional neuroimaging data comes extreme risk for false positives. Across the 130,000 voxels in a typical fMRI volume the probability of a false positive is almost certain. Correction for multiple comparisons should be completed with these datasets, but is often ignored by investigators. To illustrate the magnitude of the problem we carried out a real experiment that demonstrates the danger of not correcting for chance properly. GLM RESULTS METHODS Subject. One mature Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) participated in the fMRI study. The salmon was approximately 18 inches long, weighed 3.8 lbs, and was not alive at the time of scanning. Task. The task administered to the salmon involved completing an open-ended mentalizing task. The salmon was shown a series of photographs depicting human individuals in social situations with a specified emotional valence. The salmon was asked to determine what emotion the individual in the photo must have been experiencing. Design. Stimuli were presented...

Management

...Santana Morrison Management Coming into Winston Salem State I was going to major in Accounting, until I took Principles of Financial Management my first semester here. I did really well in the class, but it came down to me having to pass the final exam in order to pass the class. The exams giving throughout the year were mainly short answer and a few multiple choice questions, but the final exam was all multiple choice. I made a B on the final, which was the highest grade I made out of all the exams. I didn’t like that and the fact that the professor told us that if we made a C in the course we shouldn’t go on to accounting two. I did let it discourage me and somewhat had an effect on changing my major, but I should have not let that change my mind. In another course we had quizzes every Thursday, I missed two quizzes (due to surgery and illness) and it brought me from a high C to a D. The professor always told me to email him even when I had questions for the final exam and asked if I could meet with him to go over the study guide. When I took the exam I couldn’t answer many questions because I felt like I didn’t have extra help and even tutors here on campus couldn’t help me, but that’s another issue. I feel that the curriculum for business maybe a little challenging at times. Also, professors should always encourage their students and help them when they need help, but not by email. I decided to pick up the Human Resource Concentration last spring and so far I like the HR...
