Title Racial inequality has existed in America since its birth. From the day African Americans were introduced to this country they have endured hardship after hardship. The African American equals rights movement is a big part of American history along the way we have seen prominent leaders arise in the fight for racial equality including Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Throughout this fight we see many people arise in trying to make this country a greater place. People like Jackie Robinson also helped make an impacted in achieving equality. Robinson didn’t use speeches and politic realms to do this but he used baseball, an American pastime, to bring together our country. The film 42 is a depiction of how one baseball player took strides to not only unite a team but an entire country. In the film Remember the Titans a group of high school boys both white and black are forced to come together to be the best team they can be. This film shows how overcoming adversity can be accomplished by anyone who believes in the cause enough. Over the past century African Americans have made great strides in overcoming racial adversity, and gaining most of the same freedoms of white Americans. These films both address and attract viewer support for the equality of African Americans. However, the film 42 does a better job at attracting viewer support because of the historical accuracy, the larger audience it appeals to and its’ stronger historical significance.

The film 42 is about Jackie Robison’s journey in the major league while fighting racial inequality using baseball. The film begins Robison’s baseball career with an offer from the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers to join their farm team the Montreal Royals. After a season with the Royal’s Jackie proves himself to the owner and he offers Robison a spot on the Dodgers roster. Being accepted to Brooklyn Dodges Jackie becomes the first African American in history to be on a professional baseball team. The rest of the film shows Jackie overcoming racism by ignoring the critics and playing baseball at an extraordinary level. The movie ends with Jackie gaining support of both African American and white fans around America bridging the races closer together.

The film Remember the Titans is about an African American school uniting with a white school during the 1970’s. The story is based on true events of African American and white athletes uniting to form one football team named the Titans. The athletes battle adversity with each other due to the deep roots of hatred that lies deep in the hearts of American culture. However, during the team’s summer training camp they manage to pull together and settle their differences to form a respectable team. After the team returns from their training camp the team battles their own town and school as they do not support the African Americans that have joined the team. However the team ignores the challenges that their town brings and has a remarkable season gaining the support of the town. The film 42 attracts more viewer support because of the historical accuracy of the film. Film viewers can often be thrown off by the inaccuracy and unbelievably of the films that they have seen. A reason that I feel the film 42 did a better job of attracting viewers is the amount of historical accuracy that the director included into the making of the film. 42 has been revered by film critics as very accurate. A film critic based in Arizona notes that “Mark Langill, who has served as the Dodgers’ historian for more than 20 years, viewed the movie in a screening for team employees and came away astounded at the accuracy and detail of the film” (Young, 1). Remember the Titans even though also based on a true story has been noted by film critics to contain high amounts of fiction to make a more exciting story for viewers. According to a film critic the script for Remember the Titans was “used on the fact that it is a true story, but much of the film’s content is fictional” (Tate, 1). Remember the Titians contains very little historical facts, it is merely a story of a football team that may or may not have been real. The South is full of stories and tales of how African Americans overcome racial inequality but hardly any of them have historical backing behind them. The film 42 is historical proven and more people can relate to the plotline than that of Remember the Titians. The film 42 attracts more viewer support because of the larger audience that the movie appeals to. Jackie Robinson’s success in the major leagues made big headlines allowing it to be known about globally. Robinson helped spread the news that America was taking great steps forward. Young children would all gather around to watch this incredible player make history. Robinson served as a role model to many young African American boys. He showed them that it is possible to overcome anything that stands in their way of following their dreams. Jackie once said, "a life is not important, except the impact it has on other lives." Robinson knew the kind of impact he would have on the future of American baseball and knew how important it was to show his fellow African Americans that they too could succeed. These young children that were lucky enough to watch Robinson make history are still able to relive his glory through this film. Even people that didn’t get to witness his glory days can still get a better understanding of how Robinson made history and what he did for America. In Remember the Titans a high school football team learns to put aside each others differences and come together. This film is less relatable to the general public because it takes place at a mere high school while Robinson made worldwide news. The film 42 attracts more viewer support because of the greater historical significance of the film. The film 42 was the story of the first African American to ever play in professional baseball. This historically had a greater impact then the story depicted in Remember the Titans. Jackie Robinson made history by becoming the first African American to play in a white dominated league in the 1950’s. As well as being the first African American to play baseball, Jackie Robison was well known for how well he played baseball. Awards that Robison received for playing base ball included Rookie of the Year, Most valuable player in 1949, and being inducted in the baseball hall of fame. Remember the Titans attracted less viewer support then 42 due to the less historical significance that the movie is about. Although the plot of remember the titans is very good and well constructed it is on a much smaller scale then the movie 42. Remember the Titans is about the merging of 3 high schools in Virginia, one of which was African American, to form one independent school T.C. Williams high school. Where as 42 is a story of how a man united a country be simply doing what he loved to do. While both of theses films portray a journey of overcoming adversity and fighting for equal rights 42 is the superior of the two. Jackie Robinson showed fellow African Americans that their dreams can come true and that overcoming the roadblocks of racial discrimination was possible. He made great headway for the civil rights movement and gave many African Americans hope. Robinson allowed for others to follow in his footsteps and make a difference in American society. The boys in Remember the Titans with stood ridicule and prejudice people with every move they made. When the white boys on the team finally accepted their new African American teammates for who they were and not for the color of their skin the team was finally allowed to move forward. By accepting their new African American teammates these white teenagers were able to show their fellow classmates that racial equality isn’t a bad thing after all. Both of these films do a superb job at displays true American history with relatable heartwarming stories. 42 however appeals to a much bigger audience and is more historical accurate and significant than Remember the Titians.

Harley Davidson

...Harley-Davidson maintains a large margin in its dominance in the U.S. Heavyweight Motorcycle market as compared to its major competitors. While the United States is HOG's most important market, the company sells motorcycles in many other markets worldwide. Harley-Davidson owns one of the strongest brands in the world, which helps it attract and retain a loyal customer base. The company established a strong brand image with its motorcycles achieving iconic status and being ranked among the world’s most valuable brands. Harley-Davidson’s motorcycles are known for their traditional styling, design simplicity, durability and quality which are why customers deem HD’s premium price to be “acceptable or reasonable”. The Harley-Davidson brand has significantly contributed to the success of the company by building strong market recognition and a loyal customer base. * Long Term Risk Overall Harley Davidson is a strong company with excellent margins and constantly growing revenues. The main concern for Harley is whether or not they can sustain their growth in the face of improvements in their competitors’ products and a maturing market. One major trend facing Harley Davidson is that average age of a Harley Davidson is getting higher, meaning the company is not as successful now as it has been in the past at attracting new and younger riders. This is also evidenced by the slightly weaker sales in less powerful entry level bikes. Many of HD’s competitors are more diversified...

...Internationalization at Harley-Davidson Founded in 1903, Harley-Davidson (Harley) is a U.S. motorcycle manufacturer that offers thirty-five models through a network of nearly 1,500 dealers. Its annual revenues are about $6 billion, mainly from sales of the big bikes that made the firm famous. Harley earns three-quarters of its total sales in the United States, where it also manufactures almost all its bikes to ensure quality control. The firm makes four distinctive groups of models: ■ Standard. Practical bikes used for low-cost commuting. ■ Performance. Sleek, sport-style racing bikes built for speed and easy handling. ■ Custom. Stylized bikes customized to customer tastes. ■ Touring. Long-distance, large-capacity, comfort bikes that typically include cruise control, stereos, and luggage racks. In the United States Harley competes primarily in the custom and touring segments, which account for around 85 percent of “heavyweight” sales. Its numerous competitors are all headquartered outside the United States and include Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, and Kawasaki in Japan, and BMW, Ducati, and Triumph in Europe. New competitors are emerging from China. Harley heavyweight bikes sell for $17,000 or more, which puts them beyond the reach of many buyers. The average age of a Harley buyer in the United States is nearly 50. One key to Harley’s success is the Harley Owners Group (HOG), a club of loyal Harley owners with over one million members, including 100,000 in Europe. HOG is...

Annie Proulx Essay

...Academic essay on Annie Proulx's "Job Story" Choices are something we all make. Not necessarily important choices, but there will always be a time to make them. It's not always good choices, but they have to be made. There will always be consequences, whether it's bad or good. Throughout the story, Leeland Lee has to make a lot of choices. Where to live, where to work and when to work. All the different choices he made, put him in the position he is now. Leeland Lee is an awkward-looking young boy. His face is heavily boned, which he has gotten from his mom, his neck is quite thick and he has red-gold hair. His eyes are as pouchy as a middle-aged alcoholic. His nose is broad and lays close to his face. Lori Bovee is Leeland Lee's wife. She has an undistinguished oval face, and hair of medium length. Leeland Lee is the protagonist of the story, because he is the main character. I would say Leeland is a flat and static character as he is an endless optimist. He doesn't give up when it comes to finding a new job, and despite his wife dying he still gets a job at Unique Eats. The reason he is a static character is because he doesn't change at all. After getting several different jobs he doesn't change anything, after his mom and wife dies he doesn't change one single thing except the fact he isn't listening to the radio anymore, but since that have been an important factor of the story all along, it can also show a lot about how he has changed. The story starts November...

Liking Is for Cowards, Go for What Hurts

...We all know love. We have all loved in some kind of way. We love our parents, significant others and even our friends. But we can also love other things like animals or material things. But what is the difference between loving and liking? And is it better not to love and feel pain or to love and be hurt in the progress? Jonathan Franzen seeks to answer these questions in his essay “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts”. The essay “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts” is, as mentioned, written by Jonathan Franzen and published in The New York Times, May 28, 2011. Jonathan Franzen is born in 1959, and he is an acclaimed American novelist and essayist. The essay is based on the commencement speech he delivered at Kenyon College in Ohio, USA. “Our technology has become extremely adept in creating products that correspond to our fantasy ideal of an erotic relationship, in which the beloved object asks for nothing and gives everything, instantly. (…)” As Franzen claims in his essay, many people can feel like they love their technological object. It gives them a satisfaction, which human interaction maybe wouldn’t. Franzen however thinks, that people in general don’t love material things: they like them. There is a major difference between loving and liking – even though it might appear small. “Liking, in general, is commercial culture’s substitute for loving.” Products are made to be likeable, but if that concept in transferred to a person, you would instantly see...

Reaction - Salvation

...Reaction – “Salvation” The nonfiction short essay “Salvation” written by Langston Hughes in 1940, presents a theme on the literal and often manipulated perception of children. Hughes narrates the essay as he recounts his disappointing attempt at salvation. Hughes aunt told him that when she was saved by Jesus she saw a light, and felt something happen within herself. As children will do, Hughes took her story literally and was heartbroken as he sat in front of the church and watched other children “saved” while he was not. He believed that Jesus must not want him because he did not see or feel anything. In the end, Hughes is forced to lie about accepting Jesus and in turn rejects the Christian faith all together. I related to Hughes story on many accounts. I am a mother of three young children who perceive everything in life literally, and as a young girl I was raised in a very religious environment. I could visualize and almost feel Hughes devastation as he sat at the front of the church crushed by the thoughts of God not wanting him. “Still I kept waiting to see Jesus” (Barnet, Cain, & Burto, 2011, pp. 351). One of the churches that my family attended for a short time during my childhood practiced speaking in tongs. I specifically remember feeling just like Hughes during a service when other children were speaking in unnatural languages perceived to be sent from God himself. I could not understand why I was not chosen to talk for God and intern was hurt and...

No Wonder They Call Me a Bitch

...Dog Food Fried, Flipped and Devoured Eating dog food may not be seen as the easiest thing to stomach because the smell, texture and by-products found within the mixture are thought of as awful and revolting. In Ann Hodgman’s “No Wonder They Call Me a Bitch”, although the title may suggest otherwise, different types of dog food are discussed. In this essay, Hodgman aims to inform her readers about the inequality in different types of dog food, as well as to entertain and amuse. Hodgman is writing to a broad audience, one of dog lovers and owners, as well as those that may be curious as to what is really in dog food, or more generally the packaging and processing of mass-produced food of any kind. Language, description and humor are techniques Hodgman skillfully uses to create a strong, convincing essay. Within this essay, Hodgman continually uses diction and syntax that a diverse audience can understand and relate to. In the beginning, the reader feels repulsed by what is written. However, through a light tone of voice and sentence structure, the levity of the experiences and feelings occurring throughout the experiment is conveyed. The personal anecdotes and thoughts make the tone feel less formal and much more story-like. In this way, Hodgman produces a piece that connects the information and readers Shortly after capturing interest through stating questions, Hodgman begins using large amounts of description. Each type of dog food is explained and illustrated so well that...
