Business Challenges

Nowadays more and more people owns more mobile phones than bank accounts and thanks to the new technologies there are many different ways to make payment (ie PayPal) over the credit card. The services offered by Telco company are easy and accessible via internet, making the customer feeling in control.
The worlds of banking and telecom are not so far away, they share some concepts and since the new technologies are enabling quick payments through the Mobile devices this overlaps with the more traditional debit/credit card services.
At the same time the services offered by the bank are evolving and the adoption of the new technology is little by little transforming the banking and the perception of customers.

The BigBank is particular attracted by the possibility to offer the existing services through new different channels increasing the customer satisfaction and loyalty and by the possibility to offer new services enabled by the new technologies (e.g. identity recognition systems are more and more integrated into the new smartphones and new systems based on face recognition and the fingerprint recognition available on the new cellphones generation).

...Business Development Planning What is Business Development The role of “Business Development” is a mix between a pure “sales” role and that of a Public Relations Officer and a Key Client Manager. Each organisation will set different objectives of its business development staff that may include some of the following tangible and non-tangible goals: Achieve product or service sales Prospect for new clients Initiate direct marketing campaigns Participate in relevant community activities Maintain and develop relationships with existing key clients Be active in business network groups Offer public speaking services Initiate sales calls including cold calling High level communication skills and good planning skills are essential in business development. Business Development Targets The business development function, like any other department, should have clear targets on what is meant to be achieved. A component of these targets may be a sales budget that outlines what the expectations are for the next year’s sales. The sales budget can be developed top down (last years results plus anticipated changes) or developed bottom up by the sales department (identifying this years opportunities). There are a number of ways to achieve increased sales targets: increase sales from existing customers find new customers for your product increase cross-selling ie existing customers take a wider range of products launch a new product (or product extension) to new and existing clients. Other targets...

Henry Tam Case Write Up

...Henry Tam entered the HBS Business Plan contest hoping to gain experience above and beyond the normal HBS curriculum. He teamed up with interactive music-based game start-up company, Music Games International (MGI). From the outside, Henry seemed to be part of a well designed and diverse team. However, the lack of team preparation has led to poor team processes and left MGI with no tangible business plan three weeks before the deadline. However, MGI’s team processes can still be improved through Henry’s integration efforts. The real crux of MGI’s poor ‘Team Process’ or, the “the interactions that group members undertake in a team environment that convert members skills, expertise, and other inputs into a group project or other form of output” (Polzer, HBS Case #9-403-094), was based on the following: a lack of common goals, lack of team roles, and lack of information exchange. Fundamental components such as the 'Available Resources', 'Incentives or Rewards', 'Roles and Responsibilities' were never reviewed during the Launch Meeting (Polzer, HBS Case #9-403-094). The MGI team’s failure to agree on common team goals and to define formal roles for its members upfront are the root causes for its poor team processes. Henry and Dana saw the business plan competition as an opportunity to gain business development experience with a start up and contribute to MGI’s vision; however, Sasha envisioned them as “interns”. When Sasha handed them an envelope of alumni names to cold-call...

...Hello ILC! In my 4th year of study, I would have to spend 8 months working on a project in a developing country. I could work on a health care delivery system, do an environmental assessment, create a marketing or small business development plan with local entrepreneurs, address key issues such as child labor or HIV/AIDS, and the list goes on. With a good mark in English, I hope to get accepted into this program. I’ve never taken an online course so I did not know exactly what to expect. I am finding it more difficult than the English course that I took in day school. I also find that it is twice as much work. However, in day school, a lot of the marking is through class discussions, presentation, and overall behavior in class. Because ILC is independent and there are no teachers to mark a student on presentations discussions, etc, it makes sense that there would be more work to cover. I like this course a lot more than my last English course. I love writing. In day school, we did a lot of writing, but there was always a lot of pressure to finish it at a certain date and perfectly. I absolutely love how I can work at my own pace think about what I am writing thoroughly without stress. It makes things much easier. I work at Zellers as a Fashion Sales Associate. And I have found that balancing school and work has become so much more easier by taking this...

Entrepreneurial Mindset

... Framing * Stocking an opportunity register * Focus * Promoting adaptive execution Entrepreneurial leadership: The most important job Although uncertainty might cause many to freeze, it can be used to your benefit. Uncertain situations are full of new opportunities. Your task is to continuously identify high-potential business opportunities and exploit these opportunities with speed and confidence. Thus, uncertainty can become your ally, not your enemy. Entrepreneurial leaders are distinguished from other managers by their personal practices. These fall into three categories: setting the work climate, orchestrating opportunity-seeking and moving particular ventures forward personally. * Climate setting practices create a pervasive sense of urgency for everyone to work on new business initiatives. Dedicate a disproportionate share of your own time, attention and discretionary resources to finding and supporting new business models. Gary Wendt, who drove massive growth at General Electric Financial Services, demonstrated this principle. He consistently, predictably made new business development his top priority agenda item - at every meeting and chance encounter. * Orchestrating opportunity seeking involves removing uncertainty from your people by clearly specifying what type of entrepreneurial opportunities are wanted. We call this 'ballparking.' A Swedish...

The Impacts of the Ongoing Global Recession

...market players said. Power sector and industrial units are the two major consumers of the locally produced cables followed by households. “We are facing a shortage of adequate buyers, particularly with power and industrial ones,” said Fardaws Alam, chief financial officer of Poly Cables, one of the fastest growing cable manufacturers in the country. “Our sales came down by around 60 percent in the January-April period of this year compared to the same period last year,” said Azizur Rahman, chairman of Aziz Cables. Rahman blamed this downtrend on the negative impacts of the global financial crisis. “We are still doing good in power cable sales because we have some supply contracts in our hands,” said Mohammad Enamullah, business development manager of Paradise Cables, one of the largest wire and cable makers in the country. Now the global and domestic gloomy economic situation is a cause for concern for us, he added. Bangladesh had to depend on imported cables until the late 1980s. But the situation has started changing rapidly since 1990s when a good number of companies entered the market, industry people said. Now around 50 companies are engaged in wire and cable manufacturing and meeting the rising domestic demand. Of those companies, BRB, Paradise and Eastern are the major players followed by Poly and Sun Shine. Local manufacturers import copper, which is the main raw material for making wire and cables. Price of copper on international markets plunged...
