He grew up in England in the 1950s and 1960s, being the son of a Pakistani immigrant and an English woman. He studied philosophy and began writing novels at an early age. Being the son of an immigrant, a majority of his novels unravel the difficulties and challenges a huge amount of immigrants face in their new country, especially the difficulties involved in finding a place to belong. Some of Kureishi’s most famous scripts and novels are among others My Beautiful Laundrette and The Buddha of Suburbia. The story: Parvez, the father of the teenage boy Ali, begins noticing changes in his son’s behavior and at first sees this as a good thing. He believes that his son is finally growing out of his teenage attitude and taking more responsibility. However, when Ali begins throwing out valuable belongings and his friends starts avoiding him; Parvez gets seriously worried, and feels as if his son is ungrateful and that he himself has done something wrong as a father. Finally he opens up to his colleagues who instantly believe that Ali has a drug problem and that he is selling his things to afford drugs, which later is revealed to be incorrect, seeing that he is giving his belongings away to charity. ...supported English superiority in colonized regions. This made relationships between English men and men from colonies extremely difficult, and often risky, to develop. In order to maintain unity and authority, British men identified with one another and supported the discrimination of colonized men. Exceptions to this social routine are evident with characters from Mangal Pandey: The Rising, A Passage to India, and My Beautiful Laundrette. In Mangal Pandey, Pandey and Officer Gordon develop a unique relationship that is often tested by the lack of respect for Indian customs by the British. A Passage to India shows the relationship between Dr. Aziz and Mr. Fielding, which demonstrates the complications of maintaining English identity without succumbing to the exploitation of Indians. A homosexual relationship between Omar and Johnny during the Thatcher Era in Britain is shown in My Beautiful Laundrette. Although the first two films are set in colonized India, they both draw parallels to the difficulties of having a biracial male relationship during post-colonial England. My Beautiful Laundrette also uses the most fascinating cinematic craft to portray male bonding by using unique camera angles and shots in combination with a relevant soundtrack. Based on historical events, Mangal Pandey encompasses a pivotal period for British presence in India. It is vital to understand the strategy of the British in order to analyze a relationship between a British officer and an Indian male. The...

...2011 Essay Assignment #1 Published in 1978, Maya Angelou’s poem “Phenomenal Woman” was written as an ode to womanhood. Comprised of four stanzas, the poem uses the effect of repetition to reinforce Angelou’s claim as a self-proclaimed “phenomenal woman.” As a phenomenal woman, Angelou states, “I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size,” (2). She goes on to use several quotes like such. “Phenomenal Woman” uses various literary effects to express to women that it isn’t genetic beauty which is important; rather, it is inner beauty and confidence which makes a woman beautiful and the poem’s repetition of the phrase “phenomenal woman” creates an effect in the poem which emphasizes what it means to be a woman. The first stanza in “Phenomenal Woman” begins with Angelou expressing the curiosity which “pretty women” (1) have with her “beauty.” Pretty women don’t see physical beauty in her, yet they see another type of beauty portrayed and question her as to what it may be. Angelou tells them, “It’s in the reach of my arms/the span of my hips/the stride of my step/the curl of my lip/I’m a woman/phenomenally/phenomenal woman” (6-12). Through the use of metaphorical phrases, the author is expressing to the women that she has confidence and it is displayed in how she expresses her femininity. For example, in the way she walks and talks. These things make her beautiful, or a phenomenal woman. In the second stanza of the poem, Angelou depicts herself walking into a room...

...window, which had a frame of black ebony wood. As she sewed she looked up at the snow and pricked her finger with her needle. Three drops of blood fell into the snow. The red on the white looked so beautiful that she thought to herself, "If only I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood in this frame." Soon afterward she had a little daughter who was as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as ebony wood, and therefore they called her Little Snow-White. And as soon as the child was born, the queen died. A year later the king took himself another wife. She was a beautiful woman, but she was proud and arrogant, and she could not stand it if anyone might surpass her in beauty. She had a magic mirror. Every morning she stood before it, looked at herself, and said: Mirror, mirror, on the wall, Who in this land is fairest of all? To this the mirror answered: You, my queen, are fairest of all. Then she was satisfied, for she knew that the mirror spoke the truth. Snow-White grew up and became ever more beautiful. When she was seven years old she was as beautiful as the light of day, even more beautiful than the queen herself. One day when the queen asked her mirror: Mirror, mirror, on the wall, Who in this land is fairest of all? It answered: You, my queen, are fair; it is true. But Snow-White is a thousand times fairer than you. The queen took fright and turned yellow and green with envy. From that hour on whenever she looked at Snow-White her...

...the Sonnet: My Mistress’ Eyes Are Nothing Like the Sun The poem “My Mistress’ Eyes Are Nothing Like the Sun” by William Shakespeare talks about how the speaker sees his mistress’ appearance. He describes this mistress using the traditionally used characteristics that make a woman beautiful. Instead of pointing out the best traits that makes his mistress physically beautiful, the speaker portrays his mistress in a more realistic way, with characteristics that are believable. The poet uses a specific style, a descriptive comparison method, to communicate his message. This sonnet rhymes ababcdcdefefgg, which shows that it is a typical English sonnet as described by Vale (2010, p.84). With this form, the speaker was able to describe his mistress in a seemingly negative way. He describes her as not as beautiful as the objects that a woman’s beauty is traditionally compared to, but as the opposite. With this form, simple diction and poetic syntax, the poet creates a serious mood in the poem which perfectly communicates his message. The poet uses a descriptive comparison style to communicate his message. He picked descriptions that usually are used to compare certain features of a woman’s beauty, and then contradicts them with this mistress’ features. He chooses specific features that, perhaps, he believes they best show a woman’s beauty. These are: the eyes, lips, breasts, hair, cheeks, breath and voice. This has begun right at the beginning, in the title of the poem, “My Mistress’...

...Women are beautiful By Maria Batrakova Group 21 D Free and beautiful, that was how one of the greatest innovators of photography, Garry Winogrand, pictured women. (Here you can see a photo of him: http://imgur.com/AjnXCe6) Due to Art Blart (Art Blart, 2011) he was considered as one of the most distinguished photographers of the twenties-century in America. Winogrand's amazing exhibition includes 85 spontaneous photographs taken between 1960 and 1975 in and around New-York city. (Series of his photographs provided with the following links: http://imgur.com/jNApIzk, http://imgur.com/fY51U1d, http://imgur.com/aTd0ImL, http://imgur.com/R1Jd7J7, http://imgur.com/K1cJdwO, http://imgur.com/MNQWicg) During the 60's the attitude to women totally changed. Inner and outer freedom were explicit, in some ways, sexually explicit. “Prince of the streets” depicted this social transformation better that someone else. Lola Garrido called famous photographer “the maestro of the moment”: “In short, Winogrand catches with his camera every detail by composing and giving natural meaning to the representation.” (Garrido, 2014). But the gifted photograther found the way in which beautiful creatures express their sexuality through their gestures, hairstyles, clothes and some other interesting features, he avoided naked pictures. Richard Woodward writes in his article the following: “Winogrand didn't dress these women in tight sweaters or pant suits, or apply their hair and make-up. Their clothing...

...are not aware that there is a huge difference between “Beautiful and Pretty”. Both words are used in our everyday lives, and most people are not clear about what their meanings are. In fact, by the time we call a person “pretty or beautiful”, we need to make sure how to use them and how to differentiate their meanings. I know some person may have different definitions of both words, but this is mine. Beauty is a quality that people, places, or things have that makes them very attractive, natural, spiritual, intellectual, and real to look at. For example, a woman who is beautiful, an attractive young lady, a stunning flower, and a mother cat taking care of her kittens are all examples of beauty. Conversely, something that is pretty is pleasant to look at or listen to, but it is not impressive. For example, a woman or child who is pretty has a nice, attractive face. That is to say, a person that is beautiful don´t has to be pretty. Being beautiful makes you a lot prettier, but being pretty never makes you more beautiful. This is because beauty comes from the inside, and prettiness from the outside. To demonstrate, a woman who wears makeup can make her look pretty, but it can’t make her look beautiful. All because beauty is inside of us. It is how we behave, and how we treat other people what makes us beautiful. It’s who we are. A person that is really beautiful has to have certain attributes. From my perspective, a beautiful person is gentle and kind. It’s helping and loving....

...In the poem “Singapore” by Mary Oliver, there is a very important lesson of social acceptance. The poet speaks of encountering a woman in an airport bathroom stall, cleaning an ashtray in the toilet, and the disgust that she first feels towards this woman and her job. The speaker does however, express that she moves past the judgment that she first feels towards the woman in the stall. She imagines parts of nature and wishes to put the woman in a beautiful place in life. In this poem, the poet uses imagery, connotation, metaphor and symbolism to describe what she is really seeing compared to what she is imagining and would like to see. Significantly, the speaker begins the poem by saying, “A darkness was ripped from my eyes” (line 2). The darkness that she is speaking of is the judgment that she places upon this woman in the stall. She first has a closed mind, a disturbed perception if you will, towards the cleaning lady. To say that it “was ripped from my eyes” (line 2) implies that she did attain a better perception of her. The speaker knew that she should not be so judgmental towards this woman and the job she is performing. It is obvious that she understands she should not feel this way when in the second stanza she states, “Disgust argued in my stomach” (line 6). For that feeling to argue, it exhibits her capability to understand. Bewilderment and dismay overcame the speaker. She feels disgusted by what most people consider such a degrading job, yet so displeased with herself...

...Borough Of Manhattan Community College Edgar Allan Poe: Recurring Theme By Eric Torres Professor J. Carlacio ENG 201 - 071 14 March 2014 Edgar Allan Poe: Recurring Theme Edgar Allan Poe was an inimitable poet in the world of literature. Due to intensely traumatic events that occurred in his personal life, his anxiety led to a strong emphasis on a recurring theme of death particularly a woman not only within his poems. Although the death of a woman was common amongst his work, Poe in fact held women in high regard. There were a number of women present in his life that nurtured and comforted him, but the few he chose to acknowledge and genuinely care for coincidentally would die which was a major part why Poe often went through severe episodes of depression. Poe’s depression led him to a dark emotional state and caused a constant playback of death within his mind. Mourning many years in his life his love for women and experience with death combined to form a curiosity for the unknown and he transitioned this madness into his work. Poe was deeply in love with his wife Virginia. They married each other in the year 1836. She had passed in result of what was then known as consumption to what is now known as Tuberculosis in the year 1847. Within the course of those eleven years Virginia’s presence in his life played an important role in shaping his literary work. From the first time they had met to even after her death, she inspired Poe indefinitely. In Annabel Lee Poe...
