My Best Friend Ian While most people think how they met their best friend is an amazing story, I believe mine trumps them all. I met Ian when I was about thirteen and he was fifteen, on the first day of school. Wanting to fit in, I was dressed in a way I thought was “cool”. I had a plaid button-up shirt, jeans, high tops, a very poor excuse of a Snapback, and some ten dollar white Oakley’s. By lunch I had made a few friends in all my classes; it was proving to be a pretty great day already. After getting my meal, there was a huge commotion coming from the back of the lunch room. It turns out it was someone’s birthday; gifts were being given and everyone was singing “Happy Birthday”. There were some usual party things being passed around, such as: party hats, cake, confetti poppers, etc., and some unusual things such as, little stick-on handle bar mustaches. By now everyone is having a jolly good time and I’m being only semi-awkward. Then this kid starts making everyone laugh, his personality was one in which you can’t help but like the guy. This was Ian, I remember him being a pretty tall guy, he had glasses, and the start of facial hair. He started gathering all of the left over party hats and attached them to his head. It started off with one on his forehead, another on the back of his head, and one on each of his ears. This continued until his whole head was covered in party hats! I remember thinking to myself, “Man this guy is crazy!” This was my introduction to Ian. Fast forward a few years and you’ll find the two of us playing horror games in his house. The games themselves range from Slenderman to Outlast to Silent Hill and many others. Horror games alone are enjoyable, but the reactions the both of us have are the really exciting parts! For example, we were playing Outlast, probably around one a.m. and became so scared that we made turkey noises! I believe the phrase, “Gobble, gobble, freakin’ gobble! That was intense!” was uttered. In the midst moments of pure terror, I threw the controller and pulled his bed off of the frame; maybe I was trying to use the bed as a way to protect myself from the game. Ian is the kind of guy who doesn’t have much shame. He has once gone into our workplace Kroger around closing and ran around like a little kid. His attire consisted of paid stickers from the register he plastered on his forehead, a green shirt from our church choir, and a Fourth of July balloon attached to his wrist. When he did this he was trying to make a coworker of ours laugh and help the time pass till the end of her shift. While you might find this strange at first, after you get to know him you begin to expect this kind of stuff.
This is Ian. He is the weirdest, craziest, most random guy that I know, but he is my best friend. He’s like a brother to me. While there are many stories that I have about Ian, I chose the few that I believe captures who he is. He is a friend to everyone, and can make anyone laugh. This guy is amazing, and he has always been there for me. If you’re lucky enough to meet him, I guarantee you won’t regret it.

...makes in life. The story revolves around the protagonist Ian Harter and is told by a third person limited narrator, as only Ian’s thoughts appear in the story. Ian is our eyes throughout the story and all feelings and descriptions are from his point of view, which forces the reader to have certain impressions of the other characters. The story begins in medias res with Ian opening the door to his house finding an old alcoholic man standing on his doorstep. Ian reluctantly lets the man, Michael Phelps, into his house where Ian is alone with his daughter, Corinne, while his wife, Karen, is “staying at her mother’s for a while” (p. 2, l. 31). After asking the stranger a few questions including offering him a glass of water, Ian talks him into calling a taxi. While waiting for the taxi to arrive, Ian sees his chance to question Michael and it is revealed that Michael was associated with the former owners of Ian’s house. Ian also learns rather tragic information about Michael’s past with his family, when Michael tells Ian about his family’s rejection. When the taxi driver finally arrives and sees who his passenger is, he refuses to drive Michael. Back inside the house, Ian offers to follow Michael to his flat and therefore calls his wife to make her watch their daughter while he is out. Ian takes Michael to his filthy flat and the evening is finally over, as he returns home to his wife and daughter. The two characters, Ian and Michael, are both dealing with issues of their own,...

...what else he has done in his life. While I was searching information about Ian, the resources I had written already really helped me a lot. The basic information about his childhood and teenage I got it from the first source and the others one varied a lot. I really liked when I was looking for the information because while I was doing the flashcards I learned things I didn’t knew before about Ian. Some things that made me do this essay and all this stuff about Ian was that I like a lot how he act. In the “The Vampire Diaries2” series he looks like so bad and his personality is mean. In real life he is like an angel so I think he acts super good, and also while acting a personality that is totally different as his own. I’m impressed of how he has like a complete career; he started since little and then doing more and getting more successful each time until getting to the top. ...and tomorrow. Who am I? I am Ian Daniel E. Villacarlos, a student, person, son, brother, and a faithful disciple of God. I am currently a student that lives in Caloocan. There are way too many ways to tell who I am but that would cut the thrill of being with me. These are some descriptions you can say to me as you observe. I am a simple, lazy, not-that-big person, naughty mischievous, moody, glutton, somehow sensitive type of person. I also like doing things that are not allowed, the more it is prohibited the more I try to do it. It is not bad to be daring maybe that’s why rules are made. In order for those persons who have guts to show what they have. Some of my likes would be: basketball, sports, excitement, foods, challenges, money, movies, games, sleep, color gray and black, branded clothes, and lots of stuff. My dislikes would be: defeat, boredom, complicated things, and so many more. I try to live my life in the simplest way as possible because I think excess things would only make things complicated. I live my life happily because I have my friends who are always there to cheer me up and also my family who supports me in what I do. It is fun to live with challenges that would test your capacities and would tell your boundaries but It is still upon you if you will let it overcome you and set the limits. It would be lame because limits is a foul word to me. I don’t know if this helped but I guess this is the best way I know to introduce myself...

Freudian Defense Mechanism's

...could recognize how almost every single one of the mechanisms has been present in my life at some time, but a few were more predominate than others. The four that really stood out to me during your lecture were compartmentalization, displacement, emotional isolation, and undoing. In my life all four of these have been used by my ego in a way to try and reduce stress or tension that was or is occurring. I was born and raised in a strong Christian family. We prayed before all our meals and went to church every Sunday morning. As I grew older I also started to attend church on Wednesday and Sunday nights for youth group and small groups. I was taught numerous things such as not to drink, do drugs, have premarital sex, gossip, cheat, use curse words, or lie. Since I attended a private Christian school the majority of my childhood everyone around me had the same morals and beliefs so it was not hard to believe that this was the way I should live my life. Once I hit seventh grade the private school I was attending stopped offering classes to adolescents my age forcing me to attend public school, this is where everything changed. I began to date boys and say phrases like “ Oh my god” instead of “ Oh my gosh.” Public school was a completely different world that I didn’t even know existed until then, but middle school was just the beginning of my complete life change. Once I reached high school I got into my first committed relationship that I stayed in for three years so I am sure you...

Sorry for Disturbing You

...her etc.) * Spelling * Paragraph structure * Introduction + thesis statement Text: “Sorry for Disturbing You”, a short story by Richard Knight, 2008 Sorry for Disturbing You is a short story written by Richard Knight and its main theme is regretting some of the choices made in life. Two guys are regretting things in this story – an old man called Michael and Ian, who is also the main character. Michael is an old sick man one night knocking at Ian’s door asking for a phone to call for a cap. Ian doesn’t feel like letting him in, but he follows his instinct and finally lets him in to help him. Ian following his instinct turned out to be a good thing, because letting Michael made Ian change The story is told by a third person limited narrator, as it is only Ian’s thought that appears in the text. So reading this story Ian is our eyes and ears. Every description is given to us by his point of view, which means that the impression of the characters that we get is affected by what Ian’s thoughts of these people. The fact that the narrator is a limited narrator, also has the effect that Ian can only be described by his thoughts and the few dialogues that he has. The story is told in present tense and its progress is chronological. The language consists of a few comparisons as like a newborn child. The story is a short story which is also confirmed when reading it as it has a lot of the novel genre’s characteristics – there’s only four important persons in the story...

In Praise of Margins Essay

...Jhocelyn Diaz Serna English 4 10 October 2011 Essay #1 According to Ian Frazier’s “In Praise of Margins” and Nicholas Carr’s “The Shallows”, margins are portrayed as ways in a person’s life that create space free of judgment through nature. The world can be a judgmental place, but margins in nature let people meditate and act the way they uniquely act behind closed doors in seclusion. As time changes, marginal activities, places, and thoughts change as the environment and thought process ages. Regardless of the change, margins never leave a person's life, no matter how big or small. Although some marginal activities are shunned by the world because they are not of the usual norm, nature does not judge and accepts the awkward aspects of a person. Margins through nature are necessary to let people be themselves and for their ideas and acts to develop, nurture, and grow free of judgment. In “In Praise of Margins”, Frazier writes of margins in nature as his childhood escape where he and his friends could go to get away from the world. Although he did not clearly have purpose for this escape, he realized, later on as an adult, that the experience gained from nothing was valuable. For instance, he and his friends would go “explore” the woods all day, a time during which, they would be in privacy. They were in a marginal place free of people who would criticize their acts. Growing up without people telling them what to do during their private time was important in letting them...

Perks of Being a Wallflower Movie Versus Book

...Courtney Vargas C. Abbott English 102 May 2, 2013 The Perks of Being a Wallflower: Which is better, the movie or book? Being nominated for awards from groups such as Toronto International Film Festival, Writers Guild of America for Best Adapted Screen Play, and Detroit Film Critics Society for Breakthrough Artist, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor, and winning Independent Spirit Awards for Best First Film and Boston Society of Film Critics for Best Supporting Actor, it is no wonder that The Perks of Being a Wallflower is described as a “heartfelt and sincere adaptation that is bolstered by strong lead performances” (Rotten Tomatoes, 2012). Just as far as the movie goes, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a story to remember. Stephen Chbosky is not only the author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower book, but is also the director of the movie. Taking place in the early 1990s, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a story of a teenager who is starting high school and his experiences through his freshman year. Charlie, the protagonist, is a loner entering high school and shortly after entering his school he essentially gets adopted into a group of smart, outcast seniors. His two best friends in the group Sam and Patrick, “seniors, stepsiblings, and self-defined misfit toys” (Chaney, 2012), give Charlie the time of his life his freshman year meeting new people through parties, football games, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and trying new things that most high school students...
