In today’s world, you feel frustrated with your family because they beat you at Monopoly or made you do the dishes when it was their turn. Tables have obviously turned tremendously with time, back a few hundred years ago, families got frustrated with each other because of who they supported in a war. We see a great example of this in the book My Brother Sam is Dead, written by James and Christopher Collier. Keep in mind, this book was written during the Vietnam war. The book details the story of the Meeker family during the American revolution. The family, for the most part, upholds the crown. Yet, the eldest son, Sam, upholds the patriot cause. This creates a “tug-of-war”, and the youngest son Tim is being pulled on by his Tory father and his Patriot brother. The authors’ use many creative tools to slip in how they feel about war. Some would slip through an untrained, or unobservant eye, and others can smack you right in the face. I think that the biggest tool that the Colliers’ use is …show more content…
Hypothetically, we could say that maybe the Collier brothers had people in their families. There could be a “Sam” telling them to support the war, and there could be a “Father” telling them to go against it. In fact, we could apply this to an even larger scale. Maybe Sam represents the U.S. government, trying to do the right thing, and the anti-war movement is Father, attempting to stop the madness. It’s hard, maybe even impossible, to not let a little of your life seep into your writings. Using all of the points above, such as the tug-of-war, and the hardships that can translate to both the authors’ and the Meeker family’s life, I have drawn to a conclusion. The Collier brothers may feel that war is a necessary evil, even though, they feel like a “Tim” in their own world. Now, has the definition of war changed as we moved through time from the 70s to now? Or does the definition still reign

Interpretations of Shakespeare’s classic tale of revenge have turned up in some surprising places: children’s television programs and films, a popular television series about a corrupt motorcycle gang and other well-known shows, motion pictures, and best-selling contemporary novels. Perhaps one of the most interesting Hamlet interpretations is a film for children called Green Eggs and Hamlet. The live-action film, released in 1995 and written by Mike O’Neil, retells the tragic tale in classic Dr. Seuss rhyme. The film follows Prince Hamlet as he seeks to avenge his father’s murder, while his servant, Sam Iamlet, encourages him to sample a new food dish. The Disney classic, The Lion King, is also fully based on Hamlet. He works in other strata of mental life and has little to do with the subdued emotional impulses which, inhibited in their aims and dependent on a host of concurrent factors, usually furnish the material for the study of aesthetics.
