... I took the tents to my mom, and that got our crazy camping trip started in the woods. I would always be the one to get the wood and the tents ready for my family because it was easy for me. If anyone got hurt I would get the first aid kit and fix them up the best that I could. My dad would always tell me that I was great with survival skills when we went camping. We went camping every year if it was pretty outside and it usually was. When my family and I go on a camping trip one of us always gets hurt somehow. There is always a cut or scratch on someone by the end of the trip. Cuts and scratches can be infected very easily if you aren't careful. We always bring a first aid kit with us now because one time my brother got a nasty cut and it got really infected. The kits should always have alcohol pads, bandages, and ointments. Those are some of the major items you need to have to stop or cover an infection. The...

...old I went camping for my first time with my mother and little sister. We never camp before. The scale of excitement and joy was higher for me and my sister. My grandmother told us she read books that describe camping experience, and what to look forward to. We could not wait to go camping to see everything nature had to afford. Camping sounded every nice to hear, and we were going to live out doors. We were going to the camping site at Paul M. Dimmick. I didn’t know how much food and drinks we needed to survive out in the woods, until I seen in the back of the truck. There were a little iceboxes filled with food, mini camping stove, lantern, gallon of water, tent, sleeping bag, bug spray, and booties to protect your feet’s. I feel like we were going on an adventure. There was a lot of stuff for our five days trip, I thought. The day was bright and beautiful. The truck tank was full and off we went. We had a lot of miles to go, we made two fast food stops, and three bathroom stops. My mother didn’t believe us when we told her we were starving, and I told her “If I didn’t eat I was going to die”. Soon after I ate that delicious burger, we had to make an emergency stop on the side of the road. I became sick and vomit everywhere. I shouldn’t have told my mother I was going to die from starving. “Are we there yet?” I ask my mother. No, but we got to the camping site afternoon. The action was just about to take place. We lay down sheets before setting the tents up for my little sister...

...It was July 1, 2011 and my parents told me that we were going to Sequoia National Park on a camping trip the next day. I was very excited! I had never been on a camping trip before. I had only seen people camping on tv. I also heard stories of people going camping. As I went to bed, I starting thinking about the pros and cons of going camping. One of the pros was that camping is very fun and I could spend more time my family. One of the cons was that there would be a lot of insects in the wild, which could bite me. My biggest fear is of spiders, especially tarantulas. If I get bitten by a tarantula, I could go to the ambulance. Moreover, the inside of the park is inaccessible for ambulances and is away from hospitals On the next day, I woke...

...Rachael Himes Final essay questions AUIP North Queensland 1. What was your best experience on the AUIP Queensland trip? Why? My favorite experience during the AUIP Queensland trip was snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef. I have been fascinated by the ocean ever since my first trip to Myrtle Beach in 2002. I have always been interested in marine biology but have never taken an opportunity to take a course and really learn about it. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem and all the organisms and surrounding ecosystems it interacts with. Learning about the GBR ecosystem before snorkeling made the experience more interesting and rewarding. Having two guides also made the experience better because they knew more about the ecosystem and were experienced in that area. Snorkeling was by far the best way to end the trip and I was very happy that our itinerary saved the best for last. 2. What was your worst experience on the AUIP Queensland trip. Why? My least favorite experience on the AUIP Queensland trip was camping in the outback at Tyrconnell. This was my least enjoyable stay of the trip because I personally do not like camping. I have always thought of camping to be quite boring. I also found it hard to concentrate while preparing the debate and writing the essays because everyone was working in the same area. I also felt that when we did not have the course work and debate to prepare, there wasn’t much else to do. Although I found...

...taking your family on a simple family vacation. It can be as elaborate as a week long trip to Disney or as simple as a couple days camping or at a water park and amusement park. Whatever your budget may be there are plenty of ways to make sure you and your family have a wonderful time nobody will forget. I still remember the first time my parents, my brother, and I all packed in to our car and headed on down to Florida for the first time, it was one of the best times we ever had together. We all still talk about that, and even occasionally pull out pictures just to prove who is telling the story right. I remember driving down the coast; it was like nothing I had ever seen before. The water looked so blue and the beaches were so white, my brother and I just couldn’t wait to get out and play on the beach. As I think about these times it helps me to realize I can do the same for my kids someday. This year my son is pretty excited about the camping trip we are taking up to Central Lake, Michigan. Although, sometimes the way he talks about it I’m not sure if he’s more excited about the camper we are borrowing from our friends, or the trip itself. He’s five this year so he is finally old enough to enjoy the lake and remember the good times I know we will have. Given we have another baby on the way this is a less expensive way for us to make those memories and not spend nearly as much as a trip to Disney might cost us. We were able to get the camper for free due to us being able...

...2008 Name________________ Date________________ “Canopy of Nature” Reading Comprehension – Short Stories Directions: Read the story. Then answer the questions below. Dad decided last Sunday that we should all go on a camping trip. He read an article in the Sunday paper about camping and how it “brings families together under the canopy of nature.” “Overrated,” I joked. “What about the canopy of television or the canopy of restaurant food?” “This will be good for us,” Dad said, sliding the magazine across the coffee table. “Let’s go next week-end.” I shot a quick look over at my little brother, Paul. He gave me a slow eyebrow raise which meant, “This will probably not go off completely as planned.” My smile back said, "But it will surely be fun." I started to think back. Once Dad decided “we should all learn how to canoe.” We borrowed two canoes from our friends, hoisted them on the van and drove for three hours to a secluded lake in Virginia. Once we got there, we discovered that we had forgotten the paddles. Paul and I got in a canoe with Dad, and our two younger sisters got in a canoe with Mom. We floated aimlessly around the lake for hours. Then we all jumped in with our life jackets on. We pushed the canoes back to shore. It was a fantastic trip. Another time, Dad decided “we should all learn how to ski.” All of us hate the cold so we spent the week-end huddled by the fire, drinking hot cocoa in the ski lodge and playing board games. It was great. We had a blast. When...

...My family, felt it would be a great learning experience to spend some quality time together. We were going on a camping trip. My dad is not the outsider type of man. My Mother pack us delicious subs because of this and that she doesn't like hunting. My brother just doesn't like the outdoors. Me and my brother were just wasn't this was for us but I was more pessimistically at the trip then My brother was. He thought if you try something completely out of your element, you'll will have a bad time. Realizing that I never went camping before I was anxious to learn the ropes of a hunter like what we used to do to survive before everything was given to us on a silver platter. I would have to hunt with a bow. But we all know I couldn't. We stocked up on interesting books to get lost in and relaxing sleeping bags to take off the edge and nap. We packed up the Van were we were the only other things that can fit into it and we were off. A friend of the family recommended the campsite and also he going on his own camping trip with his family so we decided to follow him since he had the directions and also he was on his own camping trip with his family. We traveled up interstate 75 into Maine because our campground was Recompence Shore Campground . Now, this is where I thought this trip was going to go down hill from there because ive had several times of bad luck when I was in Maine. One of them was I didn't fall asleep til four in the morning because of a duck. About fifteen minutes on...

...The Day my Life Changed Forever As a child one of our favorite activities was to go camping with our pop up camper. We went close to every weekend or every other weekend during the spring and summer seasons. As I was enjoying riding my bike I felt something that was unusual. I had a thirst that could not be quenched come over me and at the time I did not realize that this trip would be very different from any other in the past. We left for our usual camping trip on a Friday but this time we would be in the doctor’s office as they were opening on Monday morning. As I sit in the diabetic specialist’s office hearing the news that I was diabetic I realized that the life I had known so far would never be the same. It was August of 1989 we were on our way to another weekend of fishing, bike riding, and camping. I was eight years old at the time and was getting ready to start the third grade in elementary school. As soon as we got unloaded I could tell that I didn’t feel quite right. I had a thirst that I could not quench. There was a paved circle where our camper was parked and I remember riding my bike around it continually. In the middle of the circle was a water faucet for the campers to use any time they needed it. I can vividly remember not being able to pass that water faucet without stopping and drinking as much as I could stomach. We also had a case of soda and other drinks for the weekend that I finished off after a day at the campsite. The constant thirst...

...The Last Trip Keisha Brown ENC1101-12 Instructor Lemon August 9, 2012 Have you ever accomplished something that you did not think you could? My senior year of high school definitely proved this statement. My classmates and I climbed one of the highest mountains in the Shenandoah National Park, while facing numerous challenges. As I walked outside on my front porch, I thought it was rather cool to be going on a camping trip. I thought, “What the heck,” it was still going to be fun. As I arrived at school, I saw Curry, my teacher, and only a few more classmates. “Where is everyone,” I thought to myself. This was going to be the last camping trip high school. I kissed my grandmother goodbye and got my gear out of the car. “This is not going to be the typical camping trip that you are used to,” Curry explained. I wonder what he had in store for us Curry explained that we, as a group, had to plan the entire trip. That meant deciding what equipment to bring, what food to bring, and which mountain and hike we were going to take. We quickly figured this out and we were on our way. When we arrived at the park, I noticed that it was a bit cold. Being that I have camped in the past, I dressed appropriately. We started our journey onto the trail. “This isn’t going to be that bad,” I thought. As we were hiking, I looked at the trees that were turning into the colors of fall; red, orange, and yellow. Beautiful. As I was walking down the path, I could hear a familiar sound. It sounded...

...My family’s favorite activity has always been going camping together. Being in the woods away from distractions and responsibilities makes me appreciate the sense of community within my family. We may all live in the same place (except for my sister), but we live our own individual lives. I am constantly consumed with school to the point where I only have time to speak to my parents when we are sitting down for dinner. My dad works on the road most days while my mother remains busy by maintaining our home life. While I at least see my parents around the house, my sister Hannah started college this year at the University of North Georgia. There has never been more distance between me and my sister - literally. Although we can drift from each...

...is important. To make this idea more concrete for the students, we will then visit a nearby state park to learn from park rangers, have a picnic, and explore the forest. On this field trip, the students may see others enjoying the forests and doing different activities. This will lead to a discussion about recreational activities that forests can be home to. We will have talk about if the students have ever gone hiking, biking, fishing, or camping and if they enjoyed these activities. The teacher will then set up a camping dramatic play center. The students will work together, with the assistance of the teacher, to set up a tent and other features of a campsite. We will read books about camping like, S is for S'mores and Boris Goes Camping, to familiarize the students with camping and the supplies needed for camping. After reading S is for S'mores, we will make paintings with marshmallows. As our culminating activity, the students will plan a camping trip to the classroom for their families. They will make a packing list, which will include all the supplies we will need. They will also make a menu for this trip and ask their families to bring one of their dishes. The students will create models of camping sites out of a variety of materials to show their families at this event as well. For my initiating activity, I will begin by asking the students if they know what a forest is. I will ask students to describe things they might see in a forest and what makes a forest different...

...merely a week before I had to go to college, we once again went on a trip to the land purchased five years prior. We packed the same RV and rode in the same vehicle as in the last trip. As we left and got on the road, I wondered what the land, that I hadn’t seen in five years, would look like and to what degree the brush had populated it. I-90 traverses from Seattle and continues east across the country. Along this highway, dense trees give way to mountain views and lakes as it climbs up to Snoqualmie pass. Snow remains visible on higher peaks that jut up out of the earth even during the summer. Mountains are visible from all around as I-90 continues through the Cascade mountains toward Eastern Washington, where the lush mountain forests give way to an arid desert plain and the roads run straight for miles on end. Sand dunes appear orange in the distance as the sun sets. Irrigated fields of grapes and various other crops flank the highway. An occasional wind farm with a multitude of...

...case of planning a family get-away, the author clearly states that the project’s goal is to unplug, refresh, and recharge before school starts for her children. Her vision also contains main key factors and a spending budget that gives a more specific plan to achieving the family’s ultimate goal. These factors include specific missions that need to be met, what tangible items will be needed and how much money can be used to divvy up between all necessities. But how did the author acquire this vision? After compromising with her family on not staying home, but not spending too much money, they came up with camping. From the article it seems that there were other camping trips that did not go so well. This is where the Lessons Learned Meetings came to be. The family of four was able to discuss what had gone well in past trips and what needed to be improved for this ultimate trip to be successful. So with the input of the family, the author was able to come up with alternative ideas. I believe it was beneficial for the author to be aware the other family member’s points-of-view to get more insight. And once she was...
