...My Passion for English A close friend of mine suggested University of Phoenix as a good option for me to reach my goal of obtaining an English bachelor’s degree. This was a decision that has impacted my life in only a positive way. Before attending University of Phoenix I was unhappy with my previous schools. Transferring to Phoenix was a new beginning. The first class I completed was like no other I took in the past. I found my course challenging yet interesting, because the curriculum and interactivity with my learning team kept me motivated to complete it. From then on, I competed five classes back to back which has been the most consistent I have been with my courses since high school. So, my choice in attending University of Phoenix is one I am very grateful for. English as a language has become an essential form of communication in today’s society. Whether it is for a job or school, there is a growth of people who use and learn English from various countries. English lessens the barriers we have between cultures by helping people understand and connect with each other. Ever since I could read on my own at the age of three, writing and the arts has always inspired me. I grew up reading many genres of books and going to the library almost every day after school. That made me interested to create my own poems and short stories in a daily journal. To this day, English has captivated, and motivated me to pursue a career where I could use my skills to help other individuals...

...My experiences in the English language In the 3th grade I started having English classes. Back then I did not know how English would be such a big part of my life as it is today. I think that especially my generation use English on an everyday basis and as a way of a natural communication. One of the reasons why we speak, read, talk and write so much English is because of the social media. For the common youth of 2015 social media is a fundamental routine and habit of our everyday lives. We use social media to connect with people all over the world, in the English language. I also use my English to read articles, reviews, blogs, and watch YouTube videos. I really enjoy to watch movies as well, and sometimes it is not possible to get Danish subtitles, on some English talking movies. It is not only on the media I use the English language. I have read a lot of books on English too. Personally I think that in many cases the language in books are better, and more interesting, when it’s written in the author’s own language, and with his or hers own words. Some books don’t even get translated to Danish, and then it’s practical being able to read English. I have read books like the perks of being a wallflower, Shovel ready, IT, Lolita. Good English skills are also very convenient when you are in foreign countries. Most countries, especially the youth, are very...

...Nichele Rivera English 12 Prof. McPherson 6/1/15 My Melting Pot Growing up in America has been one of the most unexpected and surreal experiences. I am only twenty three years old but being from the Big Apple, New York and being raised by single parent, nothing in my life has ever been a walk in the park. I am considered a minority because I am Puerto Rican and African American and it has always been tough for me living in such an urban area. Not having the best financial status is what made thing even harder. My mother had to struggle to make ends meet for me, but we made it and are still making it. I have always seen my neighbors, friends, and family also experience the same hardships as me. Many of the people I know had to fight to make it America, and I mean that figuratively and literally. Some of the people I know weren’t even born here, and became citizens. I even know a few Aliens (immigrants who are living illegally in a country). Just learning to speak, read, and write a new language is a hurdle many who come here can never get over, so imagine having to find somewhere to live or a job to make money to survive. My melting pot country has shown me and taught me many things. I am American, we are as tough as they come. I have always said that being born here is what makes you a true American, and still believe that but, I have also come to see that immigrants venture here from other countries are the strength that America is known for as well. When you are born here...

...pre-school by my mother. A full seven-hour day of school seemed as if the day would never end. I could not make it through. I was used to doing a couple hours of school work; then I would be able to go outside and play. The concept of writing is mostly learned in elementary school. The complexity of writing increased as the years of English classes pasted. For some people writing comes natural to them, but for some writing is very difficult. I am in the group that is not good writers and it does not come natural. The difficult experience I had with writing is that my speech affected my first step in learning to write, crippled my writing structure and lowered my writing confidence; these speech issue discouraged me from writing....

...At an early age, my mom encouraged me when I grow up to choose a career that I would be happy with; a career that I would never regret going into. I loved painting and decorating, even now at the age of eighteen, but I could not decide what path I should take. That path has now been illuminated. I am seeking a major in business. This year, I have been preparing myself to take the courses necessary in order to obtain this degree. I am in marketing classes as well as a few other business classes which will help enhance my knowledge. In my dual credit English class I have already seen major improvements in my writing skills. I am in Beta, National Honor Society, and the drama club. It is a privilege to be inducted into these clubs. I find them...

...Writing Review Throughout this English 111 course, I have learned tremendous amounts of information and skills that I will carry with me and use throughout the remainder of my life. This class has helped me to not only become a better writer but also to become an active reader too. Needless to say, I have attempted this class in the past, this is the second time I have taken this course, and I must say I am glad that I did. Since then, I have learned and remember more from this semester than before such as the importance of pre-writing; choosing a topic and developing a thesis; how editing and revising can help construct an A paper. Unfortunately, I haven’t done any other writing this semester other than this class because this is the only...

...Writing has never been my strong suit. In fact, even though I’m a junior in highschool, I still write like a middle schooler. I thought taking English Composition would be difficult for me, and although it wasn’t always easy, the class wasn’t as bad as I expected. English Composition improved my writing craft and the length of my papers. When I first started this class I didn’t have much of an idea on how to create a well-written paper. I’m still not at the level I would like to be, but I have improved. I used to think that every paper written for school had to be formal, and you couldn’t start a sentence with “and” or “but” or with the same word for multiple sentences in a row. From taking this class I have learned that those are types of writer’s craft. Starting the sentence with the same word is an echo effect and it’s used for emphasis. The piece that I believe shows most of my improvement is my analysis. I chose to do this piece on a song called “Scars to Your Beautiful.” I wasn’t sure how to really write an analysis. At first I tried to write about a picture where there was a young girl who seemed to be overwhelmed by school. She was surrounded by books and there was tons of writing and equations on a chalkboard behind her. I had no idea where to even...

...English is an interesting subject to me, it is also very important to us especially we as students. We did nothing much on the first day of our english class but i also gain alot of things from my first day in english class. On the first day of class i got to know that my lecturer for english is Miss Yumni Yassin. Firstly we were asked to introduce ourself. Then our lecturer set some rules and regulation for us such as '' no late comers are allowed in the class'' and we can only speak english language in our english class even to our friends. Even though its hard for some students to follow theese instruction but i think setting these rules is very good idea. Because it makes us to be more discpline and punctual. Next we are given a chance to sound out what we aspect from our english class, and how to make our english class interesting for all of us. Besides that we are also required to take out a piece of paper and a pen. Then we are require to write down which part in english are we week in. After that we were asked to send the paper to her without writting our name this is because few of the students might be shy to tell about their weakness in english language because they think they will ''lose face''. Moreover our lecturer also gave us introduction about english and explain to us which part are we going to cover in this trimester for english, she also told us the importance of grammar to us. Finally we were dismiss. Eventhough our class were ''send one packing'' the first...

...Growing up, I had always enjoyed reading and writing. English had never been a problem for me so much as math had been. I had a love for literature. I've always loved reading books. You'd have to pull me away just so I'd put one down. So you can imagine when my fourth grade teacher Ms. Lux said, “you possibly could be held back another year, because you're not performing well in English.” My heart had dropped within that moment. I felt as if I were a failure. I felt as if I, me, someone who had a love for English, was not good enough. I could not understand. I felt rejected. How could I, someone who had enjoyed reading so much, be told that I may not be going to the fifth grade, because of my English scores? I felt in every ounce of my bones that that accusation could not have been right. It was preposterous. She put me through a series of English tests. Testing my abilities from comprehension to grammar, I felt that that this was unfair. I felt that she was singling me out. For what reason I have no clue to this day. Now I had always been a well-behaved kid. I never got into much trouble during my youth years. From the moment I entered her classroom, I felt as If she had a personal vendetta against me. Why was this happening to me? I cried myself into one of the greatest stories I had ever read. It was of the most intriguing adventurous stories ever. Ten year old Moon Blake learns how to survive on his own after his beloved father “Pap” dies, leaving him to fend for himself...

...My Final Self Reflections on My English Composition Course Learning new things in every semester is always fascinating for me. It is very important for a student to judge his/her skill at the end of a course by going over from the beginning to the end of his/her experience on the particular course which will help one to understand what was his/her mistake, how he/she could improve it, what would be better for him/her in the future and most important what should be his/her first priority. This semester was very changing for me. From my experience it is very surprising for me to review my English composition course this semester. At the beginning of this semester I realized how important it is to manage time for all the courses I was taking. It was very difficult for me to set time according to the priority of each course. In order to do all my assignments on time I decided to make my own calendar although I had accessibility for the Canvas calendar which helped me a lot to make proper use of my time. As time goes by I realized I have to change...
