...In nursing school, my clinical instructors instilled in me the importance of thinking like a nurse in a clinical environment and outside of a clinical environment. The application of my first aspect of clinical judgement happened outside a clinical environment shortly after graduating nursing school. During orientation process for my first nursing job, I continued to work as a pharmacy technician. One day while at work at the pharmacy, a customer came into the store with a noticeable shuffling gait. This was very alarming to me. It seemed as though she was also exhibiting some weakness in her legs while trying to maintain her balance against the shopping cart. I suddenly felt a funny feeling in my gut. I knew that this could be warning signs of a potential problem or condition. I approached the customer asking her did she need any assistance. The customer was profusely sweating, shaking and short of breath. Moreover, the elderly woman seemed quite...

...I was responsible for stocking shelves, handling financial transactions with customers and assisting them in finding products that they needed. As a cashier, I learned how to better communicate with difficult customers and handle complex situations. Being able to identify that customers' anger is usually situational helped me better serve my customers and direct my mental resources towards resolving problems. A. A. & A. Medical provides patients with at-home diagnostic services. Accompanying a medical technician, a technician assistant, and occasionally a physician, I visited elderly patients in their own homes, nursing homes and clinics. I helped the team with unloading equipment, administering electrocardiogram (ECG) and taking patients’ vitals. I had the opportunity to observe how diagnostic tests, such as ultrasound and electromyography, are performed. In addition, I was introduced to the many conditions diagnosed by these tests. I also learned about ECG interpretations of many cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Toma is specialized in pediatrics and internal medicine. Having the opportunity to shadow him helped me develop an appreciation for the role a physician plays in promoting the physical wellbeing of their patients. I observed him as he thoroughly and kindly informed his patients about their...

...Almost every individual has had, at least, one teacher throughout their lifetime. From helping students solve math equations to showing someone how to change a tire, teachers are valuable to society in multitudinous ways; but what if there were no teachers to serve in society? My personal experience was during my senior year of high school when my dual credit nursing instructor unexpectedly left our class midway through the semester; this was bad timing being that our class was scheduled to begin our clinical hours in just a few weeks, in which is where we practice our skills in a hospital setting. It is without a doubt that not having the adequate knowledge and skills to perform a task could cause a blockage in a person’s life but despite...

...This past summer, I was selected to participate in a research internship at the University of Illinois studying cancer and public policy. Lab work, being entirely new to me, was something I approached with vigor and anticipation, albeit a bit of nervousness, as I didn’t have much lab experience. However, I knew I was ready to step out of my comfort-zone and begin learning. The only way to improve was to put in the effort, and I was ready to start. At first, the work challenged me intensely. The language of academia was difficult to understand, and I had to learn to decipher the meaning in the texts I read during my literature review. As I grew more accustomed to the analytical vocabulary and prose present in scientific journals, my work...

...I still remember my first patient from my first clinicals. She was about my age, but came from a much different background. She was African American and came from a low-income family. Despite our diversity, we began to talk and she began to tell me about how lonely she felt and how none of her friends would visit her during her frequent hospital visits. Even though I had assignments to do and charting to finish, I sat in her room for hours and let her know that she had a friend. We talked about all the things she had going on in her life and I just sat and listened. I made sure that anytime she was readmitted to the hospital I would visit her and let her know that she had people that cared about her. I did not let any prejudices get in the...

...My time spent at the Campus School has flown by. This clinical experience has been so informative and transformative for me. I have been able to gain so much knowledge, insight, and most importantly, build relationships during my time at the Campus School. When I first arrived at the Campus School I was a little taken back. I was informed that it was a pediatric population that was pretty severe. Other than that, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I arrived and found a population that was medically complex, had a lot of equipment needs, and had large care teams to help support the students and their families. All of the students have developmental delays, are non-verbal and various levels of cognition. I was nervous to start working with this population, but I was excited for the challenge....

...My clinical experience and diversity project school location is Girard middle school in a 7th grade Kansas History class and 8th an grade American History classes. Girard is surrounded by rural farm land to the west and north, the City of Pittsburg is the largest neighboring city to the southeast. The demographic makeup of Girard is similar to most schools in southeast Kansas. Girard has a near perfect ratio in gender, with males comprising a slightly larger group than the females. Economically a little under half (47.20%) of the students who attend the middle school fall into the economically disadvantaged category. I was not surprised by this number, since I have noticed students in the classes wearing the same clothes, multiple days in...

...Clinical Laboratory Science as a Career There are many influences that went into my decision to select Clinical Laboratory Science as my career field, from personal interest to academic experiences. For as long as I can remember science and math classes have fascinated me, and using those skills to work in an exciting and rapidly-moving subject area that is highly relevant to major issues facing society today furthers my desire to work in a clinical laboratory setting. My passion for science and math later got me involved in research. I am currently working on a research project investigating the Epstein-Barr virus; which was the first virus discovered to cause human cancer. My favorite part of this project is the opportunity to apply my skills and knowledge in a laboratory setting. While reading about an experiment in a textbook is interesting, the excitement of completing such experiments in a real world setting is impossible to replicate. Working on this research project solidified my passion for working in a laboratory.. Through careful consideration of majors and careers tailored to my interests and skill, I have chosen Clinical Laboratory Science as a career. A career utilizing such a major is a crucial component of the...

...I started my undergraduate education interested in studying human behavior and how it impacts decision-making. I pursued a political science degree with an international relations concentration because I was also interested in learning about conflict resolution strategies on an international scale. I then double-majored in social policy & practice because I wanted to approach problems from a policy standpoint. However, when I took a human rights course, I learned about the multitude of atrocities humans have committed for hundreds of years, and I became interested in discovering more about the psychological factors that contribute to a person’s ability and desire to commit such violent, horrendous acts. Accordingly, I recognized the benefit...

...Reflection: My Learning Experience Reflection: My Learning Experience Description: John’s model is a structured reflection that helps people learn through reflecting on events (Johns, 1996). This model has guided me to reflect on my experience which has enabled me to be more competent in my practice. During my first day of clinical placement at Extendicare York I experienced a unique event. My teacher, fellow students, and I got the chance to observe a health care aid change a colostomy pouch. I was extremely curious and excited for this new learning opportunity. Before entering the resident’s room I knew a little bit about colostomies. My clinical teacher, Jon Brunetti, attempted to prepare me by providing me with more information about colostomies. This made me feel confident walking into the resident’s room. A study shows that having a good clinical teacher enables students to have positive attitudes and good learning outcomes towards their clinical placement (Campbell, Larrivee, Field, Day, & Reutter, 1994). My clinical teacher further guided us by introducing himself and our class when we entered the resident’s room. He tried to make the resident feel comfortable by talking to her and asking her questions. This approach did not seem to work because of her lack of positive responses. Being the only student prepared with latex gloves I assisted the health care aid with the procedure. I helped by holding the residents legs down thus...

...This assignment will evaluate and explore the experience of mentoring a student in practice, critically analysing topics that will reflect on the role of the mentor, within the context of the nursing profession. The placement area concerned is a 14 bedded acute elderly assessment ward, which caters for both male and female patients. Several students have been placed on our ward over the years, it is the mentors responsibility to provide students with appropriate support, guidance and supervision within the clinical environment, Myall 2008. One of the key issues that need to be considered in preparation for an effective learning environment would be making sure the student is aware of the situations that could arise on the ward, discussing typical events that could happen on a daily basis. clinical experience can be a stressful part of the nursing program, working in a unfamiliar area, working with difficult patients and the fear of making mistakes. Hutchinson (2003) believes that a teacher should aim to provide an environment in which learners feel safe to experiment, voice their concerns, identify their lack of knowledge and stretch their limits. One of the major factors affecting learning is the environment in which it takes place. It is the responsibility of professional staff to create and develop an environment conductive to learning (Price, 2004). This implies that the environment should be continually monitored...
