My family history is rather colorful on both sides of my family. Both my Mother and Father’s side of the family have a rich history that has been fairly documented through physical and oral tradition. In this paper, I hope to fit in what I can about both sides of my family. Starting with my Father’s side of the family, the Bloomberg’s come from Stockholm, Sweden. My Great-Great-Great Grandfather John Bloomberg immigrated to the United States in the late 1890’s and had their name changed to Blomberg; oddly enough most other Bloomberg's who immigrated to the United States kept their last name the same. As I have stated previously, my Father’s side of the family is mostly Scandinavian, French, and Native Canadian. However on my Mother’s side of the family, her Mother, the Stephenson’s, are Scotch-Irish and my Grandfather’s side, the Frey’s, was primarily German. Through research on my Grandmother’s part, she just recently traced her lineage back to Charlemagne, but I was unable to talk with her in time about it to go into greater detail. My parent’s marriage was also a melting of religions. My Mother’s side of the family was Roman Catholic whereas my Father’s side of the family is Methodist.
With my Mother’s side of the family, the situation is kind of the opposite. I do not remember much about my Mother’s family history, but I do remember the traditions. With my Grandmother being Roman Catholic, it has always been important for our family to celebrate Easter, Christmas, and St. Patrick’s Day. The past three or so odd years Christmas Eve dinner has devolved into more of a buffet under the guise that it is because my Grandmother is getting older and just doesn’t want to go through all the trouble when in reality my aunt and the majority of my cousins just want to get their presents and leave. It is pretty sad really, but it is not like I can do anything about it and my Grandma is aware of it, which just makes it worse. Then Christmas Day we, not including my aunt and cousins, would go to my Great-Aunt Deanna Frey’s in Arden Hills and have another formal Christmas dinner. However, this stopped a couple years ago due to my aunt’s worsening COPD.
