I grew up in a very fortunate family; we never really had to worry about a low income, and we were able to buy extra stuff and go on other trips unlike other families. I never really understood how we were able to do this seeing as my parents did not go to college. They also rarely ever read; if they did it would be a magazine or an article online, and they never wrote. My parents would always push me to read more and always do well on my writing assignments and review them over and over again so they would be the best of my ability. Back then I never really understood why they would make me do all of this, but now that I am a bit older and understand how important these traits are, I understand why they did this.
I’ll never forget my English teacher my junior year of high school, Mr. Stanizzi. He was the most inspirational teacher I have ever had in my life. He genuinely loved his job and made English class fun, and fascinating. By this time I thought for sure that no teacher was ever going to change my opinion on writing, but he proved me wrong. There was something he did while teaching and analyzing poems that really struck my interest. Every week we would have a period just focusing on either writing our own poems or analyzing them. There was one particular poem that I was extremely proud of and showed Stanizzi the poem. He was shocked that I wrote such a good poem. He liked my poem so much he read it to the class for an example and he still reads it to his classes to this day. At this moment I realized that I actually enjoyed writing poems and that people actually enjoyed reading them.
Since then I have genuinely enjoyed reading, analyzing and writing poems. Before this I looked at doing all of this as almost a chore, or a punishment of some sort but now that this has

My Family

...Over the course of the semester, I have learned a lot about myself and my family as a whole. Family problems and social change has made me realized that family plays an important role in shaping your actions and forming your perceptions. Family dynamics have obviously changed over the centuries; things that are going on in this day and age are not the same as it was decades ago. As for my family, we come from an Afro-Caribbean background; we are natives of Haiti. My parents migrated from Haiti to Bahamas and from there to America with four children, in hopes of providing a better future for us. They worked odd jobs here and there just to provide shelter, food, and other necessities that we would need. The only burden my parents ever placed on my siblings and I, were to receive an education and strive to be successful. They made many sacrifices to provide us with these opportunities, and for that I will forever be grateful. Nonetheless, I will be discussing the differences between generations of my family. I decided to interview my grandmother Ermilie and my father Luc. Themes in Ermilie’s Life (born 1936) Ermilie is my grandmother on my mother’s side. She is the only one of my grandparents that is still alive. Seeing that we were immigrants for quite some time, I only had access to my immediate family and a few cousins. I met my grandmother for the first time on June 4th, 2014. Over the years I could only talk to her; it was a joyous moment for me to finally put a face with...

My Family

...My Family Have you ever influenced by some important people that helped you be the person that you are today? I have. The people that have had influence on me are the most important people, my family. But before I begin talking about my family, I want to show to you the place that me and my family spend most of the time together which also means something important to me and my family. This place is called the family room. This room is small but beautiful. It is painted in white and has three windows decorated with beautiful curtains. By the windows you can see a nice view of some beautiful trees and a nice park across street. On the walls there are family photos like the ones that show where my brother and I were born. The other one is my graduation photo. Some family member photos like my grandparents, and some paintings made by my brother. So this is our room, which is very important to us and has a lot of special things, but the most special part of this room is when it brings my family together. I could begin the story of my life with a picture of my parents. They are important because they helped in my development. Also, my parents gave me the things that I needed to grow up in the moment that I needed and they still gave me everything that I needed to become someone important in the future. Beside these things is the education that I have gained all in my life. My basic needs like food, clothes, medicine, a place to live, and the most important thing...

My Family

...Family Business Discovery Project * Katie Toomey ENTR 423 February 26, 2016 My father’s side of the family is not very proud of its past from what I can tell. They aren’t proud or they are trying to distance themselves from events that happened in the past that they think are severe enough to erase from history. My family proved to me that past generations directly affect your work ethic, not always in the best of ways. My grandfather worked hard to get away from his father, my grandmother tricked her dad to let her get a job to escape his alcoholism. This shows me that it is up to the individual to interpret their situation and decide on how to act. It is theses interpretations that lead many in my family to make these crazy impulsive decisions. My grandfather, John Toomey, was 13 when he got off a train purposefully at the wrong stop and decide to travel and work until he was old enough to join the Navy. He saw his family only 3 times after that and wanted very little to do with them. My grandfather thought he was the reason for his mother’s death, but she had died from pneumonia six months after he was born. In a typical fashion no one in the family wanted to speak about it so he went on with his life thinking he was what killed his mother until he was 42 years old. His family moved to Washington to work at a lumber mill and he didn’t want to join them and his new step-mother. He worked as a farm hand, grocer boy, gas pumper, and any other job he could come...

My Family

...What is Family? Defining the concept of family is difficult because it can have various meanings to different people. It may mean those who are immediate relatives, as being in love, providing security, socialization, or something completely different. The United States Census Bureau (2010) defines family as a, “Primary social group involving social or generational alliances, permanence, concern for the total person, heightened emotionality, caring for one another, mutual goals, an altruistic orientation to members, and a governance approach that is nurturing.” Freidman, Bowden and Jones (2003) also states family is composed of persons joined together by bonds of marriage, blood, or adoption and residing in the same household (p.9). These are just some of the many definitions of family I have come across in my search. We are never given a chance to choose our family, however that is why knowing and learning the meaning of family is essential. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate and define what family is. I will explain my own familial experiences over the years, and how this definition is constantly changing. I will also share the perspectives of others on how they view family. Finally, I will share my definition of family, including the theoretical foundation I find most helpful to explain it. Various Perspectives on Family In recent weeks, I have had the opportunity to speak with my own family, coworkers, and friends about what family means to them. My children...

Me and My Family

...Analysis interpretation of ’Me and my Family’ “Me and my Family” is a short story from 1997. The narrator is a third-person limited narrator and is subjective because it conveys the thoughts, feelings, opinions of the father, Stew. So when the narrator is subjective, we only see the story from one side and therefore we cannot verify if the narrating is true. Beside Stew, we have Masha who is the wife of Stew and mother of Kitty. Kitty plays an important and great role in this short story. Apart from the family, we hear a bit from Norm (an acquaintance of the father) and other irrelevant people. Kitty has been living in South Carolina and is described as quiet, untactful and aggressive (p. 2, l. 25) by the narrator. When Kitty became a teenager, it has just gone downhill. She came out as lesbian when she was 16 (p. 2, l. 37) and that did not exactly help her relationship with her father. With downhill, the narrator describes; “He did not remember precisely when it had happened, but Kitty, his beautiful, happy little girl, turned into a glum, weird teenager that other kids picked on. She got skinny and ugly. ” (p. 2, l. 40). The quote illustrates one of the themes of the story that is the poor relationship between father and daughter and their quarrels, as can be seen on page 3, line 86: “He grabbed her and shook her, but he could not shake the conviction off her face.” However, this is from the father’s perspective. As mentioned before, we never get to hear Kitty’s side of...

My Family Heritage

...Tracing family history and lineages can be a hassle, a hard one at that. Some families have absolutely no trace of their tree, and some keep every record at every disposal. My family was never the one to appreciate the fragility and the necessity of keeping track of your ancestors, for it is their mistakes you can learn from, it is their traditions that we carry on or alter, and it is their name that we descend to our younger ones. Fortunately, I went into full research last year using both AncestryDNA’s database and excerpts from my close family members and was able to conclude a strong understanding of my family’s heritage. My mother’s side of the family emigrated from Sicily in the early 90s and settled in Lebanon, where they adopted the...

Being Strong for My Family

...Being Strong For My Family Parenting never played well in my childhood as it seems my parents were never for it. Though it made me a stronger person than my parents ever was. It was always just me and my two younger brothers on our own most of the time. My parents didn’t get married until I was three years old, since my dad was tired of the government taking money out of his paychecks for child support he just decided to marry my mom that way he’s not obligated to do so. Then came along my brother Eric, and that’s when the abusing started with me and my mother. One time the cops did came and took my dad but for some reason my mother let him come back home. Then a year went by and comes along my second brother Mickey who’s born on Christmas day, a lucky boy he was. And the abuse continued, and became normal where my mom and dad would argue at least once a week. I would usually have to pretend I don’t hear anything or my dad would come at me next too. He was a alcoholic and gambler, drinking a case of beer every other night and going to the casino on his days off. There was a time he was gone for three nights and me and my mom went to find him at the casino, which turns out he had gambled the rent money away and was trying to win it back, of course that didn’t happen. My dad never liked me just because I was a girl I would get those side shaved bowl haircuts, with boots and a jean jacket outfit to school, which kids always made fun of me about. He would never drive me to...
