...My First Day in English Class English is an interesting subject to me, it is also very important to us especially we as students. We did nothing much on the first day of our english class but i also gain alot of things from my first day in english class. On the first day of class i got to know that my lecturer for english is Miss Yumni Yassin. Firstly we were asked to introduce ourself. Then our lecturer set some rules and regulation for us such as '' no late comers are allowed in the class'' and we can only speak english language in our english class even to our friends. Even though its hard for some students to follow theese instruction but i think setting these rules is very good idea. Because it makes us to be more discpline and punctual. Next we are given a chance to sound out what we aspect from our english class, and how to make our english class interesting for all of us. Besides that we are also required to take out a piece of paper and a pen. Then we are require to write down which part in english are we week in. After that we were asked to send the paper to her without writting our name this is because few of the students might be shy to tell about their weakness in english language because they think they will ''lose face''. Moreover our lecturer also gave us introduction about english and explain to us which part are we going to cover in this trimester for english, she also told us the importance of grammar to us. Finally we were dismiss...

...Professor Czaja English 101 September 9 2015 If there was one thing I learned freshman year, it was to not believe what everyone has to say. Everyone told me that freshman year classes were the easiest, and they were completely wrong. Sadly it was back to reality, no more staying up late and sleeping in with not a worry about what I was going to do that day. Now I had a schedule to follow Monday through Friday that involved homework, studying, writing essays, and soccer practice. It was seven thirty in the morning on the first day of school, which was the earliest I had been up in 3 months and I was already working on an assignment. I never would have guessed my first day of classes would involve graded assignments and homework. I assumed it would be full of listening to the teacher explain the ten page long syllabus that only comes in use during the first week of school, while I daydream about my summer, trying to fight my eyelids from closing. But the assumption I made about the typical first day of high school was completely wrong and it changed my outlook on high school for the rest of the year. It’s seven thirty in the morning, the sun is barely out and I’m already sweating through my t-shirt. Luckily I am not the only one, as I look around the classroom everyone looks miserable and fatigued. You could tell everyone wanted to be anywhere but at Anderson High School. The bell had just rung and our English teacher introduced himself and it seemed like it was going...

...their goal. Each person quits for personal reasons. My experience is different from others. Before I even began the path to learn English, I thought about giving up. Later, when I was in that path, I almost gave up a couple of times. I struggled immensely in middle school; but not so much during my four years at high school. First, I gave up because I have heard that learning English was not easy. My old friends used to tell me learning English as your second language is very, very difficult almost impossible; “only few can make it,” they said. Second, my first day of school in this great nation was unpleasant. I considered that day, one of the worst days of my life. Looking back, now I consider it one of the great days of my life; because life without risks is no life. Third, my first two months at high school was like being in hell; because I was not being treated fairly by other students. The unpleasant moments I had during that two months was because of a lack of knowledge. Everything comes to an end sooner or later. When I was in Mexico. I wanted to learn English for a couple of reasons. One of them is because my parents wanted to bring me here to the United States to continue with my education. The other reason was because people that speak more than two languages have more opportunities in academic, professional, and/or in personal life. However, when I told my friends about taking an English class, they were shocked. They have been in this country...

...Huang Xu ESL 33B 2/3/2015 My Experience of English Learning As leaning English for almost fifteen years, I have to say I had a lot of experience of learning this language. Yes, I studied English for fifteens, it’s been a long time, but I still can’t speak English fluently. Honestly I don’t think my English is close to “fluently”, I think my English still can describe as “broken” or “fractured”, just like Amy Tan’s mother. The good news is I can feel my improvement, and maybe in years, my English would no longer be “broken”. Any way, as learning English for fifteen years, I always have some interesting things to share. There’s too much to talk about, like my favorite teacher, or the worst teacher I’ve ever met, or the experiences I went through when I first come to America. But because Amy Tan and Elizabeth Wong’s stories, I’d like to share the story about my first English teacher Mrs. Wu and my mother. So let me talk about Mrs. Wu first. I met her in the first year I went to elementary school. She is not the English teacher in school, and actually she was not the real first English teacher I met, but she made me interested in English. We already started to study English in grade one. However my parents thought the English that I learn in elementary school was too basic, and they thought English will be very useful. So they find me an English class outside the school, I met Mrs. Wu there. I didn’t want to have the class at first. I have no wish to learn a foreign language...

...in the midst of an affluent society.” He also said, “When you are humiliated day in and day out by nagging signs reading ‘white’ and ‘colored’; when your first name becomes ‘nigger’ and your middle name becomes ‘boy’ and your last name becomes ‘John,’ and when your wife and mother are never given the respected title ‘Mrs.’.” After suffering and getting treated so harshly, all of the former slaves fought for their rights and freedom. Today, everyone, of any ethnic background, has the right to live freely in the U.S.A. Slaves suffered to that extent and because of them, every other face we see here besides white, has the same rights all Americans do. If America would have still been in slavery, then everyone from around the globe would probably be considered only as...

...NARRATIVE REPORT 1. Weekly Narrative Report a. First Week: November 24-28, 2014 “New challenges were started, new experiences were encountered, and new learnings were met—all these things came in the first week of my practice teaching experience.” As I was assigned in Vicente B. Ylagan National High School (VBYNHS), I discovered that practice teaching was a very crucial part of a student-teacher’s life. In the very first day of our practice teaching, 24th day of November 2014, together with my colleagues, daily schedule and subjects were given to us and we were assigned to our cooperating teachers. Based on my schedule’s list, I have a one-hour class period in the morning, from 8:20 to 9:20 for English class and two-hour class from 1:00 to 2:00 and another 3:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon for both MAPEH class. It was a big relief to have my minor subject-MAPEH because there were no computations anyway, but having its four components was not as easy as pie. And, the cooperating teachers that were given to me were Sir Jaypee Jimenez for my English subject and Sir Eleno Bandayrel for my MAPEH. Besides, on that day, we also met the professional teachers on that institution, few new colleagues and students with unfamiliar faces, and my major and minor class-9-Onyx and 9-Jade. Aside from that, we had figured out their classrooms, canteen and offices as well. As the time went on, I took the road of difficulties in each day: travel going to school and going back home, everyday...

...It was one rainy day in Southern California. I was on my way to school riding shotgun, my day had started off right. I did not mind the rain until I got off the car. All you hear is a big splash. My feet were soaked. I could feel the cold water seeping into my socks. “Well this is a bad start to my day,” I said out loud. I walk inside school and rush to class before I got another tardy slip. That would have ruined my day. Finally, I sit down in my favorite desk and wait for Advisory to start. I loved Advisory because I could finish my homework or talk to my friends. The next bell rang for first period. I had AP English Literature with Ms.Wyatt who was also my basketball coach. As soon as I walked into the classroom I felt a cold air hit my...

...Chronicles of IB It was my first day of IB English SL class. I always thought English was a subject where there was nothing to study. Throughout my time studying in the Indian Board, I considered English as one of the easiest subjects. But this was about to change. “Ms. Meredith Klein”, my professor’s name was written on the board with the class name “IB English Standard Level” under that with a bunch of other things written around it. As my teacher started describing the syllabus it was becoming my worst nightmare. She divided the two years of the IB program, into 4 parts and called each of the 4 units by a different genre. The funny thing was I just knew two types of genres at that time: fiction and non-fiction. The first one of the four genres she described was Classics. There were two big books I had to read for this, “The Scarlet Letter” and “The Assault” and study both the literary works intensively and at last present a detailed study of one of the book. This was another nightmare for me because throughout my life the only books I had read were a bunch of Famous Five and all in my fifth grade. I felt like it was the worst time of my life. All I did before my 11th grade was read summaries on the Internet and all of a sudden that proved as a waste of time in IB. It was not helpful at all. I knew the reading was extremely important and I still kept on procrastinating and read the books without understanding. The program was called a pre-university course and so it was extremely...

...had high expectations nor thought this class would be enjoyable. When looking at DegreeWorks for classes and seeing English 101 and 102, I was puzzled with the reason behind the courses; however, as the course is coming to a close, I realize the reason behind the courses- to broaden my thoughts on how to elevate my writing to a new standard. When thinking about how good of a writer I am, I have never thought of myself as a good writer, since there is always some improvement that can be made, though I think my greatest strength as a writer is my willingness to accept criticism to improve my writing and become a better writer. My greatest weakness in writing papers in my thesis, where it is difficult for me to relate my information back to my thesis and change my traditional way to create theses that would better fit with the academic lifestyle. Throughout this course, I believe I have developed as a writer, learning that there is no set way to write a...

...when I first arrived in United States, I have experience numerous difficulties in school that I would never forget. In addition, I believe immigrant students of secondary school can face major difficulties in learning English and succeeding in school. Since these students do not have a lot of time than elementary students to learn English, and they have to pass several test that require English skill such as the ACT and SAT. Above all, most secondary school texts and materials require a sufficient English reading ability to understand, which will even make learning experience becoming even tougher for high school immigrant. Before going into detail, lets take a look at the statistics of the United States’ immigration in the past few decades. According to U.S Bureau of the Census 1997a statistic, over a million immigrants, legal and illegal, entering the United States each year. And since the passage of the Immigration Act of 1965, which eliminated national origin quotas. Europe is no longer the main sources of newcomers to the United States but instead of Asia and Latin America. The largest groups come from Mexico, China, Cuba, and Vietnam. In the fall of 1997, 9 million (about one in five) elementary and secondary school students had a foreign born parents. With over 90% of recent immigrants coming from non English speaking countries, schools are increasingly receiving students who do not speak English at home and who have little or no proficiency in English (U.S. Bureau...

...lot of great things in my first semester of college, specifically in my English 1101 class. However, this semester of learning for me didn’t happen without any failures. Coming into college I felt as though I didn’t have any flaws. I examined myself personally, I felt good about my ability to do work in classes, and I even was eager when it came to groupwork in the past. But in each of these of these categories I had minor flaws that I didn’t know of, but were fixed throughout my time in my English class. This semester I failed. Now I’m not talking about letter grades or tests, I’m talking about failing in skills I thought I didn’t have problems with. When I started English 1101, one failure I had almost right away was managing...

...The path to english There i was on a sunny august day in st louis missouri, it was the first day of school and i was starting 5th grade my family had just moved to the U.S over the summer. I was feeling very anxious that day, i didn’t know weather i was ready for school here or not. I didn’t know the language, i didn’t know anyone, everything was just different here. It had been only few months since we moved here so i was still feeling homesick missing all my friends there, i really didn’t like being in United states at that time. There i was in a school in different country, with random people around me and not having any idea what to say. I had known very little english when i first came here, i could write a little bit and only knew few words like hey, or what's up. I came from India a non-english speaking country, to the United states ,a english speaking country. Since i didn’t even know a little bit of english they had to put me in a special class ESOL. It was a program to help the non english speakers learn how to read and write. I had a very nice teacher named Mrs. Taylor, she was an older lady in her 50’s. She was always helpful and nice to me, she’s basically the reason that today i am able to read and write and fully understand the language. I was struggling in the beginning but Mrs. Taylor helped me, she worked with me at my pace and helped me understand English better. I remember struggling through all my classes almost all the way to middle school, i wouldn’t...

...Cheng Cai Sheila Knight EH100 04/04/12 My English learning experience I was born in a non-English family. I started to learn English when I was in primary school in China. After that, I became gradually interested in this new language and, nowadays, my English level is continuing to improve. From my English learning experience, I have really learned many valuable things. First, it helps me realize not to give up halfway when facing difficulties. Also, it helps me know that I must take everything seriously. Thus, English actually has a significant effect on my life. Studying in the primary school was happy and easy for most of the pupils. For me, it was different. When I heard that I had to learn English in primary school, I was surprised and a little frightened. I was just a Chinese boy and I did not know the knowledge of reading and writing in Chinese very well. How could I learn a new foreign language? I still remember my first English class, and it was really a great challenge for me. In the class, the teacher taught us to say "Good morning" and "Good afternoon." At first, the teacher read the words slowly, and I knew how to pronounce them. Then the teacher asked us to read the sentences one by one, but I suddenly felt nervous and forgot how to read them. When it was my turn, I just read them ambiguously. After class, I felt ashamed, and I did not have confidence to learn English anymore. When I came home and told my mother what had happened, she encouraged me and...

...English 114 29 September 2014 Literacy Narrative I walked into my 10th grade English class on the first day of school and was greeted by my peppy, upbeat teacher, Mr. Mathew Kahn. I knew it was going to be a fun semester just from that first day of class. Mrs. Kahn gave us a lot of freedom to write what we wanted, when we wanted to. He had an amazing ability to communicate with students. It might have been because of his young age, so he knew how to satisfy teenagers like us. This teacher taught the material from his heart. He was making sure that everybody had understood the lesson before they leave. This helped me mold my papers into perfection with the help of Mrs. Kahn’s exceptional editing skills. He taught me how to write a paper that only I could come up with. He encouraged me to do this by using different writing techniques. A teacher that doesn’t take himself too seriously always will be a big hit with teenagers, although he’s not afraid to impose his authority if he has to. He would open every lesson in a disciplined manner by quickly silencing the class and getting on with the work while still having his bright positive attitude. This was a rarity at my school because my peers would typically waste the first twenty minutes of class. Mr. Kahn showed his students that he actually cared if we learned from his lessons or not. He made sure to get to know us on a personal level as well. We all had a relationship with him and knew if we ever needed anything...
