...A person’s first week at college is one of the most significant transition periods in their life. It is ultimately one of the most surprising, frightening, and enjoyable experiences they will have. My first week at NDSU was no exception to this. There were things about my first week that I was completely not expecting, things that didn’t surprise me at all, and things that have been very rewarding. First, multiple things about my first week of college surprised me. One of these things was that the days don’t go by nearly as slowly as I thought they would. In high school, I was at school from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on any given day, and no matter what, the time seemed to go unbearably slow. I thought that I would be experiencing the same feeling of the day dragging on in college. Because I don’t live on campus, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays I have a 5 p.m. class, on those days I am typically on campus from 9:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. I didn’t think I would be able to handle long school hours again, especially hours even longer than I was at high school. However, there are so many ways to stay busy at NDSU that the hours practically fly by in a comparison to high school. The seemingly shorter school days are just one of the things that surprise me about NDSU. Second, there were several things about college that met my expectations exactly. For example, going into college I figured that there was going to be a very large amount of homework in comparison to high school. I was...

...My first day at college is an important event of my life. It was an unforgettable day for me because I was very nervous. During my school days I had a glimpse of college life from my cousins. I thought that the college life would offer me a free life; here restrictions would be few and threats of teacher would be little. I was admitted to . I entered the college premises with new hopes and aspirations. I was glad to see that the college presented a new sigh. It was quite different from what I had seen in and around our school. I came many across many unknown faces. My first day of college consisted of me doing an initial assessment which didn’t go so well because my computer would not work so I had to wait for one. I went to my first class really early so that I could get a good seat, as I approached the door of my class my legs buckled and became heavy, my inside turned over and I had butterflies, fortunately for me there were some students that I knew from my old school. I tried to make new friends with the other students. Getting to know your teachers was very exciting because they treated you different from teachers from high school, they treat you more maturely and you have more responsibilities. I do the health and social care course which is very good because it teaches you the different aspects on helping people not only older but younger people too. My course has been fun because we got to do role plays and different activities to enhance our...

...My name is Jordan and I am a freshman at Westminster College. I am an out-ofstate student from Idaho and I plan on having a career in Mechanical Engineer. I came to Westminster College to play for the soccer team and well as for the skiing in the area. I live in Hogle Hall and throughout my experiences living in the dorms I have observed many different things that I have written about. My observations are about the general dorm life, students study habits, setup of college, and roommate relationships at Westminster College. I will discuss these topics in the same order that I observed them, from the first month, to the second month, and then finally to the fourth month, the end of the semester. Dorm Life at Westminster College I have experienced once a month and three days of college. I have observed and analyzed the dorm life at Westminster College and will present my observations that pertain to the overall design of the dorms, the significances of the dorms to students social lives, and the difference in the design of upper classmen to lower classman dorms. The Hogle Hall dormitory is three stories and has a main common room in the middle of every floor. There are dorm rooms all down each side of the hall way and the community restrooms are conveniently located in the first doors down the hall from each of the common rooms, boy’s and girl’s restrooms are on opposite sides of the common room. The doorway, for the only stairwell in the building, is also located in the common...

...Responsibility and College Success Jennifer James Gen/200 07/20/2014 Heather Coldani Personal Responsibility and College Success Personal responsibility can have many definitions because each individual views personal responsibility differently. I believe that personal responsibility is the ability of each individual to maturely respond to the various challenges and circumstances of life. The challenges I face in my life are work, school and my personal life. Without personal responsibility I would not be able to balance between them. While not everyone believe you need to have personal responsibility to succeed, I believe that having personal responsibility is the key to success in college and in life because it is our capability to handle all of life’s challenges and accepting responsibility for our actions. Life brings each one of us so many challenges and it is hard to balance all of them together without getting stressed. Personal responsibility is needed in order to balance all of these challenges. I never thought I would be capable of working fulltime and going to school but I took action by putting my personal responsibility to use. It was hard for me to accept responsibility at first because I have never been a responsible person but I realized without it college success would be impossible. Failure to accept responsibility for the things in my life that made me unhappy would have led to me making excuses with no progress toward the goals in my life. I decided...

...Transition to College Being nervous about the first day of college was definitely how I felt before starting. I knew that I was walking onto a campus more than four times the size as my high school and I was scared about getting lost. Luckily on the first day I was able to locate all of my classes because I had my little map out but that first week I made it late to one or two classes because I could not find how to get to a certain building that was off campus. Having a class that was actually off campus was something I did not realize could be possible but fortunately enough it is. As a commuter I could say that the college life is a lot more fun in high school because in a way you have more freedom but one could have the total freedom if they were able to dorm. Commuting almost an hour away every day is a pain in the butt, but the fact that I don’t have classes on Friday definitely makes up for it for me! They say that as life goes on you move on to bigger and better things. That is definitely true especially when it comes to school but you also move on to harder things as well. When people say that college is not easy they definitely mean it. My first semester as a freshman has not been quite too easy. Sometimes you get assigned a lot of work but then again compared to high school; you have more time to work on those assignments since you are not in school for the entire day. These are the times when I am definitely going to miss high school and I am only going to miss...

...DiQuan Washington Mrs. dionne Wesley GE:102 7/07/12 Transition from high school to college When you went to college did you ponder on the thought on how much college was different from high school? The differences are substantial and can be a lot to handle at once. When I first got here I didn’t know what to expect coming straight out of high school. Till this day I still don’t know what to expect but as time goes on you learn to go with it and adapt to you surroundings. When I arrived at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) I noticed a few differences between my high school and my current university right away. The transition from high school to college was difficult to comprehend, because of the change in friends, not working, eating habits, environment, and my independence. My friends have changed a lot due to the transition from high school to college. I noticed that I have a rather difficile time keeping in contact with my friends back home. The distance between us makes it hard for us to spend time with one another. Also I have friends that attend other universities and the school schedule on top of my own makes it impossible for us to spend and adequate amount of time with each other. The thing I miss the most though would have to be working with my friends, they made it galvanize and worthwhile. I noticed since I have no one to share that same excitement with at any work place, I find myself not striving for employment. I haven’t had a job since I left high...

...Cole Evans September 24th, 2014 12 Part Essay College Writing I Prof. Stockwell A New Era ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- “The secret to a rich life is to have more beginnings than endings.” Dave Weinbaum One Last Wake Up Call The sharp sound of my mother’s voice cut through my shield of sleep, abruptly jerking me awake. “Cole! Wake up!” Any other morning my usual routine would be to just completely ignore her, pull the pillow over my head and roll back to sleep, but this wasn’t just any other morning. This morning was determined as the end of my childhood and the start of my collegiate career and, evidently, the rest of my life. The sound of my mother’s voice filled me with both a sense of melancholy and excitement. I was about to leave everything that I had ever known behind and strike out on my own. The events of this day had been played out over and over again in my mind for months now, but little did I know that things rarely happen how you expect them to. Being the first to arrive at the dorm means getting the pick of the litter in regards to which bed I wanted. I chose the one by the window. That first day of college was nothing more than an exhausting blur. Everything I experienced was completely new; every building, every face, every name. I didn’t know anybody, and by the end of the day I could barely even remember my own name, let alone the names of the people I was supposed to...

...On July 13, I decided to return to Merced College after not attending school for some time. Going back to school was a big decision that I thought about for the last two semesters. I always seem to have a lot going on and it was just something that crossed through my mind from time to time. I never imagined I could find a way to make it happen until the day I decided that I needed to go back to college. Upon enrolling in school, I have experienced college-related stress while registering, financing my education, and enrolling in classes. In the summer of 2014, I was looking at the college website attempting to figure out the process for registering at Merced College. While looking at the website, I could not find the assessment testing schedule. I knew previously I had seen the schedule online, but I couldn’t find it this time. It was a mistake to assume that the college was not offering assessment testing during the summer. A professor from Merced College checked into the motel where I work. She stated she needed time away from home to grade papers. I started to talk to her and mentioned to her I wanted to attend college, but I could not find the assessment dates. She advised me to start the registration process then go to the college and I could find out the dates from there. She then encouraged me by saying I was making an excellent decision to return to school and wished me the best of luck. That night I registered for Merced College through the website. I was notified upon...

...As a First Generation college student I believe it is very important to have more than one good trait with you to succeed but if I had to choose one I would say grit. Now, there are five main characteristics of grit which include: Courage, conscientiousness, long-term goals and endurance, resilience, and excellence. I believe I show courage every day especially as a first generation college student, from the day I moved out of the comfort of my home to live in a dormitory full of strangers to the day of my first midterm where I faced the fear of failure. I highly exemplify conscientiousness, being away from a supervising adult such as my parents obviously gave me a sense of freedom but I’m careful with it, I try to not abuse it too much that...

For example, going into college I figured that there was going to be a very large amount of homework in comparison to high school. I was definitely correct about this. In high school, it was not too difficult to get by with minimal effort and attention paid in class. However, my first week at Ole Miss showed me that college indeed does require much effort and actually doing the readings from the textbook that you are assigned. I do not have a problem with doing my homework, it is just something that I have observed and expected before I started college. There are many things about college that were not at all surprising to...

...My education goals is to be able to do well in my college classes, getting into the Nursing Honors Scholar Program and graduate from college. Hunter College is a very good fit for me because the school offers many programs and clubs to keep me interested. While attending the accepted students day, I felt happy in the environment. There was a very nice atmosphere. Everyone was so friendly and I saw many different types of programs and clubs that was provided there. When I attended a session, I heard the speaker say that the school offers variety of programs and clubs, there is no way you can feel like an outsider in the school. When I heard that statement, I felt happy and knew that I will be able to fit in. During my first year of high school....

It requires a lot more critical thinking than a Bachelors degree program and you have to be prepared to put in the effort. There are some concepts that were discussed in the Lecture and Research Update that will help me to complete my graduate program; three of which are: setting goals and completing tasks, systematically working through the coursework and using the APA (American Psychological Association) format for presenting work completed. The Masters Program at Ashworth College is self-paced with no deadlines but it has a syllabus so it is easy to follow. Having no deadlines may lead to procrastination; therefore it is imperative that I manage my time to complete my studies. I would schedule blocks of regular study time by using a calendar and trying to follow it. As with all plans; occasionally other situations arise that will force me to readjust my schedule. Instead of making up the time lost I will just continue from where I left off with my new schedule. The activities given for me to complete my lessons may be too much to do at any one time, so I will break them down...

...consistent is my belief. I came to the United States in 2003 to acquire my college education. It has been a long journey since I arrived to this country. It is on my recollection the day I left Ecuador, my family and my friends looking for new challenge that I really want to succeed. At the beginning of this journey everything looks so difficult and there were a lot of barriers on the road. I recognized it that if I want to succeed in this country I need to learn how to speak and write in English to be able to effectively communicate with others in this country. Moreover, I need to improve my listening skills to have a better understanding of the English speakers. In my college Education I was able to complete my 2-year college degree and I got my BA in Marketing by following my belief. Working hard and be consistent took me to the next level in college Education. In my professional career I always follow the identical belief. I remembered my first interview with my first boss. He asked me about my strengths and weaknesses in the interview. I remembered I was so nervous because it was my first job interview in this country. Moreover, I really need to get this job to start getting job experience for the near future. I answered that my strengths are that I work really hard and I am extremely consistent in any task that I am in charge. It was a really good interview and I left thinking that I will get this job. In effect, I got this position because I gained my boss trust...

...school, I was always told to go to college. But no one really gets into the details of all the paperwork before college, the reality check of cost of tuition, books, fees, the competition for programs, hours spent during homework, etc. All I knew was that college cost money, that I didn’t have, so I figure getting a job, working, and save up some money. As a young adult with no real responsibility, no car bills, cheap rent, no credit card or loan debt, a decent day to day job would seem like some real money for a just graduated, first job young adult. Well that’s what I thought at least. Sounds simple enough but now I know that without the right support and guidance, my life would’ve remained the same. Day to day job, just barely getting by. That’s what turned into “my after high school plans.” Work and save a little money here and there for college. That work turned into waiting tables at restaurants. At any new place it can be intimidating, being the new person. But as everyone gets to know each other, you connect with people you share common interest with. The wife's talk about their kids or their husbands. The party goers plan the next...
