I met Paula over 40 years ago; what was to be just a simple introduction was everything but; this introduction evolved into a lasting relationship which quickly became a sister bond. Paula’s gentle and fun nature made it easy for my entire family to adopt her as one of our big sisters.
As Paula and I continued to be friends we have enjoyed many life impacting experiences. Our children were born around the same time and grew up together. When my son, who was bright, yet was failing in third grade; it was Paula who discovered that his challenges were due to dyslexia. Without charges, Paula tutored my son and the school year ended with him being the most improved student in his class.
My children and I spent many weekends at the Parks, Zoo and other amusement venues with Paula and her family alone with many of her students over the years. She often spent her own money on clothes as well as school supplies for many of her students. There were times when food purchases were made for the families of these children.
Most of these children were from disadvantaged situations and without her intervention most likely would never have enjoyed these experiences. I believe Paula’s acts of kindness, sharing and caring went beyond her duties and responsibilities as a teacher, and is the result of some of these children going on to becoming teachers and other responsible adults. Paula continues to hear from many of her students today who are adults with their own families..
Paula is one of the most caring and giving persons I know, not just because she is my friend, but because it’s one of her distinguishing character

Memoir

...woke up to my alarm at 6:15 and clicked the snooze button until it was just about at seven in the morning .Always pushing myself to rush my morning. This morning instead of riding the bus like I usually did, I had convinced my father to drive me to school to drop me off along with my bike. A group of four friends and I planned on biking after school to my friend Joe’s house to stay the night, as well as a couple other things for the day. Before I had gotten down the stairs and to the truck my father had already thrown my bike in the trunk of our F-150. When we reached the school, I was grabbing my bag. While my father was pulling the bike out of the truck. My father walked me over to the bike rack, along with my bike and he chained it up for me. After that I told him I loved him. Just like what most people say to there parent before they leave. He left for work and I went about the usual last day of school the pointless saying goodbye to friends and teachers we would most likely not see during our summer. Signing every ones year books, the thing I never bothered to ask my dad to buy me. Sense it was the last day of school it was a half day. I would not be pointlessly stuck at school for a full day. School had just finally ended and it was still only eleven. It still hasn't even reached lunch yet. I had the whole day with my friends, I was excited. Joe told us he wanted to show us someplace cool. I walked over to the bike rack heading over to meet up with my four friends Joe, Jared...

Organ Donation

...Pro’s and con’s of organ donation -Theis TEXT 1: We must change the organ donation system – An article written by Denis Campbell, published in The Guardian News. The narrator Denis Campbell stays very neutral to the issue throughout the whole article and he only seems interested in knowing other peoples opinion. As a result of such he interviewed two different persons and had their opinion on the matter. Sir Liam Donaldson, the chief medical officer in England – States that he wants the current system switched in the UK. He, among many people in the UK thinks change is overdue. The current system for organ donation in the UK have an opt-in system that only allows retrieving of organs from citizens who either have a donor card or are signed up in the Organ Donor Register. He would like the whole policy of organ donation to change into what’s known as presumed consent which allows the retrieving of organs from all citizens after their death that haven’t already, before death, refused permission for that to happen. His argument for the system change lies within the massive organs that are wasted. The organs of all the citizens who haven’t got a donor card or are registered for donation will be wasted because they simply didn’t care about organ donation. By changing the system no dead citizen or his/hers family will get upset and organ donation will be possible for a way larger group than now. Natalie Sillince – Explains how the current system forced a very unpleasant and...

This discussion is going to center on one of these issues, providing a sample case. It will also present motivational and leadership theories that can be utilized to handle said issue. ...2, 1942. At age 3 her father “disappeared” and Barrios was forced to take on the role of mother and father. So she chose to relocate with her three children to Chile. This would be the first of many “homes” for Allende. In fact, she moves so much during an interview she stated, “I have been a foreigner all my life” (Sethi). However, the decision to constantly relocate was not always voluntary but rather necessary. For instance, in 1973 when she was contracted by a military coup, that had brought Augusto Pinochet to power, to help people who were on the wanted list escape. This ceased when Allende discovered her name on the list at which point she decided to flee to Venezuela where she held residence for 13 years. Even though some of her travels hold unpleasant memories one that brought her much joy was her trip to California in 1988. Here she met her second husband Willie Gordon. Allende’s first marriage was to Miguel Frias with whom she had two children Paula and Nicolas. Her daughter Paula was actually one of the main characters in a novel Allende wrote titled, Paula. The novel Paula is similar to The House of the Spirits both of which are letters to loved ones. Paula had fallen victim to Porphyria which caused her to slip into a coma from which she never awoke. The letters were...

Organ Donation

...Organ Donation 1. ”I’m donating my kidney to a stranger” is an article written by journalist Richard Wilson in 2008. The article is about Paula MacKinnon, who is thought to be the first altruistic organ donor in Scotland. Paula’s mother, Katherine, suffered kidney failure in 2007, and Paula wanted to donate her kidney to her mother. However their blood groups weren’t compatible, so Paula decided to donate her kidney anyway, to whoever might need it. Neither of Paula’s parents was particularly fond of this idea, but Paula is the kind of person, who will help anyone in need. Paula’s husband, Colin, understands why she is donating her kidney. They are both BBC journalists and highly involved in charity. Colin worked on a programme about orphaned children in Ukraine in 2006, and Paula went there to help for three months. 2. The first text, “We must change the organ donation system” by Denis Campbell, describes (as the title implies) how Britain needs an update of their organ donation system. Three people die in Britain every day, due to shortage of organs, so his solution would be to adopt the “presumed content” system, just like many other European countries have done. The presumed content system allows surgeons to retrieve the organs of a dead citizen, unless said citizen has already refused permission for them to do so, or if their family members object. The second text, “The Ethics of Organ Donation by Living Donors” by Robert D. Truog, describes three categories...

Advantages Beyond the Fundraisers

...there who did not have any friends. Then I met Paula Scott, a mom years older than myself who recognized I was desperate to fill a void in my life, and she knew I could help fill a need for our local PTA. Soon, I was eager to work with the organization to meet the goals of helping our local school district. Sure, I helped raise money, but it was not all about the money. Even though the PTA is viewed by many Americans as a fundraiser organization to support the needs of the local school districts helping, I’ve found my time in the PTA just as important to my personal development. I, like so many Americans, viewed the PTA as a Fund raising organization. I have many fond memories of my school days seeing my own mother in the halls of our elementary school on holiday party days, school field trips or just seeing her get dressed up to go attend one of our local PTA meetings. My understanding of what the PTA was implanted from memories of moms holding the monthly meetings, fundraisers or school holiday parties but never seeing behind the scenes of what the back bone of the association provides our schools and families across America. Like parents from generations before me, I joined my local PTA to build friendships in the school district. When my children were of school age, we moved into a small close knit community. As the new young mom in the community, I needed to make a way to establish friends and a local support for group for my family. Outside of my small church family, I was...

...Henry Larsen, the director of engineering, called Gary into his office. Henry Larsen : “Gary, I just heard that Space Technology will be putting out an RFP for Orion Shield by the end of this month with a thirty-day response time. I've been waiting a long time for this to come along so I can experiment with some ideas of my own. This is going to be my baby all the way, and I want you to head up the proposal team. It has to be an engineer. I'll make sure that you get a good proposal manager. If we start working now, we can get close to two months of research in. That'll give us a month's edge on everyone else”. **Gary was pleased to be involved in such an effort. He had no trouble getting functional support for the R&D effort necessary to put together a technical proposal. All of the functional managers continually remarked to Gary "This must be a biggy. The director of engineering has thrown all of his support behind you." On December 2, the RFP was received. Gary identified one trouble area. The technical specifications stated that all components must be able to operate normally and successfully through a temperature range of -65 degrees F to 145 degrees F . Current testing indicated the Scientific Engineering Corporation design would not function above 130 degrees F. An intensive R&D effort was conducted over the next three weeks. Everywhere Gary looked, it appeared that the entire organization was working on his technical proposal. Gary and Henry Larsen met a week...

She says that facebook itself is not a problem, and that actually it is a good way of sharing your life events with your friends but when you start to loose sleep over facebook or you spend more than an hour on there a day, that is some of the factors of addiction. The text continues to discuss other factors of facebook addictions. b) Text number one talks of how social networking is a way of grouping individuals who enjoy the same interest. This is one thing that the internet is good for, meeting new people who we can share information with and in that way connect over similar interest and ideas. ...10 Things Happy People Do Differently 10 strategies happy people incorporate into their lives Published on October 16, 2012 by Paula Davis-Laack, J.D., M.A.P.P. in Pressure Proof Happiness is having a large, caring, close-knit family in another city. George Burns How happy are you and why? This is a question I spend a fair amount of time thinking about, not only as it applies to my own levels of happiness, but also as it applies to my family, friends, and the people who I work with. Since graduating with my master’s degree in positive psychology, I’ve worked with and observed thousands of people in a wide variety of settings, and happy people just flow with the groove of life in a unique way. Here is what they do differently: 1) They build a strong social fabric. Happy people stay connected to their families, neighbors, places of worship, and communities. These strong connections act as a buffer to depression and create strong, meaningful connections. The rate of depression has increased dramatically in the last 50-75 years. The World Health Organization predicts that by 2020, depression will be the second leading cause of mortality in the world, impacting nearly one-third of all adults (Murray & Lopez, 1996). While several forces are likely behind this increase, one of the most important factors may be the disconnection from people and their families and communities.
