The two articles “My girls and me” (Text C) and “Are You Trying to Rob Your Kids?” (Text D) are two different articles written in 2011. Text C, “My girls and me”, is an article from the well-known broadsheet newspaper The Guardian. It is an interview with Bernie Ecclestone (81) who has been in charge of Formula One, a championship with a series of international car races, for 30 years which has made him a fortune. On the other hand, text D is a post from the website of the National Fatherhood Initiative. This post is about a scene in which a father could find himself with his child. A clear example would already be the image used, in which the father disappointedly looks down to his two daughters wearing expensive gowns. After he had been asked about his eldest daughter’s reality show “Tamara Ecclestone: Billion Dollar Girl”, he says “with a despairing sigh” that he had watched one episode and “frowns at the memory of what he saw”. By describing him in such a negative way, the writer once again stresses on the theme of disappointment. He then goes on by stating that he had warned her daughter that “they” (the people who are responsible for the show business) were not going to let her “portray yourself really as you are” and that “there’ll be things you’d rather not show that they’ll show”. He then goes on by saying that “she believed the show was going to be about Tamara in normal life” and that “they pushed her into not being herself”. The writer worked in banking and so uses an analogy between time invested in the relationship and money invested in a bank account. A scene is used to describe a situation in which a father, who has not spent time with his child when it was younger, would find himself once the father does try to get closer to his child. In the scene, a father walks into the “First National Bank of Your 15-year-old Daughter’s Heart,” and wants to “make a big withdrawal fast!”. However the daughter then replies by saying that the account “does not appear to have sufficient balance to make a withdrawal”. The father then tries to explain that he had “been very busy working and stuff,” and asks whether he could make a withdrawal of his wife’s account. The daughter then says that this is not possible and in the end when the father begs her to make an exception, but the daughter says that “all you had to do was make consistent deposits. Even small ones would have been fine (...).” In other words, the writers general point is that a father who was not involved in building a solid foundation in the relationship with his child, can not then expect the child to like him. The example with the mother’s account was to show how the mother had invested her time in raising her children thus the children and her have a better relation with her. The father can obviously not
