...Excellence “Why College Education is Important to me” Many people, like me, question the importance of a college education. While attending high school I sought out a part time job. I thought being able to work at 15 was the greatest thing ever. I felt freedom, and I loved making my own money to do with as I pleased. After graduating high school, I decided to give college a chance. After a year I decided it was not something I was interested in. I wish I thought this through more thoroughly. I wish I knew then what I know now. It took me 11 years to realize how the real world worked. Without a college education you will be struggling to get to the top. Even working your way up, you will still not make what you could make with a college degree. This is when I knew something had to change. 11 years later, I decided that I needed to make a positive change for not just me, but, for my husband and my children. I do not want my children to see me struggle to try to make money, or hating my job. I finally asked myself, “Can I change myself for the better?” The answer to that question is, absolutely. What I realized is no one could tell me what to do or how to do it. I have to want to do it myself, in order to be successful. It may have taken some time for me to make the right decision but I feel confident in myself now. Continuing my education is one of the big goals I have in life, along with, being able to provide a good and fulfilling life for me and my family. ...

...by Austin Kleon. Both of these books are considered self improvement books and are meant to motivate the reader to reach for their greatest potential. However, the two books differ in their writing style as well as, advise on obtaining one’s greatest potential. For instance, “The talent code” was written in a more formal manner with a lot of scientific facts to back up the author’s suggestions on how to improve your skills to reach greatness. On the other hand, “How to steal like an artist” was written in an informal style and used unconventional ways to present information or, advise on reaching greatness. Although the two books had very different writing styles I was motivated by both authors to work harder to reach my greatest potential. These books have had positive implications on both my study skills and volleyball training. The first book I read “The Talent Code” looked at research and scientific evidence to explain why certain people or groups develop extreme greatness in a particular area, which Coyle called “hot beds”. Coyle spent years investigating top athletes, artist, as well as meeting with neuroscientist to explain the “hot bed” phenomena. Colye discovered three main objectives that the “hot beds” had in common. The first is deep practice, which is going back after a mistake has been made and correcting the mistake until it is perfect. The next objective was ignition which is to have a passion and love for what you are doing. Coyle’s final objective...

At this place of employment I had to work with a group of people to get the day to day task done. We we’re all required to assist students in the purchasing of textbooks and other school supplies they may have needed, we had to stock and do inventory, we had to do cash, credit, and financial aid transactions, we also had to move at a certain pace because the bookstore was at most times a fast pace environment so we had to be able to keep up with the work load. For the most part we we’re working under the supervision of different managers of the bookstore sometimes 1 or 2 of them in a day so we had to make sure that we made as little mistakes as possible. Organizational Culture Inventory The culture of the organization/unit is Constructive; this culture consists of four organizational culture styles which are Achievement, Self-actualizing, Humanistic-encouraging, and Affiliative. The constructive norms are cultural styles that promote satisfaction behaviors. The organizations primary style is Self-actualizing which has the greatest extension on the circumplex, the secondary style is Oppositional which has the second greatest extension on the circumplex, and the weakest style of the organization/unit is dependent. The meaning of these results show to me that although my organization is big on self development, taking on interesting activities, and gaining enjoyment...

...taking into consideration how personal responsibility directly correlates with college success it is important to consider the goal, getting to the degree. No one can do it for you; it is up to the individual student to succeed. Just as we personally may have made mistakes, in college we succeed by mistakes and learning to recognize what did not work and take corrective actions to ensure we do not repeat the same frustrations. Weaver (2003) says, “Put the blame wherever you choose. But, the fact is, in the end, you can delare, right now, at this moment, my past is gone; my past is finished; my past is done with forever . It is important to put behind us what did not work or poison one’s brain with habits from the past. Start today anew and do not imply old habits or bad behaviors. As Epstein (2005) said, managing and scheduling your time effectively is the greatest ingredient for personal success with online learning . Scheduling and setting reminders to fit into a busy lifestyle may mean the difference between an excellent grade and just a passing one. Life happens, role with the punches, recognize if a situation is an actual emergency or just a distraction is the key to responsible time management. We all need a break here and there, just do not procrastinate. As stated in the study "It's a Whole New World": A Qualitative Exploration of College Students' Definitions of and Strategies for College Success, it is especially difficult for students...

...paper I had to write. Certain factors were able to better assist me when writing, however nothing was ever enough to perfect my writing, or at least, diminish the hardships I experienced. Throughout this first semester of literature I have, of course, experienced problems with my writing, however I have learned to identify my own mistakes and am beginning to better comprehend how to fix these mistakes. During the beginning of this past Fall’s semester, I had lost my confidence in my writing abilities. With my loss of confidence as a writer, came a strong desire to never write again. Still, the consequences of my loss of confidence further extended into my life and effected my overall perception of all things literary. I had no desire to read, and if I somehow felt forced to read, I would pay hardly any attention to the content. This influenced my writing in negative ways. However, I was still unable to recognize or identify the exact mistakes or flaws within my writing. Initially I had sought out the mistakes, but eventually lost hope and felt that there was no way to correct my writing. My horrendous writing skills were set in stone…or at least I believed so at the time. It was not up until I received the shameful grade of a “D+” on my paper, “Following Faith”, that I could fully identify my problems as a writer. I had not been expecting an “A” on my paper- in which I argued that although many turn to God for comfort in desperate times, the wanderer from “The Wanderer” seemed...

...Personal Responsibility Essay During my research, I’ve discovered more strategies that students may use to cope with situations that are risky in that they present the possibility for failure and potential threats to self-esteem. (Cantor, Julie., Niedental, Langston, & Brower, Dec 1987) Anxiety and openly set low expectations may lead to performance shortfalls called defensive pessimism. (Cantor, Julie., Niedental, Langston, & Brower, Dec 1987) Students like me may use this strategy due to low expectations to cope with their anxiety so that it does not become devastating. There are many tools to attain successful measure towards personal responsibility. The first step is to define what it means to you individually, it allows for self-reflection to navigate the path to a successful future in life and your career. I believe personal responsibility is not giving excuses on why I’m not persevering through hard times. When I first attended college, I didn`t plan properly for any difficult tasks either in my personal life, school, or work. Instead of seeking help from reliable sources, I would give up and throw in the towel and stop believing in myself when specific tasks involves research that challenges me to go a level I’m not comfortable at. The good news is I turned to my family support because they are my driving force and motivation to accomplishing the goal of obtaining my degree due to the fact it will change our quality of life completely. Personal responsibility requires...

...Every time I wake and start a new day I think of the new opportunities for experiences and learning. An education serves an enormous purpose for everyone, while taking advantage of the experience. As a student, I would like to focus on my studies and set new goals for the future. My primary goal is to increase my GPA, and to accomplish this I will dedicate more time to my studies. I find that creating good objectives helps me stay focused. Setting up a scheduled time for studying and always asking questions when unsure of a particular problem is the route to success. There’s always an answer to every problem. Hence, I would like to take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself and not look back at the mistakes I have made. My greatest strength is not giving up when things look bad or take a wrong turn. I have come to the realization that without an education life can be bleak and with no purpose, and I have set out to make my education a priority in my life. My family has always been supportive of my decisions especially when it came to my education. In addition, my oldest sister has been the source of inspiration in my life. She is a single mother of two beautiful kids, and graduated with a BA in Business Management and managed to graduate with honors. Now, this is amazing! I cannot describe the joy I felt for her when she finally accomplished part of her dream. We all need people who inspire us to be better and achieve the best in life. Someday...

...Jennifer Croney Scholarship Applicant – Journalism Student – Idealistic Dreamer It’s hard to condense all of my goals, hopes, and dreams down into a simple, 1,000 word piece, but that what journalists do, so here goes: There are many things I seek to do in what will undoubtedly be a long and rewarding career as a journalist, but at the top of the list is this: I want to make an impact. Somehow, somewhere, I want to help Americans become more informed, more empathetic, and more involved, even if it’s just one person out there that happens to watch their nightly news program, pick up a paper, or catch the beginning of an episode of Frontline (all contenders on my big list of goals, hopes, and dreams). I want them to be affected by what I can make—to more understand the world around them, to discover a problem, or a solution, they hadn’t heard of before that moment. I have faith in the American people. We are stuck...

My mother is a pharmacist and at the time I looked up to her and she was (and still is) my hero and that was the reason why on the sheet of paper where we wrote what we were going to dress up as, I in my first grade chicken scratch handwriting wrote “farmasist” and showed up to school in a white coat and a bottle full of M&M candies resembling pills. Now so many years later I am hoping to accomplish my ultimate goal of becoming as pharmacist. Don't get me wrong, the path to deciding that Pharmacy is the career for me was not ultimately decided that day on career dress up day. Through out high school I excelled in math as well as science and knew I wanted to work in medicine and ultimately help people but I wasn't completely sure what that entailed. As my senior year approached an ending I decided to take a leap of faith and go to a school 500 hundred miles from my friends and family on a full ride scholarship. Here I realized that if...

...to attend graduate school and get my masters degree in Higher Education and Student affairs because it is a passion of mine that I plan to pursue professionally. During my undergraduate career I was an Electronic Media and Film major with an emphasis in Screenwriting and a minor is sociology and by the time that I realized I loved student affairs it was too late to switch. I was very involved during my undergraduate career. I started my time in college by participating in the freshman leadership camp, then I joined a sorority and it completely changed my life. My sorority taught me what it meant to be responsible for others, how to lead, and more importantly how to be my true self. Through leadership opportunities in my chapter I was able to become more involved in Panhellenic and eventually became the Panhellenic President. While President I was lucky enough to work with some of the greatest advisors and student affairs professionals. Their love for their work and their passion for their student’s success is what made me realize I wanted to be in that field. On my campus there was a shooting. During those terrifying hours directly after it happened, I saw all of these people who I admired and respected come together and make sure they had done anything and everything possible for their students. It was in that tragic moment that I decided to apply to graduate school. Their love for their work and their...

...11/12/13 It has always been my childhood dream to attain the highest education possible. Unfortunately, this dream has eluded me several times due to reasons beyond my control. Despite all the elusions and roadblocks I experienced on my journey to fulfill this dream, my determination and desire has never faltered. This is because I kept my eyes opened and focused on future. My parents separated when I was in 10th grade and things became very tough for me but I was able to graduate from grade school in Nigeria with the little help my mom could provide financially. Unfortunately things changed when I got to High School. Unlike Grade school, high school was not free of charge. Parents pay tuition and buy school materials. This was very difficult for my mom because I wasn’t the only child attending school. Three of my younger siblings were also in school and mom had no lucrative job. We all lived on an income ...

As I reflect on my work in your English 130 class, I am able to see much more clearly now just how much I have improved as a writer. I have learned to notice my strengths as well as my weaknesses and to learn from them. During the semester, I have engaged in peer edits which have helped me to realize some of weaknesses through reviewing other’s works and having my own works reviewed. My portfolio includes “Bermudas,” “The Tempest and Source Material,” “Heart of Darkness and Postcolonial Criticism,” my annotated bibliography for my research paper and my research paper....

...Personal Responsibility is linked to College Success Gen/200 July 1, 2013 Jeremy NeVille Personal Responsibility is linked to College Success As George Washington Carver said, “Ninety-nine percent of all failures come from people who have a habit of making excuses.” (LeadershipNow, n.d.). Although, people are naturally unable to take responsibility, college success is attainable when an individual accepted personal responsibility. With an early behavioral intervention set at a young age, academic success is easily adaptable and reachable. Continuing higher education such as attending college is an individual’s personal responsibility of choice. Higher Education offers a place for learning and practicing skills such as; setting goals, manage time, resolve conflicts, and learn new skills. Recognizing our potential can advance our ability to gain lifetime-acquired skill for success in college. Accepting personal responsibility is to own up to his or her mistakes. When an individual accepted personal responsibility of his or her actions, he or she takes full control of all the decision-making. Pointing fingers or making excuses for any circumstances are not a trait of an individual who takes personal responsibilities for his or her life. Acknowledging your own mistakes is an admirable trait of a responsible individual. In every family household there are different sets of values and approach on teaching their children personal responsibilities. These children are taught...

...MY LEADERSHIP STYLE "Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you Want done because he wants to do it.” - Dwight D. Eisenhower Eisenhower’s definition of leadership is veraciously on the mark. As educators, we work diligently to engage and motivate students so they want to: learn, read, think critically, create, collaborate, and ultimately become lifelong learners and leaders. This is no easy feat. Yet when a child begs for more reading time, dives enthusiastically into a research project, or makes a cross curriculum connection that genuinely excites them, I guarantee a teacher is smiling! Similarly, effective educational administrators purposefully and deliberately seek to create a climate and culture that promotes and perpetuates ongoing learning. My leadership style is Transactional leadership. Transactional Leadership, also known as managerial leadership, focuses on the role of supervision, organization, and group performance; transactional leadership is a style of leadership in which the leader promotes compliance of his/her followers through both rewards and punishments. This type of leader identifies the needs of their followers and gives rewards to satisfy those needs in exchange of certain level of performance. Transactional leaders focus on increasing the efficiency of established routines and procedures. They are more concerned with following existing rules than with making changes to the organization. A transactional leader establishes...
