Healthy People 2020 Case Study

...In recent decades, Healthy People 2020 has monitored the general health status of the United States (U.S.) population. The vision of Healthy People 2020 is “a society in which people live long, healthy lives (Unites States Department of Health and Human Services [HHS], Healthy People 2020 (2014).” Healthy People is a set of 10-year science-based objectives used to help improve the health of all Americans. The four goals of Healthy People 2020 are to: “Attain high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death; Achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups; Create social and physical environments that promote good health for all; and Promote quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors across all life stages. (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2014).” They believe that the quality of life and life expectancy can improve by developing and practicing healthy behaviors. As a Registered Nurse, I play a significant role in helping the population achieve the goals presented by Healthy People 2020. I strive to model positive healthy behaviors in my...

...of Healthy People 2020 as it applies to mental illness. Third, this paper will review my work place assessment for barriers for the care and treatment of mentally ill patients. Finally, this paper will review a short presentation I gave to co-workers in an effort to aid in better treatment for the mentally ill. Recent figures suggest that in 2004, approximately 1 in 4 adults in the United States had had a mental health disorder in the past year, most commonly anxiety or depression ("Healthy People 2020 ", n.d.).. It is estimated that only about 17% of U.S. adults are considered to be in a state of optimal mental health ("Healthy People 2020 ", n.d.). An estimated 26% of Americans age 18 and older are living with a mental health disorder in any given year, and 46% will have a mental health disorder over the course of their lifetime ("Healthy People 2020 ", n.d.). Mental health disorders often have a serious impact on physical health and are associated with the prevalence, progression, and outcome of some of today’s most pressing chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Mental health disorders can have harmful and long-lasting effects—including high psychosocial and economic costs. These effects apply not only for the people living with the disorder, but also for their families, schools, workplaces, and communities. For these reasons this population has been labeled by many as a vulnerable population for healthcare. So much so that Healthy People 2020 has...

Healthy People 2020

...The topic i'm choosing is the Healthy People 2020 goal for the pediatric nurses. I chose this topic since I am a pediatric nurse, I feel that I am in a great position to help parents and their kids prevent illnesses and be prepared for expected changes. The Healthy People 2020 have set goals for adolescents which are defined by the ages 10-19 years of age (Meadows-Oliver and Allen, 2012) and for early and middle childhood. The Healthy People goals are made to improve priorities and increase public awareness of determinants of health, disease, and disability; providing measurable goals and objectives to determine progress in attaining the health improvement priorities; engaging multiple sectors to improve practices based on evidence and knowledge; and identifying critical research, evaluation, and data collection (Meadows-Oliver and Allen, 2012). 11 objectives are set for adolescents this year. The objective that grabbed my interest was increasing the percentage of adolescents who have had wellness checks from 68.7% to 75.6% (Meadows-Oliver and Allen, 2012). That objective grabbed my interest because I feel like I can personally help meet that goal by educating my adolescent patients and their parents to receive a yearly check up with their doctor. The goals made for early and middle childhood is to increase the proportion of children who are ready for school in all five domains of healthy development: physical development, social-emotional development, approaches to learning...

Haelthy People 2020

...overall health status Equality in Access to health services is one of the forty two topic areas in Healthy People 2020 that caught my view as one of the objectives to have the highest importance in achieving a national goal of healthy Americans in the future. But what does access to health care actually means? According Gulliford et al (2002), facilitating access to health is concerned with helping people to command appropriate health care resources in order to preserve or improve their health status but unfortunately gaining access to healthcare depends on some factors such as financial, organizational and social or cultural barriers that permits or limit the said utilization of services. Therefore having much available health services is not a factor in itself to improve the quality of healthcare but the utilization of such services by all of the people which will depend on affordability and general accessibility of the service. According to Healthy People 2020 (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2012), it is important to have access to quality health care service in order to achieve equity in health and eventually improve the general health status of all Americans. This I think is one of the most important move that the state should make in order to make the vision of having healthy Americans, including all migrants, ethnic and minority groups, by the year 2020. Though free service is not always the key to have access to quality healthcare the state can definitely...

Schools and Nutrition

...In 2006 only 24 States had nutrition standards for food and beverages for children in pre-school. The goal by 2020 is to have 34 states with nutrition standards for foods and beverages. I believe it is important for states to have standards for nutrition and beverage when it comes to children eating in school settings. With America’s soaring rates of obesity, I think it’s important to teach children good eating habits at a young age. Healthy people 2020 talks about pre-schools maintaining consistent programs that follow the laws and regulations. The desired direction is to increase these standards from 24 states to 34 states. I believe that some states are lacking the development and planning of nutrition programs. Before reading into this topic on healthy people and seeing the statistic of only 26 states having a nutritional standard for pre-schools surprised me, I would of thought that all states would have some regulations and policies. I know some children are already obese before they enter pre-school and that is a challenge not only for the parents but also the teacher who is trying to promote healthy eating habits. I know when I was pre-school and grade school are snacks throughout the day weren’t as healthy as what my son’s snacks are today in pre-school. A lot of our snacks were sweet food and high in cholesterol. My son that’s in pre-school has lots of fruits and vegetables. In his case he’s a picky eater and won’t usually eat most of the fruits at home, but since he’s...

Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection

...Survey Summary and Reflection Windshield surveys are conducted to observe different aspects of a community. The information obtained from driving through the community allows the observer to gain a better understanding of the community including culture, housing, and signs of decay just to name a few. This paper focuses on the family I selected, the overall impression of the family’s community and environment, and my observations about cultural diversity and vulnerable populations within this community. Three aspects of the community that affect residents’ health and one Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicator that is relevant to the community are also explored. Community Community is defined as “a group of people, often living in a defined geographical area, who may share a common culture, values and norms, and are arranged in a social structure according to relationships which the community has developed over a period of time” (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012, p. 397). Community health focuses on a specific geographical area instead of concentrating on people with similar values and qualities. Community health nurses provide care that promotes the health and well-being of the community they serve. This fact encompasses the idea of community as a client. Oftentimes health related issues of individuals are similar to others in the community. By working with individuals, families and groups within a community, the nurse is providing care that will ultimately benefit the community...

Healthy People 2020 Objectives

...Identify a Healthy People 2020 objective applicable to a population or aggregate to which you, your family member, or your assessment community belongs, such as adult Asian women, urban African-American adult men, or teenage athletes. Do you think the objective is attainable? Why or why not? What can you do as a community health nurse to assist the United States in reaching this goal? In searching for objectives for young adult women, I came across a variety of pertinent objectives for the population. Specifically, I’m choosing to discuss objectives: C-18.2— Increase the proportion of women who were counseled by their providers about Pap tests; and HIV-17.1—Increase the proportion of sexually active unmarried females aged 15 to 44 years who use condoms (Healthy People 2020, 2013). I think these two go hand-in-hand when working to promote health for this population. In 2008, 59.8 percent of females between the ages of 21 and 65 were counseled by their providers about Pap tests (Healthy People 2020, 2013). Healthy People 2020 set a goal of a 10 percent improvement, hoping to achieve a targeted percentage of 65.8. Data collected by the Health Indicators Warehouse (2008) demonstrated that persons of younger age, who are unmarried, disclosed a lower percentage of counseling than that of older, married adults. This is significant to me!!! With the STD epidemic is feels that we have in this country, wouldn’t education be sterner for these types of populations? On the contrary...

Healthy People 2020

...PLANNING BETTER HEALTH FOR THE FUTURE Margaret Carriger Grand Canyon University Trends and Issues in Health Care HLT-418v Georgeana Lass Drew, Instructor July 12, 2014 In 2010, Healthy People 2020 was started by the Department of Human Health Services. Health programs and research topics were instituted to help Americans live healthier and longer lives (CDC, 2014). The 42 topics presented are all very important in maintaining the goals set by Healthy People 2020. If these programs were to be cut or budget restraints imposed on them, the impact would be felt by all Americans. There would be more unhealthy people, preventable chronic diseases would be more prevalent, and education and health associated programs would be affected. In reading the 42 topics, and after much consideration, I chose the 10 most important that I felt would be impacted. 1. Access to Health Services- The need for accessible health care is vital for the success of health equality and for expanding the well-being of a healthier life for Americans. 2. Cancer- Research and advancements in cancer treatment have seen a decrease in both occurrence and morbidity. Healthy People 2020 advocate the development in cancer research to assess the advances made in decreasing cancer in the United States. 3. Diabetes- One of the most prevalent chronic diseases in the United States. More than 57 million Americans have a high glucose reading or levels that can increase the chances of Diabetes Mellitus...

Culturally Sensitive Teaching Project for Nurses

...Angeles are at especially high risk. This high-risk minority population requires extra efforts on the part of providers to decrease the rate of diabetes and related complications. The focus of this project is to educate nurses about cultural competency, barriers that Hispanics face, and how to improve their quality of life by making a lifestyle change. Experience at the Workplace Working with Hispanic immigrants and Hispanic nationals at my facility has given me firsthand exposure to their struggles and barriers that they face in the healthcare system. Working with other nurses has exposed me to the sad reality that the majority of them lack cultural competency, sensitivity and understanding for this particular vulnerable group. In my experience, most of my co- workers view Hispanic clients as a burden to the system rather than as a person that needs support, understanding and guidance to overcome the health disparities and barriers they face in our healthcare system. During this project, I interviewed and shared with two of my co-workers a brochure I developed, designed to increase awareness about the vulnerability of Hispanics, based on their culture and illness. Concepts were covered about the importance of health literacy, culture and its influence on patient’s disease management, barriers that they face, and techniques that ultimately motivate clients to make a lifestyle change. The risk for Hispanics in the United States to develop type 2 diabetes is twice...

I believe that this is evident in day to day life, from having a ‘gym buddy’ to posting how far you ran on a social media network, we all want to have our peers support us in our healthy living. Community Survey

...Community and Public Health Reflection Marcia La Bruyere NUR/405 March 11, 2013 Michelle Hogsed Community and Public Health Reflection Public health nurses integrate community involvement and knowledge about the entire population with personal, clinical understanding of the health and illness experience of individuals and families within the population. They translate and articulate the health and illness experiences of diverse often vulnerable individuals and families in the population to health planners and policy makers, and assist members of the community to voice their problems and aspirations. Public health nurses are knowledgeable about multiple strategies for intervention, from those applicable to the entire population, to those for the family, and the individual. Public health nurses translate knowledge from the health and social sciences to individuals and population groups through targeted interventions, programs, and advocacy (APHA, 2013). The community creates public health programs to reduce disparities in health care access, quality and health outcomes. They are designed to build capacity from within the community to enhance and sustain community health and wellness. Program services include cultural and language appropriate services for the population in their care. The community helps to ensure that vulnerable populations, with or without insurance, have timely and appropriate access to needed care. Some of the programs operate as independent non-profit...

Vulnerable Populations in the Workplace

...minorities,” for Healthy People 2010 (Crist, 2002). 2010 has come and gone, and although there have been improvements that goal continues to be in place for Healthy People 2020. Some vulnerable populations are still at risk and face many barriers preventing them access to proper healthcare. Attempting to overcome these barriers will often fall on the shoulders of healthcare providers; it becomes their job to help decrease the overall health disparity suffered by vulnerable populations. In this paper the subject to discuss is the vulnerable Mexican American population and will evaluate barriers faced by them as well as barriers faced by healthcare workers, and the methods that could be used in order to help decrease current health disparities. Mexican-Americans: A Population at Risk Mexican-Americans, especially aging Mexican-Americans are an extremely vulnerable population. Currently, Hispanics are the fastest growing ethnic population in the United States and as of the 2003 U.S. Census, their population, “grew at a rate almost fourfold that of the general population—13% vs. 3.3%--over a 39 month period” (Keating, et al. 2009). That being said, non-English-speaking immigrants are often socially and economically disadvantaged, which impacts health disparities (Keating, et al. 2009). Barriers to Care There are many barriers that are working against the current attempts to decrease health disparities. One of these barriers is the fact that many Mexican-American people cannot afford...

Community Health Reflection

...nursing is a specialty field of nursing which care is provided to people in the community setting. A community health nurse can provide care to children and the adult population. As a result of the economic depression, more people in the community are becoming jobless, homeless, low-income, and uninsured. So the need for community health nurses has drastically increased. The child community health nurses’ role is concentrating on health promotion and prevention strategies. According to Contemporary Nurse Journal (2011), “the role is broaden to include multifaceted case management, home visiting, outreach programs, early identification and primary intervention of clients with psychosocial and mental health issues, group facilitation, the traditional one to one client contact and multidisciplinary team function (p. 72). The role for a community nurse in the adult setting is to prevent health problems in at risk individuals, promote disease prevention strategies, to provide care and available resources to needy individuals and families in the community. According to Stanhope and Lancaster (2012), “community health nursing practice is the synthesis of nursing theory and public health theory applied to promoting, preserving, and maintaining the health of populations through the delivery of personal health care services to individuals, families, and groups (p. 16). Nursing diagnosis & interventions People in the community are at risk for many different health problems and...
