Personal Narrative: My Congenital Heart Defect

...born two weeks past my due date and had some issues early in my life that caused a few hospitalizations. My doctors now believe that my condition could have been identified much sooner. When I was just two weeks old, my mother took me to the doctor due to my hands and feet turning blue during certain times and her concern was that something was not right. I was treated several times for symptoms of pneumonia which with the help of my medical research, I now realize it could have been indicative lack of oxygen due to my undiagnosed heart condition. There were many signs during my youth that were indicative of my heart condition that could have been treated differently if the doctors had looked into it. I was always small in stature, I have several eye and vascular issues that were affected by the lack of oxygen, I always worked extra hard within athletics and was very slow to improve. My doctors and I now believe all of these issues could have been much less significant should my Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) have been discovered and repaired early in my life. A simple pulse oximetry test at my birth may have picked up my condition and proper treatment delivered but back in 1999 when I was born that test was not standard procedure after birth at the hospital in which I was born. Similar stories to mine are more common than...

Can I Live Without My Heart?

...The heart is an organ that, together with the veins and arteries makes up the cardiovascular system. Being a muscular organ that pumps blood through a network of veins and arteries, the various bodily tissues are supplied with oxygenated blood (WebMD, 2009). Being located behind the sternum and between the lungs, the heart must be protected at all times as it is an important organ (Bianco, 2013). While you sleep, while you are awake sitting down or exercising, the heart never stops beating. Specifically designed chambers and valves contribute to the effectiveness of the cardiovascular system and the action of heat beats and contractions that pump blood around the body. Close to the heart is the Sinoatrial node, which generates electrical impulses that triggers the heart to contract, forcing blood out, and upon relaxing, allowing blood to pour in (Laizzo, 2010). As the human body needs a supply of oxygen, and the only way to get it is via enriched blood, the human body is not able to live without the heart you are born with. That being said, there have been medical advancements achieved which enables the survival of a patient who has suffered a severe cardiac event. Many of these techniques are only temporary until a more stable decision can be made (Heart Foundation, 2013). Cardiopulmonary Bypass is used for taking over the lungs and heart of a patient having cardiothoracic surgery. Cardiopulmonary Bypass works to oxygenate the blood and pump it around the body...

Lying

...Lies lies and more lies 10/13/2014 The screeching of the lie hurts my ear. My biggest fear is now standing in the clear. With his bold face and nice smile Whispering to me, telling me you care when I know you don’t Crushing my inside by all the lies you told Lies lies and more lies I see you coming. I can smell you from a mile away, I know your enticing sweet scent because it’s something I use to wear. I used to hug and hold you, breathe you and feel you Your lying consumes me, it is now a part of me Those bitter-sweet lies on my tongue, leaves me so numb. Lies lies and more lies I’m young and confounded, still telling lies and just can’t rewind it. Just can’t stand it sometimes bursting to come out, clouding my vision with doubt. Lies lies and more lies Trust issues were the tissues he left behind. I know healing takes time and I’m fine with that, as a matter of fact, I can toast to that. Don’t cover me with a lie, it’s a blanket I don’t need. Lies lies and more lies We reap what we sow, trust me I should know. I told so many lies it’s now a constant shadow What began as one, turned into a few. Like a speeding train on an endless track, the first lie was impossible to retract. His lies caressed my mind, harden my heart, changed my soul, lying has taken its toll. Watch what you say and say what you mean. Lying has a need only the week can feed. Lies lies and more lies...

My Catcher in the Rye

...What does it mean to grow up? To Holden, of The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger, growing up means having to lose your freedom and becoming ‘phony’. J.D. Salinger also explores other aspects on what it means to grow up, including the many trails one must go through in order to become an ‘adult’. Although Holden explores the idea of growing up, he doesn’t actually change throughout the novel. The Catcher In The Rye is a tragic hero novel because Holden never actually changes even though he has plenty of opportunities to do so, he remains stubborn to his cause of not maturing and letting himself fail at yet another thing. Holden has lost all of his ambitions, he has flunked four out of his five courses. This is the next in the long line of schools that Holden has been flunked out of. But even though Holden has flunked so any ties, it is not intelligence that he lacks but the motivation. He in fact is very intelligent, but doesn't apply himself because he doesn't want to. By doing this he disappoints his family and his teachers who all know that he could be very successful. The fact that his teachers believe in him in shown when Holden visits Mr. Antolini. Mr. Antolini he states to Holden, “I think that one of these days, you’re going to have to find out where you want to go. And then you’ve got to start going there. But immediately. You can’t afford to lose a minute. Not you.” (Lines 29-33, Page 188) This illustrates that he truly believes that Holden has a bright future ahead...

My Hometown Is Still in My Heart

...inimitable place to be, besides in my husband’s arms, is Harrogate, Tennessee. The rolling hills, clean crisp air, and spaciousness all surpass the city life. The memories and joy I experience when I am there will always have a special place in my heart. My house resided in the country. A cow field was my backyard, and I would play hide and seek with my friends behind the hay bales. From the moment we got home and put our Bratz Doll backpacks down until the moment the pinkish, yellow sun was setting, my friends and I were always in a new adventure. At times, the golden rays would shine and radiate without a cloud in the sky. The gentle breeze was just enough to make it comfortable. The grass had already dried from the early morning dew, making it look freshly cut and greener than ever. As we would run around making up games to play, my black and white English Springer Spaniel, otherwise known as Bubba, would follow us eagerly with his wet teeming tongue hanging out of his parched mouth and his tail wagging like a hammer in an ongoing alarm clock. In Knoxville, the population and space is far too crowded to enjoy pleasures like those in Harrogate. In a way, it is suffocating here, and I miss the feeling of peace and contentment when at home. During winter season, it would snow fervently. My yard also consisted of a rather giant slope. Due to many hills and back roads that would get black ice very easily, school was called off frequently. My friends and I would get so...

The Frankllins Tale

...THE FRANKLIN'S PROLOGUE These ancient gentle Bretons, in their days, Of divers high adventures made great lays And rhymed them in their primal Breton tongue, The which lays to their instruments they sung, Or else recited them where joy might be; And one of them have I in memory, Which I shall gladly tell you, as I can. But, sirs, because I am an ignorant man, At my beginning must I first beseech You will excuse me for my vulgar speech; I never studied rhetoric, that's certain; That which I say, it must be bare and plain. I never slept on Mount Parnassus, no, Nor studied Marcus Tullius Cicero. Colours I know not, there's no doubt indeed, Save colours such as grow within the mead, Or such as men achieve with dye or paint. Colours of rhetoric I find but quaint; My spirit doesn't feel the beauty there. But if you wish, my story you shall hear." THE FRANKLIN'S TALE In old Armorica, now Brittany, There was a knight that loved and strove, did he To serve a lady in the highest wise; And many a labour, many a great emprise He wrought for her, or ever she was won. For she was of the fairest under sun, And therewithal come of so high kindred That scarcely could this noble knight, for dread, Tell her his woe, his pain, and his distress. But at the last she, for his worthiness, And specially for his meek obedience, Had so much pity that, in consequence, She secretly was come to his accord To take him for her husband and her...

...I let it fall, my heart, And as it fell you rose to claim it It was dark and I was over Until you kissed my lips and you saved me My hands, they're strong But my knees were far too weak, To stand in your arms Without falling to your feet But there's a side to you That I never knew, never knew. All the things you'd say They were never true, never true, And the games you play You would always win, always win. [Chorus:] But I set fire to the rain, Watched it pour as I touched your face, Well, it burned while I cried 'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name! When I lay with you I could stay there Close my eyes Feel you here forever You and me together Nothing is better 'Cause there's a side to you That I never knew, never knew, All the things you'd say, They were never true, never true, And the games you play You would always win, always win. [Chorus:] But I set fire to the rain, Watched it pour as I touched your face, Well, it burned while I cried 'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name! I set fire to the rain And I threw us into the flames Where it felt something die 'Cause I knew that that was the last time, the last time! Sometimes I wake up by the door, That heart you caught must be waiting for you Even now when we're already over I can't help myself from looking for you. Last Leaf

...I here, exactly?‖ queried my nineteen-year-old niece as she sat next to me. The lantern I had placed beside us cast flickering light throughout the abandoned tannery‘s darkened interior. Eerie, dust-laden cobwebs clung to every wooden beam, workbench and table, causing her to shudder. I glanced at her innocent face untouched by grief, and wished yet again that I had been born in her day rather than mine. ―For emotional support.‖ ―Then I‘m not in any danger, Aunt Margryte?‖ she asked unsurely. ―Of course not, Geruscha,‖ I said while smoothing down a ruffle in my threadbare black mourning dress. ―Do you know who owns this place?‖ ―I used to. Well, I guess I still do.‖ Memories of better days from decades past superimposed themselves over broken chairs and dilapidated benches. I bit my lip to keep deep inner pain at bay. ―So why don‘t you sell it? Seems structurally intact; surely there‘s a tanner who would buy it from you?‖ ―You ask a lot of questions, Geruscha,‖ I protested. ―You did ask me to come tonight,‖ she pouted. ―So I did. I keep this place because it suits my purposes on the odd occasion, such as tonight,‖ I answered after a moment. Geruscha‘s next question died on her lips when the front door swept open to admit a badly scarred man dressed in the garb of a common mercenary. I laid a hand on her forearm to reassure her. Aged wooden floorboards groaned under unaccustomed weight as the man approached us. Cold eyes met mine, and then studied my niece as though she was a horse...

Why Amy Owns My Heart

...aka owner of my heart, I find it difficult to come up with the words to describe how much I miss you and how lonely the world has become without you in it.
