The Inspiration behind my Motivation

My Opa was a Russian Romeo who fell madly in love with my Oma, his German Juliet. This love they shared was strictly forbidden, since Russia and Germany were not on good terms. Had they gotten caught there would have been serious repercussions. I wouldn't even exist and would lack the ability to tell you this story. Nevertheless, they were married and raised three children together in Germany.

When my mother was 20 years old when she decided to move to the United States and attend college. This is where she met and married my father. but once she became pregnant she returned to Germany.

My Opa passed away two days before I was born and even though I never got to meet him, I am proud to be his granddaughter. When I was approximately six weeks old my mother flew back to the states and reunited with my father. I was raised in the swampy state of Louisiana until my 14th birthday. My present was a one-way ticket to Neufarhn, Germany where I was to meet and live with my Oma. It was over the next 3.5 years that I had the privilege of getting to know my Oma, the woman that continues to inspire me to this day.

A few days after my arrival, my Oma showed me a photo that she had taken during WWII. In the photo was Adolf Hitler, Dr. Josef Mengele and various Nazi Generals, laughing and smiling while eating dinner in our family restaurant, which is still in business. They were seated at a large round table with a miniature christmas tree as the centerpiece. She tells me that, unbeknownst to the Nazi’s, there was a Jewish family hiding beneath them, in the basement.

Tears fell down her face as she spoke about how terrified she was of being caught as she would sneak them food and water. Listening to her stories of war, poverty, and struggle, I didn’t realize I was crying until I felt her arms embrace me and squeeze tightly , while she kissed my tears away and hummed her favorite tune.

A few days later my Oma shows me another photo taken during WWII. Two young boys stood with a young girl between them. All three of their expressions were solemn and they were dressed head to toe in Nazi uniform. She tells me the photo is of her when she was my age (14) and the boy on her left was her identical twin, while the boy on the right was their older brother by two years. The boys were forced to participate in the Nazi Youth Unit because during that the war membership to a youth program was made compulsory. Sadly, they were both killed in combat.

It wasn’t until I got older that I was able to fully understand what my Oma endured. Although I know very few details about her younger years, I do know that she overcame so much in her lifetime. I also know she contained enormous amounts of strength, knowledge, and courage to have survived the realities of warfare as a teenage girl. Such qualities are rare in the world today and I am proud to say that my Oma was one of the wisest, most courageous people to have ever existed.

Her ability to keep her head held high no matter how negative the circumstances has always encouraged me. She was always so understanding and gave the best advice. She was such a hard worker and even helped to support her family long before the feminist movement made this a common occurrence. She motivates me to be a better person and to make the most of my life. Every thing she did was done with style, class, and grace. She was the true definition of Elegance. She taught me that when times get hard and there is no where to turn, to trust my inner strength and it will always prevail.

Overall, she taught me what it means to BE a woman and how to enact my strength and femininity. I certainly would not be the person I am today, inside or out, without the influence of my Oma upon my life. I can only aspire to imitate her stability, her work ethic, and her refusal to be silenced by other people's disapproval. To do things out of the kindness of my heart without any expectation or personal gain.

I never spoke to her of my appreciation and admiration, I just assumed she knew how I felt. Unfortunately, she passed away a few moths ago and I will never have the opportunity to thank her. My mother assures me that Oma is watching over me and lives in my heart always. I like to believe this since it comforts me. “Oma, if your listening, I love you and thank you for all the good advice you gave me, every hug, each kiss I can still feel on my face and all the good morals and values you taught me. I hope to meet you again one day in Heaven.”

My Teacher, My Hero

...“My Teacher, My Hero” "No one saves us but we ourselves-no one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path, teachers merely show the way." Gone were the days when we spent our late nights indulging in comic books featuring our generation’s greatest heroes, sneaking past our bedtime to read Superman’s latest issue under the sheets while holding a flashlight, running around the house with our fists in the air and a cape zooming through our backs. Nowadays, all we have our noses stuck on are the not-so-thrilling sagas of Captain Algebra on Planet Geometry, Fantastic Physics and Heinous History, much to our dismay. I never looked forward to closing in on my childhood and waking up to Algebra class in my first year of high school, nor did I find excitement in the then 25-year old Mr. Ongleo who came to class everyday to blab about my least-liked subject ever. He was a new teacher at the Caloocan City Science High School, and being a former disciplinarian in my best friend’s school at St. Mary’s Academy, he daily greeted us with Spartan orders. “Stand straight! Chin up! Hands on the side!” When the door opens to give way for him we had to be in this position already—mouths zipped and bodies stiff as a board. On some accounts he’d add “Be proud of yourself.”, and that would somehow make the corners of our lips slightly curl upward. He’d then check our room’s sanitation, and make remarks concerning it. He hated noise and dirt, and was highly irritated by even tiny pieces of...

...A hero to me is one of not the most startling qualities, but one of qualities that can be a person or their surroundings better. Most people look up to those of the most mesmerizing or eye grasping backgrounds. But, are those people really making change. See, my whole idea of me truly looking up to someone to call them my Hero is for them to show me that wholeheartedly desire to be that person, to be the change they want to see in the world, to be that difference maker. Although in some ways Hero must come from the noble background or birth and have a epic story to tell. The simplistic definition of a hero is one of noble qualities, and that is all I take from a Hero. To be a Hero you must take from what you have not done, not what you have come from. What you do in the moment as a good person will...

Definition Essay On My Hero

...selfless. Every person has their own hero. However heroes are meaningful in different ways. For example, some may say Superman is a hero. He always seems to swoop in at the right moment and save the day. Others believe pizza delivery guys are heroes. They drive to you so you don’t have to get up and get your pizza yourself. Whoever your hero is, they are your hero because they mean something to you, even though they may mean nothing to someone else. To me, my hero doesn’t have super-human strength, or hypersonic speed. My hero is someone quite ordinary, someone you might see on an everyday basis. She may seem like an average working person, but she is so much more to me. It’s in the little things she does like getting up everyday to go to work even though she knows she has to fight the same make-up-battle with the same three girls, knowing she has to face those horrible seventh grade boys, knowing she has to deal with the kids who give her absolutely no respect, knowing she has to put up with pesky eighth grade know-it-alls, and yes, even me....

Determination: My Definition Of A Hero

...Hero's don’t have to swoop in with red capes and save the day. A hero can be an ordinary person. They can be a person helping out in the community, doing their job or a person doing a random act of kindness, like a student helping a new student in school. A hero is someone you can look up to or be like, they are determined, caring and brave. First a hero is determined. Determined is making a decision and seeing it through. Zig Ziglar said, “I believe success is achieved by ordinary people with extraordinary determination.” An example of that is Sully. Sully crash landed a plane in the hudson river because of birds and saved one hundred and fifty five people. Without determination he could have not done his job and could of not saved all of those people. Being determined is not giving up. Sully did not give up, even though he knew they were going to crash he just landed the plane in a place better for everybody on board....

...A hero is someone who you can look up to and rely on them in times of need. My hero is my grandmother, Priscilla Nauman, who was very important and inspiring to me and many other people throughout her lifetime. She was loved by many people, from close relatives to strangers she would meet at the store, a restaurant, or around the neighborhood. She was also a very determined person who would do anything she put her mind to. Everyone loved her and she loved everyone. If I had to describe her in three words, it they would be generous, strong, and vivacious. Generosity is the act of showing a gracious act toward others. My grandmother showed this trait by being generous to everyone around her. She would help less fortunate girls get into college by grading their scholarship essays before they gave them to colleges. She would do this just so that the girls could get into the colleges...
