...My Lost Homework Assignment I completed my homework assignment and left it sitting on the table. I went to get my folder so I could put it away. It took me just seconds to return to the table. My homework was gone. What could have happened to it so quickly? I checked the dog, the children and even my wife. Nobody knew anything about my missing homework. So I started a search with the help of everyone in my family. While searching I saw paper hanging out the window. It was the cover page. Then I looked outside for the other pages. As I searched I found another page in the garage. How it got there I’ll never know. As I continued my search my next door neighbor stopped me and asked if I had I lost something. I said yes. He pulled a crumpled piece of paper out of his car. He went and explained that it had blown into his car a couple blocks back. The jocks wear anything to include torn jeans/shirts, work down sneakers or boots and cheap, expensive-looking jacket. The second group, known campus-wide, is the nerds because they are obsessed with books, constantly studying and learning about their interests. The nerds wear a nice shirt with a bow tie, or a tie and a nicely ironed dress pants and always has a pocket protector to prevent ink stains from their pens. ...Book Review The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing by Alfie Kohn University of Montevallo EDF561: Evaluations in Education Susan Scott Alfie Kohn’s (2006) book, The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing, gave me food for thought. Kohn opposes homework of any kind in any form for any grade level. He explores each commonly given, pro-homework argument in an attempt to persuade his readers, both parents and teachers, of the uselessness and possibly detrimental effects of the long-standing educational tradition. The first claim Kohn (2006) makes is that our children are “missing out on their childhoods” (p. 3). His opinion is that children spend seven hours in school everyday; that should be enough. He argues that kids need more time to be kids. Such time would include family time, friend time, time spent in extracurricular activities such as sports, music and art lessons, and play groups for younger kids. I agree. Kids do need time to enjoy their childhood. It is the most carefree time of their lives, relatively speaking. Does that mean they should have no homework at all? I am not yet ready to agree completely with that attitude. “Does homework improve learning?” Kohn (2006, p. 25) asks. Teachers assign them “absurd quantities of mostly pointless homework that force students to work a second shift after having spent all day in school” (Kohn “Reconsider Attitudes”). A study done by Mediamark Research Inc. found that 60.2% of teens surveyed are stressed all the time or sometimes, and that 72.4% of the teens surveyed are stressed because they had a lot of school work ("Teens Want to Enjoy" 2-3). American teenagers are not the only ones with school related stress. In a survey done in Hong Kong, students were asked about what stressed them out, and school and standardized testing were the top two answers, with 25 of 40 and 27 of 40 students agreeing that those things stressed them out (“Are Teenagers Too Stressed?” 8). However, fretting about standardized testing isn’t just limited to teenagers in Hong Kong. It stresses American students out so much that it is not uncommon for a student to vomit during testing (Kalish). While these experts and studies have suggested that schoolwork and standardized tests are the specific problems that teens face, some teens might not agree, and it is necessary to find out; for this reason, my survey asks what is stressing teens out.
