In 1965, the United States deployed 35,000 Marines to South Vietnam. This action marked the beginning of the American ground war in Vietnam. In 1968, a small village in the Quang Ngai Province, an area which was believed to be a stronghold of the Viet Cong, was massacred by U.S. troops. The My Lai Massacre became known as one of the most horrific incidents of violence committed against civilians during the Vietnam War.
The My Lai Massacre was also known as Pinkville. Pinkville was the name given to the area of the Quang Ngai Province by Task Force Baker in February of 1968. Medina told his soldiers to treat anyone found in the village of My Lai as a Viet Cong sympathizer or fighter, because he believed the civilians of the Quang Ngai Providence had already left. His order meant, that under the rules of engagement, the soldiers were allowed to fire at anyone or anything and destroy buildings and kill livestock. On the following day, the search and destroy mission ended in what would be known as one of the most horrific incidents of violence committed against civilians in Vietnam.
On March 16, 1968, the Son My village was shelled by U.S. artillery to force fleeing civilians back to My Lai. Lt.William Calley, of Charlie Company 1st Platoon, led from the east and although he did not face any resistance, he began to kill indiscriminately the fleeing civlians. Within an hour, women, children, infants, and old men were rounded up. Calley ordered his men to begin shooting the villagers. His platoon hesitated, but within seconds the massacre had begun. ...The My Lai Massacre took place on March 16, 1968. The Massacre was a horrific event during the Vietnam War. At the beginning of the war, the American soldiers didn’t ever see their enemy. They would fall into poison bungee sticks, and were taken back to an American base for treatment; that is one way that the Americans lost some of their men. Another way that they lost soldiers, was that they would run into landmines. When the My Lai Massacre took place, the American soldiers were advised to kill anyone in the village, treating them as if they were all part of the Vietnamese military. The My Lai Massacre took place shortly after the Tet Offensive (which is another war in Vietnam). It was a bad part of American history because there were so...

Slaughter House Five

...Research Paper: Slaughter-House Five In the semi autobiographical novel, Slaughterhouse-Five, Kurt Vonnegut uses the character Billy Pilgrim to depict the effects of war, death, and post traumatic stress disorder. Kurt Vonnegut felt the need to create the character of Billy Pilgrim to express his own feelings of trauma because of the difficulty to address them on a personal level. Like Vonnegut, Billy Pilgrim was captured by the Germans, and witnessed the fire bombing in Dresden on February 13, 1945, which is known to be the most detrimental airstrike in military history, killing an estimated 135,000 people. “He was down in the meat locker on the night that Dresden was destroyed. There were sounds like giant footsteps above. Those were sticks of high explosive bombs. The giants walked and walked...A guard would go to the head of the stairs every so often to see what is was like outside, then he would come back down and whisper to the other guards. There was fire-storm out there. Dresden was one big flame. The one flame are everything organic, everything that would burn.” (Vonnegut 177) This quote from the book illustrates how the image of Dresden is instilled in Vonnegut's brain, from when he witnessed it, and how he can't let go of his lingering memories of Dresden. Billy Pilgrim is greatly disturbed by the obliteration he witnessed in Germany. These events signify Vonnegut’s painful past and he comes to terms with his pain through the writing of Slaughter-House Five....

...THE B L A C K SWAN The HIGHLY I mpact IM of the PROBABLE Nassim Nicholas Taleb U.S.A. $26.95 Canada $34.95 is a highly improbable event with three principal characteristics: It is unpre dictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan; so was 9 / 1 1 . For Nassim Nicholas Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives. A BLACK SWAN Why do we not acknowledge the phenomenon of black swans until after they occur? Part of the answer, according to Taleb, is that humans are hardwired to learn specifics when they should be focused on generalities. We concentrate on things we already know and time and time again fail to take into consideration what we don't know. We are, therefore, unable to truly estimate oppor tunities, too vulnerable to the impulse to simplify, narrate, and categorize, and not open enough to rewarding those who can imagine the "impossible." For years, Taleb has studied how we fool our selves into thinking we know more than we actually do. We restrict our thinking to the irrelevant and inconsequential, while large events continue to surprise us and shape our world. Now, in this reve latory book, Taleb explains everything we know about what we don't know. He offers...
