Using the qualities and attributes that we have talked about in class as well as what we have read in Max DePree’s (2004) book Leadership is an Art, the following is what I have learned or confirmed about myself as a leader.
Working in schools, I often hear about leaders in education falling into two categories, you’re either a transactional leader, or a transformation leader. Transactional leaders tend to look at the world through lenses of rewards, punishment, and an exchange for motivation, while transformational leaders focus on the conditions to transform a student’s learning cognitively, emotionally, socially, intuitively, and creatively. I think most people go too far in describing it as an either-or choice.

First is commitment to my students and fellow educators. When I talk about my commitment to teaching, I’m speaking of a deep connection with many people throughout the school. A second quality is passion. I’m passionate about teaching and learning, always practicing and learning how to improve my techniques. My third leadership quality embraces collaboration. I often find that the best way to be successful is by working together. Communication for my fourth leadership quality, where I try to hone my skills at listening and respect the opinions and ideas of others, knowing how to communicate my own ideas so others will understand. The final leadership quality that I try to possess every day is embracing change. I’m open to trying new things and don’t hesitate to adapt until I am as effective as I can be. Rather than waiting until I’m directed, I seek out ways to improve. In fact, my flexibility as a leader was confirmed by all of my Leadership Questionnaire scores from
