...Reflective Essay Prompts 1. Initial Reaction The address of my internship site looked familiar, I was sure of the location. Once I arrived at my internship site, I know that the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (ILCM) uses College Possible’s previous suite. I am a College Possible student, and I had been to their office before, so it was not hard for me to find my work place. However, I expected this organization to have a larger working space and more staff. On my first day, a receptionist thought that I was a client, therefore, she called my supervisor. My supervisor, Lenore, toured me around the workplace and introduced me to the staff in there. My first impression of my supervisor was that she is a serious and straightforward person....

My native language is English which I use in my everyday life. I’ve had some classes in Spanish and I know a few words but I’m not fluent in it. My parents are from the United States as well as the same city. My grandparents on my maternal side are from the United States as well, I’m not sure about my fraternal side because I don’t know much about their upcoming because my dad died when I was only 6 months old so I grew up fatherless. I have 3 sisters and In the United States, families tend to be very close and family oriented so keeping in contact with one another is usually on an everyday basis and we usually stay in similar neighborhoods or close to one another. We usually have family gatherings every month, holidays or to celebrate someone birthday. My family is very big on birthdays and holidays and it’s a disappointment to not only the parent but the children as well in my family if we don’t celebrate birthdays and holidays. My original family name was changed from Smith to Brooks when my grandmothers’ mother got married. Our family religious preference is Baptist although some of my family members have attended nondenominational churches. I’m currently not married and in the United States, it’s not uncommon for people to not be married, live together and birth kids out of wedlock...

...practices in a variety of ways, including beliefs regarding cesarean sections, preferences for female care providers, issues surrounding infibulation, lack of prenatal care and education, religious influences, and views on pain, among a variety of other issues. It is important for nurses to be aware of cultural differences in order to provide culturally competent care to all women. Somalia is a country located on the horn of Africa. All Somalis share a uniform language, religion, and culture, unlike most parts of Africa. It is common for women to marry at a young age, and the ability to have many children is highly valued. It is estimated that the maternal mortality rate is 1,400 per 100,000 women, one of the highest in the world. Somalia’s lack of medical care during pregnancy and delivery contributes to their high infant and maternal mortality rates. The experience of pregnancy and the labor and delivery process in Somalia differs in many ways from that of women in the United States. It is important that health care providers in the United States are aware of these differences because 32% of the refugees in the U.S. are from Somalia, so it is likely that providers will care for a Somali female at some point in their careers. In Somalia, cesarean sections are rarely discussed and typically not performed (Ameresekere, et al., 2011). Somali women also feel that the entire labor process is rushed in the United States. In Somalia, it is common to have a baby between 9½ and 10 months...

... This essay will explore how my personal values and ethical morals come into play in the decision-making process in my nursing career. Being raised in a loving Lutheran Christian household in Stockholm, Sweden I can remember as far back as being a little four-year-old girl skipping to church on Sunday mornings with my maternal grandmother Ingrid, to the day of my serious conformation ceremony as a gangly 14-year-old teenager. Many ideals were formed growing up around my beloved grandparents and they are still present in my everyday life be it personal or professional. I strive to be honest, live with integrity, be non judgmental and respect my fellow man. To quote my grandmother “ Always try to do the best you can or don’t do it at all”. My choice of career was greatly influenced by my paternal grandmother Johanna a midwife of 35 years (she delivered me and was also present at my daughters birth). Along my winding road of nursing the love and compassion she felt for her occupation always inspired me to pursue my goal to eventually become a labor and delivery nurse. All nurses’ practice under a universal standard of care and each nurse define his or her own ethics and responsibilities within their scope of practice. (Ulrich CM, Soeken KL, 2005). Values are considered a fundamental part of the nursing profession because they influence the way people react and conduct themselves. However, this does not automatically mean that every person in my circle of friends, coworkers or...

...My maternal grandparents are both alive and well. They currently live in Seoul, Korea, to where they moved back in 2006 after having lived in San Francisco for 36 years. I was lucky enough to be close to them for I was born in LA and spent many wonderful holidays with them before my family moved to Korea, but luckily our grandparent soon followed us to Korea where I was able to maintain a close relationship before I left for college. My grandparents are special people. They have had very colorful and interesting lives. Not only have they experienced the Korean war of 1950 and have lived through the dictator regime of South Korea of the 60's, they also took their family of 6 to the United States in 1970 to start a new life in a foreign country. It must have taken enormous courage and determination to leave everything they were familiar behind and to venture to a country of different race and culture as well as language. My grandfather was born in October 8th, 1928 although his passport dates his birth year as 1925. Evidently, mistakes on passports were common in those days due to lack of official papers that were destroyed during the war. Interestingly enough, the date of his birthday changes every year because he celebrates his birthday according to the Chinese calendar. He was born in the town Seoul Li in Kang Won province which is now in North Korea. He lost his father at early age and was very poor growing up. After he finished elementary school, he went to work...

...Mohammed Alabdulwahid Reg Johanson English 103-04 Ode to the joy of yes moments The struggle to create awareness Tears for the sake of joy There have been many negative issues covered in our class throughout this semester. Issues have ranged from social injustices, colonialism, and women’s rights. Some included personal tragedies concerning women of Aboriginal descent living in British Columbia. It has been quite emotional at times to actually read about the struggles that have taken place right here in British Columbia regarding immigrants and Aboriginal people. We even got to meet the author of Mercenary English, Mercedes Eng, in person to make the words of her story really come to life. However, not all of the books we have studied convey negative outlooks of certain problems being faced. There have been positive social changes, personal victories and many moments that make the reader believe things can be made right if an effort is put into it. This research essay will focus on the positive view portrayed in three books studied this semester which include: Mercenary English, Active Geographies-Women and Struggles on the Left Coast and the Unnatural and Accidental Women. The positive themes discussed will display triumphs on a personal level, meaningful change on a social stage and a look at how social activism deeply connects people together. Firstly, Mercenary English has a very unique way of showing social injustice, believed to be carried out in the eyes of its...

...JOSE RIZAL JOSÉ PROTACIO RIZAL MERCADO Y ALONSO REALONDA (born 19 June 1861, Calamba, Philippines- died 30 December 1896, Manila, Philippines), patriot, physician and man of letters whose life and literary works were an inspiration to the Philippine nationalist movement. Rizal was the son of a prosperous landowner and sugar planter of Chinese-Filipino descent on the island of Luzon. His mother, Teodora Alonso, one of the most highly educated women in the Philippines at that time, exerted a powerful influence on his intellectual development. He was educated at the Ateneo de Manila and the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. In 1882, he went to study medicine and liberal arts at the University of Madrid. A brilliant student, he soon became the leader of the small community of Filipino students in Spain and committed himself to the reform of Spanish rule in his home country, though he never advocated Philippine independence. The chief enemy of reform, in his eyes, was not Spain, which was going through a profound revolution, but the Franciscan, Augustinian and Dominican friars who held the country in political and economic paralysis. Rizal continued his medical studies in Paris and Heidelberg. In 1886, he published his first novel in Spanish, Noli Me Tangere, a passionate exposure of the evils of the friars rule, comparable in its effect to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. A sequel,El Filibusterismo, 1891, established his reputation as the leading spokesman of the...

...Journal of Diabetology, June 2010; 3 :4 http://www.journalofdiabetology.org/ Review Article: Diabetes in Prevention Abstract: Pakistan: Epidemiology, Determinants and * R. Hakeem 1 , 2 , A . Fawwad 2 Epidemiology and determinants of diabetes in Pakistan have peculiar combination of risk factors. Strong gene and environment interplay along with in-utero programming in context of low birth weight and gestational diabetes are the main contributors of a high prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Pakistan. The real burden of diabetes is due to its chronic complications leading to increased morbidity and mortality. The unique combination of various risk factors necessitates research studies to make appropriate risk assessment tools to control this diabetes pandemic. Better understanding of aetio-pathological genetic and environmental factors are suggesting prevention should begin much before the start of disease process and interventions in high-risk subjects alone will not be sufficient. It is necessary to initiate population based programmes for primary prevention of diabetes including a range of activities targeted at different age groups from fetal life to old age. Synchronized and coordinated efforts from public and private sectors are needed to combat this mammoth health and economic issue. Key words: Diabetes, Pakistan, Introduction: Escalation in rates of diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes in Pakistan is posing threats to the economy and quality of life...

...continue for many more years. Some opinions believe that the environment a person is in plays a part in the decision making, and to some degree that may be true. An example of this idea may be an unemployed parent who is trying to feed the children and out of desperation turns to crime as a way of fulfilling a need. In a majority of cases, criminals are defined by the crimes that they commit. Some crimes are considered to be less offensive than others and some crimes are only crimes because the behavior or activity was made criminal by legislative action which criminalized that behavior. For an example of this we need only to look to the people of the Appalachia region of the eastern United States. Early in the U.S history when the immigrants settled they brought with them their ability to distil whiskey. To those who lived in that region home brewed whiskey was part of their daily lives. U.S. legislated laws prohibiting the making and distributing of their liquor and a new culture emerged in the outlaw bootlegger. This outlaw was responsible for supplying the demand for the now illegal “corn squeeze ins” as well as the creator of a national pastime namely NASCAR. That is one example of what creates a criminal, but what about other crimes? What causes a person to become a burglar? The most common reason is the money. With a traditional employment wages are taxed. The more money that is earned the more tax is taken out. Criminals don’t pay taxes and in many instances...

...HINDU CHILDBEARING WOMEN 2 The Culture Beliefs and Practices of Hindu Childbearing Women Nurse's have a major role in providing safe and evidence-based care to promote optimal birth outcomes for all women. Maternity nurse's have a responsibility to be aware of the array of childbirth traditions practiced in America's societies. Although childbirth occurs in every culture, in each culture there are unique meanings and customs associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and neonatal period (Lewallen, 2011, p. 4). Because childbearing women cope with the stress of pregnancy and birth, as well as making the psychosocial and physical adaptations to motherhood, culturally diverse women particularly need expert, culturally sensitive nursing care (Corbett and Callister, 2012, p. 299). Hinduism is the world's oldest known religion, having been practiced over 8000 years as evidenced by ancient Hindu scriptures and is the largest Asian religion in the United States (Thrane, 2010, p. 337; Hodge, 2004, p.27). Without knowledge of Hindu child bearing woman’s practices and traditions effective nursing care is impeded and their cultural differences may affect patient-nurse interaction. To develop and improve culturally sensitive nursing care, interventions, and outcomes, it is important to explore woman’s beliefs and practices in regards to pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the neonatal period. ...

...P3 – Explain patterns and trends in health and illness among different social groupings. For this task I have been asked to produce a report to investigate which social groupings are most in need of health and social care services. To assist in the planning of care provision in my report I will be explaining patterns and trends in health and illness among different social groupings identified according to factors such as gender, social class, geographical location, ethnicity and age. SOCIAL CLASS AND PATTERNS OF HEALTH AND ILLNESS Social class is an intricate issue that consists of status, wealth, culture, background and employment. The association between social class and ill health is far from being straight-forward. There are many influences on health and one of them is social class. The Black Report on Inequalities in Health Care was commissioned by the Department of Health in the United Kingdom by Health Minister David Ennals in 1977. They wanted to point out why the NHS was failing to reduce social inequalities in health and to investigate the problems. Ennals would do this by analysing people’s health records and lifestyles from different social class backgrounds. Ennals found that the overall health of the nation had improved but the improvement was not equal across all social class backgrounds. The gap in inequalities in health between the higher and lower social classes was widening. Ethnicity “According to the 2001 census 8% of the UK’s population is...
