AA is a group that we have all heard of but most of us don’t know the history of it. The Movie “My Name Is Bill W” let the viewer learn not only the background of the group but the story of the founders. I found this movie to be quite interesting. This story showed the ups and downs of the alcoholic and how the idea of alcoholics helping alcoholics came about. The first thing that I took note of was the fact that alcoholism is the same today as it was during the great depression. I noticed many similarities between my drinking and that of some of the characters in the movies. I can say that I never got to the point that Bill did but I was on my way and could have gotten there had I not changed things. Another similarity I drew from the movie was that of the relationship between Bill and his wife. Not during the drunk years so much but that of the sober years. I say that because now that I have quit drinking, our relationship has changed quite a bit. As I stated earlier, I was never as bad as Bill W so the issues between my wife and I while drinking were never that serious but they were often. I have now been sober for over a year and we almost have to learn how to be together again. We used to be drinking buddies and now we don’t have that. So like Bill and his wife, we are having struggles to build a new relationship. One more thing that I saw in the characters of the movies that I see in my current AA meetings is the fact that AA almost becomes a replacement addition for some. I am not saying that it doesn’t help but I can see that they need it to fill their time and keep them from having another drink. Personally I have a hard time relating to that but I see it and know that it is something that the movie portrays in an accurate light.
