My lifelong dream to become a hero does not happen in some fictional story; however, in reality not only to secure and care but also save lives. I decided in 10th grade that no other career would be better for me than to become a nurse. I furthered my knowledge of nursing by taking vocational Health-science one and two my junior and senior year of high school. In addition, to continue in advancing my knowledge I applied to Itawamba Community College and meet the requirements for their nursing program.
The requirements for this career contains many obstacles and challenges. Enduring my first year of college my classes mainly pertain to prerequisites to start off excelling into the nursing program offered at Itawamba Community College. I chose …show more content…
The classes requirements or the first year of college include: A&P I&II, Fundamentals of Nursing, Microbiology, and other biology courses along with mathematics. Their maximum time for their nursing program of two years ( five semesters ) to receive an associate degree (Itawamba). Unfortunately, the courses and program come with a test to insure the knowledge learned during the two years of school. The NCLEX-RN contains a minimum number of seventy-five to a maximum number of 265 questions. This acronym stands for National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (Abbreviations). This questions everything from A&P I and II to Microbiology . Usually, many students do not pass the first attempt ;however, to be able to work in MS 100 percent is the only exception. The nursing field entry level of work requires passing the NCLEX-RN test. Unfortunately, no numerical grading system shows the numbers missed and or accurate. (AllNurses). Once determined whether I passed or failed, obtaining my licenses opens a variety of opportunities surfacing to be in a working facility. Some of these jobs include working in hospitals, clinics, jails, or maybe even the …show more content…
Their hours also vary from 8-12 hour shifts depending on facility (all nurses). North Mississippi Medical Center’s nurses get up to 80 hours to pto and or two weeks vacation time. Other places vary time off for their workers depending on what degree mastered. Nevertheless, nurses work a lot. Countless hours of working on your feet, hardly receiving breaks, always on call so someone forever needs your help with something.. Nurses by theirself sacrifice a lot to get the job done. Becoming a registered nurse first takes determination. In order to get my associate degree I must first remain focus and accomplish my minor tasks which taking my required classes and the getting accepted into Icc’s nursing program while achieving my major one which is receiving my degree and passing my NCLEX-RN test. I to do a total of five semesters ( two years) with the minor courses and nursing program itself. I have had multiple experience doing clinicals provided by the school ;however, when I am at ICC more hands on experiences come with the lessons. The best part about becoming a nurse takes sacrifices just to know that you are able to be a caregiver for many people . I personally love the feeling because I use to baby sit and watch children for as long as I could remember. The only bad part I

...don’t have nurses in my family nor did I dream of becoming a nurse since childhood, but instead the answer to this question is much more personal and somewhat unexplainable even to myself. The unexplainable part is the calling I have always felt to help others, but my journey to realizing my nursing aspirations happened because of a distinct experience. Through this experience I witnessed sincere caring, impartial nursing, humanitarian advocacy, and overall remarkable healthcare Circumstances leading up to my experience are imperative therefore I must give you some insight of my life prior to my transformative experience. I graduated high school in 2001 (junior year) to study dance in Manhattan. I have always loved dance and I am a very passionate person so it only made since to study what I love. My freshman year of college I was blocks away during 9/11 and ultimately decided to leave school after the terrorist attack. Nursing

...Nursing in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Proposal For many years I have known that I wanted to pursue a career in nursing, however, it was not until late 2008 I decided I wanted to be a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) nurse. After delivering my daughter, my family and I became intimately familiar with what the PICU was. The PICU staff was dedicated to my daughter and our family. We were part of a PICU family for three months while my daughter’s heart condition was being treated. Those were the hardest three months of my life and at the same time they opened my eyes to the importance of a nurse in this role. PICU nurses are not only caregivers but also a support system. I propose to further research nursing in a PICU to make sure I fully understand the scope of my future career. The responsibilities of a PICU nurse are to assess and monitor the patient, provide care, and to communicate and support the family as a whole. I plan to use this semester to further research about the responsibilities of a PICU nurse by finding online information, conducting an interview with a PICU nurse and to interview PICU family members. I believe the interviews will allow me to see the importance of being a valuable member of a PICU nursing staff as well as a way to better assist the family members as their loved one is being cared for. In conclusion, I propose to research the responsibilities of a PICU nurse by conducting online research and interviews with a current PICU nurse...

Professional Development of Nursing Professionals

...Professional Development of Nursing Professionals Kaylene Ross Grand Canyon University November 30, 2014 Professional Development of Nursing Professionals The Institute of Medicine ( IOM) report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health was published in 2010. This report looked at the most trusted profession in the United States, nursing, to recommend practice and insure safe quality care to citizens in the coming years. Through its deliberations, the committee developed four key messages: Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training, nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression, nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States and effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and information infrastructure.("Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health," 2013) This paper will focus on the impact of the IOM report on nursing education, nursing practice and the role of nurses. Impact of the IOM Report on Nursing Education As centuries pass by, the technology and education needs for members of the healthcare team increase and become more complex. 100 years ago nurse education consisted of 2-3 years of training in a hospital setting ending up with a diploma. In 2010, the IOM report suggested that by 2020...

Reflection Paper

...Running Head: REFELECTION PAPER Reflection Paper NUR3805 Professor OrNah 11/09/2014 Reflection Paper Why do you think it is important for the nurse at the bedside that nursing is recognized as a discipline? The nursing profession is made up of several different subspecialties and career paths, which have developed a positive view on the nursing career. Marilyn Parker discusses how a discipline must have a clearly defined domain, which expresses the theory and focus of the profession. The traditional nurse is responsible for a wide array of roles such as: educator, advocate, counselor, and caregiver. The world’s view of the nursing profession is a well-distinguished career field. “The discipline of nursing is a community of scholars, including nurses in all venues, where nursing occurs.”(Parker, 2003, p. 8) I think it is important for the nurse at the bedside that nursing is recognized as a discipline because for centuries nurse theorist and other nurses have contributed to the success of the career. If I was asked what the normal blood flow through the heart is, I could easily consult my memory, my anatomy textbook, or search for the answer online. Thus, I know for certain that there is only one correct answer. Many questions that arise during bedside patient care are indeed science related and often have only one correct answer. On the other hand, during patient care there are several questions...

Difference Between Adn and Bsn

...associate’s degree in nursing program provided by community colleges or the baccalaureate of science in nursing program provided by colleges and universities? One similarity is for sure that nurses from both programs can take the NCLEX-RN exam. Before I started college I was debating whether I should go to school for an Associate Degree in Nursing or a Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing, but because I just had a baby and the university is one hour away from our home, I decided to go ahead and enter the registered nursing program in our community college. I know that there is a lot of differences between nurses that are prepared at the associate-degree level versus the baccalaureate degree level in nursing that is why I set a goal that someday I will go back to school for my Bachelor’s degree. This paper will be explaining the difference in competencies between nurses prepared at the associate degree level versus the baccalaureate degree level in nursing by comparing their education, patient care and opportunities. This paper will also give some examples about a patient care situation in which how nursing care approaches to decision making may differ based upon the educational preparation of a BSN versus ADN. Associate Degree Nurses and Baccalaureate Nurses Differences with Education An associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) program is two years shorter than the baccalaureate degree , and focuses on clinical skills and learning technical aspects of nursing appropriate for patient...

Educational Preparation

...Educational Preparation Paper Grand Canyon University: NRS 434 This paper will discuss the differences in competencies between nurses prepared at the associate-degree level versus the baccalaureate-degree level, by using research from different nursing organizations found online. Also identifying a patient care situation in which I will describe how nursing care or approaches to decision-making may differ based upon the educational preparation of the nurse. Differences in competencies between ADN versus BSN In conducting the research for this paper I was a little biased in my opinions of this topic and had to keep an open mind. I am an associate-degree level nurse, and have been for six years. I feel that my experience has taught me a lot about critical thinking, and helping patients improve their outcomes. I felt pressure in to completing my baccalaureate-degree level of education before I felt that I was ready to complete the education. I now have a better understanding into baccalaureate education as being the accepted minimum requirement for nurses. Much research has been done, relating to BSN versus ADN nurses and better patient outcomes. In Grand Canyon University College of Nursing Philosophy, it states “Baccalaureate nursing practice incorporates the roles of assessing, critical thinking, communicating, providing care, teaching, and leading.” I feel that no matter what education level one has after nursing programs that this is a baseline for nurses. It was hard...

Medication Errors

...in Nursing INTRODUCTION For many years, people tended to think of nurses as one homogenous group. Nurses were expected to be able to take care of problems in whatever circumstances they were presented. Things have changed, today, nurses are increasingly having the choice of specializing and branching out to other fields in nursing. Nurses have the diversity to continually educate themselves and raise their level of knowledge. Mary O’ Connor, explored the art of the nine dimensions of nursing leadership and the relationship between the nine dance metaphors. In this paper, I am going to explore one of the nine dimensions . I chose of diversity as a vehicle toward wholeness, and reflect on my own story of diversity and what I believe is a good nurse leader. Diversity and Leadership in Nursing As a small child, I knew I wanted to be in the medical profession, from playing doctor and nurse in my childhood years, to now in my adult life becoming an Registered Nurse. My mother was a nurse, and I find myself walking in her shoes everyday. My mother always had stories to tell me of her work experiences and she encouraged me and gave me the confidence I have today. After 20 years of being in the nursing profession, and 20 years of learning on the job, I have no regrets about my career choices. My career has lead me to where I am today. I have come to realize that it is is important to appreciate that leadership roles are different from management functions. My story...

Licensed vocational nurse has different competencies than associate degree nursing; and Baccalaureate degree different than associate degree nursing. In this paper, we are going to discuss the differences in competencies between nurses prepared at the associate-degree level versus the baccalaureate-degree level in nursing. Competencies Differences The associate program is usually 2-3 years long and it is usually offered at the community colleges. The associate degree nursing students usually learn the knowledge, and skills. These skills are required to care for individuals and families during illness and recovery after medical treatment. ADN nurses practice a more restricted level of nursing care such as skilled nursing and long term care facilities, corrections and clinics. The associate nurse teaching is more focused on direct hands such as hospitals and community care. “The associate degree nursing programs have fewer such as 72-80 units of...

Impact of the Iom Report on Nursing Education, Practice, and Leadership

...IMPACT OF THE IOM REPORT ON NURSING EDUCATION, PRACTICE, AND LEADERSHIP The demands for health care are increasing each day and will significantly increase with the new Affordable Care Act (ACA) now in place, which was passed by the United States Congress and later signed by President Obama in 2010. The passing of the ACA will ultimately allow millions of people who are un-insured to be insured and receive health care. In 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) committee spent two years evaluating and transforming the nursing profession in order to help ready the future needs of healthcare. Two years later, on October 5, 2010 and just months after the ACA was signed, the IOM published its report named The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Healthcare which partially focuses on the transformation of nursing education, practice and leadership roles of nursing. The IOM report focuses on the importance of nurses enhancing their education to meet the expanding technological advances and expansion of the nursing role by pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees. These opportunities include nursing research, education, and IOM’s main focus, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). A key point the committee states is that “nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression" ("IOM Nursing Report," 2010). By achieving a higher level of education...

Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success

...and the decision is made to go back to school, additional research and careful consideration is given in deciding what type of program to attend. There are basic considerations, including program and cost, but the future student should also consider that not all programs are created equal. Graduate study programs often have different objectives and focus (Kuther, PhD, 2013). It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that the program of choice matches his or her desired learning preferences. I knew I wanted to be a nurse from the time I started college, and it did not take long working in the field to determine that I was meant for health care management. My BSN and management ability has enabled me to work my way up to a senior management position, as the Chief Nursing Officer, at a rural hospital. I believe that by obtaining the MSN/MHA dual degree, doors will continue to open in health care administration.   For this reason, I have found my way back to school and I am a proud virtual student at University of Phoenix (UOPX). Through my life journey, I have worked hard to manage my demanding career while helping my wife raise a family and set a good example for our children. While I am traveling the path to my graduate degree, my goal is to succeed in making good grades and continue to manage my family and my career. In the long-term, I hope my decision to improve myself will reflect upon my children, and...

...Introduction Nursing is a call to serve the humanity. Present day healthcare system focused on preventive care and wellness has become highly advanced which makes every nurse responsible to achieve maximum level of education, skills and power of knowledge to meet the challenges. Continuous research in nursing and the evidence obtained from the research serves to support the nursing care. Continuing education helps nurses to keep track of all the developments taking place in the field, trace advances in technology and care, have a better understanding of all current rules and regulations, beware of all ethical and legal aspects of nursing as envisaged by various boards of nursing and other authorities in the field of healthcare. In this paper, I would like to explain the position statement of career development in nursing. It is only through proper and continued education that nurses can provide patients better care, assess and report what is best for the patient and always seek ways to improve patient outcome. In order to achieve the best results, nurses need to identify the core knowledge, scientific principles, skills and attitudes of nursing practice to improve healthcare system (International Council of Nurses, 2007). Therefore career development must be achieved by integrating care through our scholastic system, giving nurses opportunity to learn, grow and move up the ladder, making them capable of leading from the forefront. Impact of the Iom on Mursing Education

...EDUCATION ENHANCES NURSING 1 The nursing workforce today consists of a wide range of educated professionals. These professionals are from all races, both male and female, young and old. Their educational background varies from, diploma, associate, baccalaureate or graduate degrees. Each nursing program has different graduation requirements, which determine the length of time to complete the program. Many factors can influence which program best suits the individual’s needs. Financial hardship, logistics or the amount of time available to devote to the curriculum are a few. Potential nurses also must consider their career objectives, and roles they would like to play in the nursing field. Nursing education can be compared to a stepping-stone. All paths begin with stones, as the path widens, the stones may stack. One degree may follow another and careers will advance as you grow in your profession. Nursing education prepares the students to practice differently. Associate Degree and Bachelor of Science Nursing degrees are the two most prevalent program choices. Prerequisites are required and clinical rotations will occur in both programs, however Associate Degree programs are known for more clinical experience. Associate Degree Nursing, ADN programs focus more on science, and technical skills. These programs began to address the nursing shortage. Completion usually takes two to three years. Two...
