...Functions of Management Paper MGT/330-Management: Theory, Practice and Application July 4, 2010 Matthew Jordan Functions of Management Paper Management is the key to accomplishing organizational goals. With effectiveness (achievement of the goals) and efficiency (achievement of goals while utilizing resources such as money, time, materials and people without waste), it can be the difference between great management and poor management. While great managers are able to focus on both criteria, others are only capable to focus on one and not the other. Unfortunately, there are poor managers who are unsuccessful at both. These two criteria, however, are not the only components to successful management as the circumstances surrounding the process of conducting business are changing in today’s business world. “The great executives not only adapt to changing conditions but also apply-fanatically, rigorously, consistently, and with discipline-the fundamental management principles,” (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Included in these fundamentals are the four traditional functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. When applying these fundamentals to the process of accomplishing organizational goals, effective and efficient management is inevitable. The first function of management is planning. Specifying the goals of the organization takes place in planning as well as its necessary actions needed in achieving those goals. Activities of planning...

...Finding the Leader in You: Self-Assessment / Johari Window Shawnique Small Mr. James Bankston BUS 520 – Leadership and Organizational Behavior July 17, 2013 This paper will address issues of personal understanding, planning, and professional development. It will analyze a self – assessment, which will enable me to understand how intuitiveness, culture, diversity, and leadership style influence decision making. This paper will also use the Johari Window which emphasizes that we may not be aware of everything that there is to know about ourselves. Personality is defined as the overall combination of characteristics that capture the unique nature of a person as that person reacts to and interacts with others. To develop a profile of my personality characteristics, I used the Big Five Personality Dimensions. The Big 5 are defined as the following: Extraversion (outgoing, sociable, assertive), Agreeableness (good-natured, trusting, cooperative), Conscientiousness (responsible, dependable, persistent), Emotional stability (unworried, secure, relaxed), and Openness to Experience (imaginative, curious, broad-minded). According to The Big Five Personality Test (www.outofservice.com/bigfive/results), the following are my results: Openness to Experience / Intellect – I am somewhat conventional, which means that I am down to earth, I have narrow interests and that I am uncreative. Conscientiousness – I am very well organized, and can...

The group members are enthusiastic about the project and arrange a meeting time to begin planning. You forget to mark your calendar and miss the meeting. The group posts a summary of the meeting with assignments and deadlines for the project. You apologize to the group and agree to complete the topic research for the project. You realize you have a paper due in another course on the same day your research is due and concentrate most of your time on your individual assignment. The paper takes longer than you thought, and you are unable to conduct research for the group project by the deadline. You feel bad about this and do not respond to inquiries from group members. ...Compare and Contrast Paragraphs I do not think have any terms to define. I will try my best to write what rent means and the write what buy means. Although I know that everybody already knows what they mean. Rent is where you pay a certain amount of money every month for the use of the property. Buy means to acquire by payment. So when you are renting something you paying to use it, when you are buying something it is yours to keep so to speak. I do believe that those are really the only two terms that I will have to define. Yes I will be using compare and contrast paragraphs. I will be comparing the same benefits between buying a house and renting an apartment. There are not many similarities between the two. The only thing I can think that would be the same would be the fact they both supply a roof over your head. When comparing these two I will have to look for some similarities between the both. The contrasting part of the essay will not be that hard. There a lot of differences between renting and buying a home. This part will be easy to do. The hardest part will be comparing the two. I will be contrasting the difference between renting and buying a house. When you rent there are things that you can technically get by with. When you buy the more things that you have do and there are certain things that you can do. When you rent there are certain thing that you cannot do. Which when you rent there are all kinds of rules that you have follow set by your landlord. When you...

...Bricketto Rodemann Econ Tuesday and Thursday 2nd 12 Febuary 2012 The Catch Up During the month of September italys government sold a slug of five year old paper at one of its usual bond auctions. there was hardly enough demand for the bonds to meet supply even we a steep interest rate. contrast that with the sale in august of 20 billion yuans, which is 20 billion in us dollars, of paper by China in hong Kong;s fledgling offshore market. the yield was miserly yet there were bonds for sale. This tale of two bonds auctions is a parable for the contrasting fortunes of near stagnant rich economies and fast growing emerging markets. twenty of the 82 econmics covered in the back pages of the Economist grew by 3% or more in the year to the latest quarter. only two, of these, Austria and Sweden, are from the traditional group of rich ones, such as Taiwan and Hong Kong. The IMF's the latest forecast is that emerging economies will grow by more than 6% in 2011 and 2012. But growth in the rich world is likely to be below 2%. The other half lives is the rotters economic news over that summer and depending euro-zones mess mean it is easy to forget that countries that now account for half the worlds output and most of its population are doing rather well. that is the focus of my special report on the world economy. But it is equally easy and unwise to think that cupid and trouble-free growth in the emerging economics is assured for years to come. ...

...enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk. To me personally the term means someone who can run a business that is strong minded, a risk taker, and is not afraid of failure. This paper will tell you more about what these 3 characteristics mean. Being strong minded is so important for someone who is an entrepreneur for many reasons. You have to stay positive when things go wrong and stay focus when things are good. My uncle for example owns a business and is an entrepreneur himself, he tells me every day how hard it is to stay strong minded. This is one of the characteristics of the word entrepreneur. The term entrepreneur goes way back to the late 1700’s in which the term first appeared in the French dictionary in 1723 to describe a person who organizes and operates a business by taking a financial risk. Which shows you that taking risks is important in becoming a successful entrepreneur. You can look at successful business men who are entrepreneurs and I guarantee they have had to take so many risks. Shark Tank’s Barbara Corcoran turned a $1,000 loan into a $5 billion-dollar real estate business that she sold for $66 million back in 2001. That just goes to show you that you can’t be afraid to take risk. An important part of my definition to this term is that you have to be ready to struggle and fail at times. Richard Branson said it best “Few first ventures work out. It is how a beginning entrepreneur deals with failure that sets that person...

...Race and Your Community Andre Walton ETH 125 Heather Bickley Axia College During my 33 years on this earth I’ve lived in many different communities that have there own success and challenges. The challenges mainly presented themselves as racial inequality or stereotyping. This has been evident as a resident of both communities in New York and Florida. The ways to bridge the racial and cultural gaps are through patience, education and understanding of each others backgrounds and core values. I’m from the island of Barbados where race, color or creed was not an issue; regardless of your geographic location on the island we all ate the same foods, enjoyed the same things and spoke the same language. Those in my neighborhood looked like me but in many different shades, even Caucasians were dark because of the 365 days of sun that lathered the island. Two of my closest friend were white but I didn’t realize this until my first two weeks in America. In Barbados there is no separation of races within the community and there is absolute unity as we all consider ourselves Barbadians. When I moved to New York City in 1983 my community was very different form what I was accustom too. There was a mix of different races and cultures and the neighborhoods were segregated by cultures. For example, I lived in a community that had neighborhoods named after the ethnicity of the group. Little Italy, China Town, Little Russia, etc. In many cases if you were not apart of this culture you...

... ABSTRACT Is the U.S. Justice system a failing system? Are policemen allowed to take the law into their own hands? Are crime labs paid to send innocent people to prison? In my brief research paper we will look at some of the injustices facing U.S. citizens in today’s society and we will discover solutions to some of these problems plaguing our society. A Failed/Corrupt Criminal Justice System The United States of America is well known for her justice system catering to the wealthy (ones who can afford the top lawyers) and no so much to the less fortunate. Those who cannot afford to be represented by their own lawyers are faced with a tough upward struggle proving their innocence in an arena that would label them guilty before any true defense begins. How far does this injustice go? Are innocent people being persecuted based on race, social standings and incentives for prosecution? Is there an issue with law enforcement carrying out their duties? Is there truly justice in our justice system? There has been, in recent months, an upheaval in the U.S. Justice system due to the procedures done by officers detaining criminals. The actions, which have been perceived by many to be infringement on civil rights, leave the lives and the law totally into the officer’s hand. It reminds me of one of my favorite movies growing up, Judge Dredd, where the police can also act as the jury, judge and executioner with no penalty to face. As a child growing up this concept was nonchalant...

...Overcoming Communication Shortfalls Peter Mekhail GM591 - Leadership and Organizational Behavior Professor Joseph Plumley December 11, 2011 Introduction The organization that will be used as the topic of my course project will be my current employer, Cullum Detuners, Ltd. (CDL). CDL is a design-build company that provides acoustic support for the gas turbine industry. The headquarters for the company is U.K. based and employs mainly British personnel for the management team. Over the last few years the company has been extremely profitable but growth has been stagnant. Workload in our U.K. facilities has diminished even during this extremely busy work time for the company. In the recent years the management team has determined that the actual fabrication of the products could be off-shored at tremendous cost savings to the organization. This reduction in U.K. factory workers has caused some strife within the home office. With the recent reductions in U.K. workforce we have seen overall retirements increase and the loss of critical employees. This loss of long term employees within the office staff has created some distinct communication issues. Through this lack of communication power and politics has become the norm for daily working within the home office. With the missing communication model we have seen the directors take the position of defending their groups and creating a power struggle for the overall leadership role among the directors. This situation...

...1 NUCLEAR WEAPONS AND THE ESCALATION OF THE COLD WAR, 1945-1962 David Holloway, Stanford University Nuclear weapons are so central to the history of the Cold War that it can be difficult to disentangle the two. Did nuclear weapons cause the Cold War? Did they contribute to its escalation? Did they help to keep the Cold War “cold?” We should ask also how the Cold War shaped the development of atomic energy. Was the nuclear arms race a product of Cold War tension rather than its cause? The Atomic Bomb and the Origins of the Cold War The nuclear age began before the Cold War. During World War II, three countries decided to build the atomic bomb: Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union. Britain put its own work aside and joined the Manhattan Project as a junior partner in 1943. The Soviet effort was small before August 1945. The British and American projects were driven by the fear of a German atomic bomb, but Germany decided in 1942 not to make a serious effort to build the bomb. In an extraordinary display of scientific and industrial might, the United States made two bombs ready for use by August 1945. Germany was defeated by then, but President Truman decided to use the bomb against Japan. The decision to use the atomic bomb has been a matter of intense controversy. Did Truman decide to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki in order, as he claimed, to end the war with Japan without further loss of American lives? Or did he drop the bombs in order to intimidate the Soviet...
