Myplace: The Place for Diversity Multimedia Analysis Jennifer Dockery COMM/315 March 19, 2012 Nikki Wetzel

When we understand the visible and the hidden dimensions of diversity it increases our knowledge and understanding of the differences. Diversity brings out the different qualities in each individual which makes us interesting? We need to base what we think about someone by their hidden characteristics and not their visual, otherwise we are judging them unfairly. The way you look or the way you were raised is your visual characteristics and this is not the most important. However this is what most people base their opinions on. If you would get to know ones hidden characteristics along with their visual we could understand a person more in their diversity. Understanding the hidden Not only can diversity be seen there is some diversity that cannot be known unless we get to know the person better. For instance, Jenna, (profiled in; ‘My Place: The Place for Diversity’) would be judged based on her visual characteristics. If you were see her at the store she would be judged based upon the way she looked and by her appearance. An

My Secret Place

...My Secret Place Guides1Questions1orSubmit my paper for analysis What is your attitude towards loneliness? Do you think it is a curse, when you are isolated from the rest of the world, left face-to-face with yourself? Or do you, on the contrary, seek it, appreciating each moment of silence you can snatch from the surrounding world? These small breaks can help you replenish your energy and reorganize your thoughts, so that you can start each day as a new one—not as an extension of a previous one. As for me, I am more of the second kind of person; solitude for me is a gift, which is valued less by people than it should be accorded. In my child and teen years, I had a perfect place to go to when I felt like being on my own. In a small town in the center of America, where I lived back then, we had a steep hill on the outskirts. On its top, an old warehouse stood. No one, even older people, seemed to know who had built that warehouse in such an inconvenient place, and what for. Some said that smugglers used it during World War II for their purposes; others told stories about local slaveholders, who lived in our town a long time ago—those people were thought to have kept slaves in the old warehouse. For us children, that old wooden shack was a haunted place with a grim, bloody story of love and treason. None of the townsmen had ever visited the old warehouse. Children were scared and adults just did not feel like climbing up the steep slope for no reason. For most of a year...

My Favorite Place

...My Favorite Place Gatlinburg, Tennessee is my favorite place to be for many reasons. In the city there are many small stores and different restaurants to choose from. There is never a boring moment at any time of the day. Every time I visit Gatlinburg I always have an awesome and eventful time. My main favorite place in Tennessee is my grandma’s house. My grandma has always kept many farm and house animals. In the backyard there is an old gray barn with white doors, four windows, and the paint is slowly peeling away on the outside. The barn contains a few pigs, cows, and chickens. She always has had a dog inside the house, currently a caramel colored Boxer named Sammy. About a mile from each side of her house are two big farms. One farm grows different crops such as hay and corn. The other farm has many cows roaming around inside of a fenced area while grazing on hay. There is also an oval shaped pond in her backyard. After a long day I always swim in the pond and in the middle of it there is a huge navy blue raft I swim to and sit on for a while. The pond also stocked with fish so it’s fun to go fishing in too. I love visiting my grandma during the summer because it is very peaceful and eventful. Another reason I enjoy being in Tennessee is the extremely beautiful weather that it has. There are consistent hot and sunny temperatures. In the summer it is usually around 80-100+ degrees outside. During this time I’m never occupied in the house at all and I’m pretty much living...

My Favorite Place

...Working to find my inner peace, I go from place to place just looking for the solitude. A warm, comforting place that I may call my own. That place has been found and not many can claim it for it is mine. Out in the rolling country side of Fort Meade, Florida is a dream just unfolding. The Sunkist sunrise and sunset, the breath taking stars, and the calm, solitary squeeze against my being just makes it all the more better. On the outskirts of the Lilliputian town there is nothing more than the everlasting land where it’s hard to tell where the sky starts and where it stops. Nothing more than a relationship between nature and myself. Cool breezes drag the scent of pine trees and water through the air and the grass grows tall and dark green. Hawks, pigeons, and quails make beautiful music as their aria begins to sync. So the only sounds you can hear are the arias being sung and the wind blowing through my hair. The sunset glows of many pinks, yellows, lavenders, and blues as the day begins to kiss the land goodnight. The numerous birds flee to their nests as they begin to drift into slumber as the night is just beginning. The luminous moon rises to the center of the dark, velvet curtain. Its illumination kisses every tree, strand of grass, and the mist obscuring the few houses that scatter the land. Although the birds are nestled in their homes, the foxes, raccoons, and creatures of the night come out to find their next meal. No longer is there a breeze brushing my skin for it is...

My Fav Place

...My Favorite Place The alarm rang from my phone, flashing loudly that it was 6:30AM. I knew I had to get up and get ready for school. As I pressed the snooze button, I laid in bed under the warmth of the layers of my blanket. Halfway asleep, I turned and saw the light peeking through between the long red curtains shining on my face, made it harder for me to get up. My room was pitch black even if it was light out. I always had trouble getting out of bed. I prefer it that way, because it makes my room cozier. Being within the confines of my blankets made me feel like a warm burrito. I looked at my phone once again and it said 6:45AM. I had gotten up immediately to made sure I was not late for class. I pulled my curtains to the side, it gave me more light throughout my room. As that happened, I started to squint because it was so bright. Already being at school, I felt like I wanted to go back home to sleep. I was imagining myself sitting on my bed, in my quiet room. It is one of my favorite places to be in. I was so exhausted. I was relieved that I had my hot coffee because I would have been knocked out in class. Thankfully I only had two classes to attend that day. When I went on my break between classes, I started to talk to my friend Lala; “Hey morning! omg it is so early for class… I just really want to go back to bed” “Hey’ yes for real girl I almost fell asleep in Micro Economics” Lala said. “I know tell me about it” I said. After finishing my classes for...

My Happy Place

...As I sit here, on the hood of my car looking out into the vast field I think to myself, why this place? Out of all the places that mean so much to me, why does this place stand out the most? Everyone has that one spot that is special to him or her for various reasons whether it be a memory, experience, how it makes them feel, etc. For me, my favorite place encompasses all my senses bringing them to an all time high filling me with an overwhelming indescribable feeling. It’s my sanctuary, a safe place, but above all a place to clear my mind and getaway from reality. There aren’t enough captivating words to describe the beauty of this place. In the winter, the vast field covered in a blanket of untouched glimmering snow surrounded by bare trees brings a certain type of quiet stillness to the place. The only sign of life are the tracks made by the various animals that are brave enough to stick around during the chilly winter temperatures. The spring brings new life to the space with the blossoming of nature, muddy shoeprints and birds singing their sweet little songs. In summer, the preserve comes to the peek of its lifecycle packed with people and laughter. Nature’s vibrant colors and the soft sounds make it seem as if it was a scene out of a perfect movie. The fall brings cool crisp air to fill your lungs with and the unspeakable beauty of the leaves changing colors. Each season encompasses a different vibe to the preserve leaving me with different emotions. The preserve is located...

My Favorite Place

...April 17,2012 My Favorite Place Through out the whole world, there are plenty of places where people love to go. Some may be a certain area, a store, a home, or even a different country. One place can hold special values to one person. Whether it’s a memory or memories, a feeling, or even just being in the environment. All of it leads up to being a persons “favorite place”. Everyone has a favorite place in their home, a place where he or she can be him or herself. Somewhere you can find peace and harmony. For some it's a quiet place, for others it's a hustling, bustling, full of people and movement place. But all of these places have one thing in common; they are places where you'd run to in times of both joy and stress. There is one place to me that makes me feel like I am the only one in the world. I chose this place because its stress free. It’s the only place in my house where I can be myself. I don’t have to worry about what others have to say. I can lay back and relax on my bed. A lot of times I just lay down and close my eyes and daydream about places I'd like to see or think about things that make me happy. One thing I do not do is think about things I need to get done or anything that makes me feel stressed because then I’ll never feel relaxed. I usually try to stay away from these kinds of thoughts and it usually works out well. Being able to watch whatever I please on my own television. Even playing my Xbox 360, without having to share with my brothers. Having...

My Meaningful Place

...part of us and all of us miss it, and my meaningful place when I was still a little is my home because it is a symbol of my childhood enjoying a good times with friends in village, with my siblings and happy feelings when im at home. To me, childhood is the time that formed my personality and now those times are just in the past, I still remember running around a village with my friends, playing with my bother and sister in a living room where me and them had to put some cushions around so nothing could get broken by us while we were pretending as a superhero fighting with a evil to rescue people in our village. I can recall these memories at anytime I want but those especially appear in front of my eyes whenever Im at my actually home. Because I think I could do everything again as playing with every toy in my room and on a playground of the house. Due to my school and work, I have to live far from the house but my siblings and I made a habit to come back here every weekend with all my brothers and sisters that have moved on. When we talk, we usually recall many of fighting and jokes that we made when we were children. WE enjoy every weekend at here a lot. Eating dinner is not a rush to us to swallow the food as fast as we could so we can go back to play whatever we were playing earlier, but a true dinner where everyone passing rice bowls around, laughing and enjoying others’ stories about life and work. Leaving a house to stay at a place where is near to school and work might...

Family Values

...Values As I walked into the house, I could almost taste the eggnog that would be waiting for me on the table. Eyeing the plate of cookies, I forced myself to follow my Gram up the stairs to the attic. The cookies could wait. I had come to help my Gram set up her miniature Christmas village. For Christmas each year I would give my Gram a new building, ice skater, or tree to add to her village. Her face would light up as she found the perfect place for the village’s newest addition. About two weeks before Christmas I would arrive at my Grams house to help her set up the village. I would watch in amazement as she placed each individual piece in the same exact place as she had the year before - slightly altering the village to welcome the newest addition. This was my favorite Christmas tradition when I was a child, and I looked forward to it every year. Although I live a distance away from my Gram, I visit frequently and wish I had more time to do so. She has always been completely engaged in my daily life, and it would seem strange to not see her on the first day of school each year, camera in hand, eager to take my picture. My Gram acts as a second mother to me, and I can always count on her for support. I have grown to trust her completely and she always seems to be the person who is there to help me. My Gram is the first person I go to for help and I can talk to her about virtually anything. Regardless of the subject of our conversations, she loves the fact that I talk...

...Effective communication in the work place is essential for a successful work place environment. I have been in numerous work places where the communication was poor and I have been in work place environments where the communication flowed and we were very successful in getting the job done. Understanding each other and what each other bring to the table, brings a level of respect amongst the employees in the work environment. There was one time when I was stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri my new job was going to be a instructor, teaching new soldiers the job of Combat Engineer. My part of that process was teaching them demolition training in which we teach them inert training and when they passed that, they were allowed to go outside to the demolition range and blow up C-4 and dynamite. Effective communication between myself and other instructors was paramount as we had to weed out soldiers that needed more training and wasn’t yet ready to use the real stuff. We had to continuously confer with each other every hour sometimes every thirty minutes to make sure that we were on the same page reference to the soldiers. Being that demolitions have no one’s name on it, we had to ensure from a safety standpoint to leave certain soldiers in the classroom to continue training on inert demolitions. To be absolutely effective in what we did as instructors, we placed a high commitment on communication as we had hand held walkie talkies on us and we were in contact on cell phones...

Travel as Medicine

...Due: 7-11-11 The serenity of Caribbean waters or the rich culture of European countries all take me to a place far from the monotonous day to day routine of life. The mere thought of getting away from it all immediately brings calmness to my spirit and a recharge to my battery. Travel carries a universal theme of being therapeutic and has often been noted as one of the best forms of medicine. Therapy is played out by the simple idea of being in a place outside the norm, taking time to rejuvenate with rest and relaxation and creating lasting memories to draw from for those times when travel is needed but not warranted. These are instances where getting away may not be conducive to a persons schedule or budget and memories then become priceless commodities that can be pulled out at any given time. There are millions of places to travel to nationwide and abroad. Tourists are constantly seeking new beaches, museums, national parks and places that allow them to see and visit sites outside of their normal cities. Frequent travelers often take trips seasonally, annually or at will if money is no issue. However, the average consumer may simply look for outlets to relieve stress and places that allow them to do so. Taking a vacation does not necessarily have to constitute flying clear across the country just to get away. Going to a place that you have never visited before could be medicinal therapy in and of itself if it allows a break in routine. Rest and relaxation are two...

Work Environement

...ability to expand my career, and management. I am a very organized person. I have worked in an environment that was an absolute mess. I was not able to find the correct file easily. It took me a couple months to understand how everything was placed. In an unorganized environment I found my productivity to be very low because I spent most of my time finding the right document instead of working on it. It is very important that I know my career can grow with the company. If I work at places that limit my ability to grow, it lowers my motivation. On the other hand, if the work environment allows me to expand with the company, I would spend more time and try harder to work my best. The last and most important is management of the work environment. Working in a company with poor management would be a disaster. I have had a manager that changed his mind all the time. One day he set up all the rules, and the other day he broke all of them. It is very hard to work with a manager that doesn’t commit to his/her management. Poor management can lead to a lot of issues in work environment. I have never worked at a place that has all of the characteristics above. It would be my ideal work environment if the company is well organized, has the ability to expand my career, and has good management. My current job as an intern in a CPA office gives me the ability to expand my career and has good management. However, due to the heavy work load the work place is not as organized...

Beauty

...Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen, for the next few minutes I will share with you my perspective about beauty. I have a quote, which did not only capture my mind, but also captured my heart. Helen Keller said: “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart.” She is American author, political activist, and lecturer. She was the first deaf blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree she was blind. You might be wondering why I have decided to talk to you about this quote, but instead of me just telling you, I will take you to a journey that might place you in my position. Let me ask you this, with a raise of hands how many of you would like to live in a house like this? Well, it is a common goal in today’s fast-paced society to achieve monetary wellness in order to live what some people call “the good life”. In this house you have the latest technology and a crew of people that are more than willing to take care of all of your needs. Now, picture yourself in this house. It certainly does not compare, right? So what is my point? Why am I showing these pictures? Well what you do not know is that in the second picture lives an aged couple who had been married for over 20 years. They had lived together the toughest years of their lives in that simple house. They had seen their daughter grow, they saw how she would fail, but they also had the opportunity to see her achieve all of her goals. Now if you show this...
