...My Reflections OMOWONUOLA EGBEYEMI-FALADE University of phoenix HCS 350 LITA TSAI June 19, 2014 My Reflections My Reflections from the Nursing Expertise Self –Report Scale (Garland, 1996, p. 197) indicates that I am a competent nurse at the moment on my unit as evidenced by my experience of 2 years as a registered nurse and “Typically, a nurse at the competent level has been in practice 2 to 3 years. This person can rely on a long-range of goals and plans to determine which aspects of a situation are important which can be ignored.’’(Berner & Berner, 1984)). My answers in the Self-Report scale from number 1,2,3,5,6, 7,14 and 15 reflects me as a competent nurse because I assist my patient first at all times, teach them about the management of their diseases and treatment , monitor frequently for safety since, identifying and managing of rapid changing situations, make right decisions about administering medication, giving therapeutic intervention at all times, monitoring and ensuring they have a quality health care services during their stay at the hospital by checking their vital signs and lab values for changes and use the information to make the best appropriate decision regarding their care.(Munjas,Barbara A, PhD., F.A.A.N., 1985). In conclusion, all information stands out important to me with my patient care at work. On number 9, I disagreed because that is not the best way to provide good nursing care. “Self-disclosure from the nurse needs to be limited...

...Jasmine K. Smith September 13, 2012 Reflection Of My Eating Habits First, I understand that my eating habits are not the best and I would love to change them. I do not eat according to the USDA food guide recommendations, because I never really paid attention to it and I am hardly every home so I always get food on the go, but I would like to start eating by it. Eating healthier is much better for you then always eating fast food and fried foods. Second, to make my diet better I would drink and use more low fat milk. I would cut back on drinking caffeine, because drinking a lot of caffeine can cause blockages and it can even cause cavities. I would better fit my diet by eating more starchy vegetables like green peas or green lima beans and stop eating junk food. I would not eat junk food because it can make you obese. I would use less salt and add spices, herbs, garlic, vinegar, or lemon juice to season foods or use no salt seasoning mixes. I would also try black or red pepper. Third, eating healthier is always better than eating unhealthy. Since I am not eating healthy and I love to eat fast food and fried foods like hamburgers. Fries, and fried chicken and fish, I would take steps to make my eating habits healthy. The steps I would take would eat more fruits. Maybe for lunch or for a snack I could eat a fruit salad. The next step I would approach is choosing meat like pork or chicken and eating them twice a week. I would eat more grains...

...hospital setting during the first month of my Foundation Degree Assistant Practitioner course. It will explore the importance of communication amongst the health care professionals and how a good nursing documentation is an integral part of nursing. It will also demonstrate how reflection enabled me to make sense of and learn from this experience, as well as identify any further learning developments needed to improve my practice and achieve the level of competency needed for when I qualify as an assistant practitioner. While discussing the knowledge underpinning practice, evidence based literature will be reviewed to support my discussion and for the purpose of reflection the essay will be written in the first person. Spouse, J, et al (2008). Jonhs, C (2009) defined reflection as learning through our every day experiences, towards realising one’s vision of desirable practice as a lived reality. He also added that it is a critical and a flexible process of self inquiry and transformation of being and becoming the practitioner you desire to be. However, Ghaye, T et al. (2000) stated that for the health care professionals to develop a more reflective posture, they must fully embrace both the principles and the practices of reflection. It is about becoming more aware of how we learn and how this affects what we think, feel and do. There are different models for reflection; some are more complex and detailed than others. To help me with my reflection, I have chosen Gibbs (1988) reflective...

...Examples of Reflective Writing Example 1 I arrived on the ward at 7:30 ready to begin a 12-hour shift. After receiving handover, my mentor assigned me the job of bathing Mr B with the help of a healthcare assistant. Mr B has Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a progressive disease of the nervous system with rapid deterioration due to spongiform encephalopathy. He is not expected to live to Christmas, even though he is only 19 years old. He is mentally aware of what is going on but is physically unable to demonstrate activities of daily living, including eating and drinking, has limited communication skills and is doubly incontinent. He is unsafe on his feet so mobilises with a wheelchair. I approached Mr B’s bed and asked his consent to take him for a bath. While the bath was running we began helping him to undress. He looked rather nervous. At the thought of myself being in his position, being the same age as him, I began to feel embarrassed too. I thought that I could not possibly be a professional individual if I let my embarrassment and sympathy get in the way of my nursing care. We assisted Mr B into the bath and started his wash. I knew he was uncomfortable and wanted to be able to wash himself, but was unable to do so. I was finding it difficult to look him in the eye, especially when it came to washing his genitalia. I tried to ease this by making conversation, but in a way this made matters worse. After the bath we dried Mr B, dressed him and returned him...

...Reflection has been proven to be an excellent teacher, especially after making an emotional based decision associated with parenting. Now that I have children in the third grade, reflecting on lofty expectations followed by a short temper after my hopes were dashed says a lot about leading by example. When reviewing various writings about parenting, pairing them with reflection on past behavior, it becomes very clear many lessons can be learned. Having patience, setting realistic goals and reacting to success or failure appropriately are all great marks to be judged by. While realizing no one is perfect, understanding the difficulties and struggles parents face with their children, as discussed by experts, having an owners manual for my children could come in very handy! Because parenting in general can by difficult, many studies have found the transition from infancy to adolescence even more difficult for fathers. Because the mother has time to bond with the child, specifically through labor and breastfeeding, fathers struggle to find a place and may not have appropriate time to bond. Some studies suggest playful interactions with their children as they grow can not only help a father bond with children but also help the father find and learn his role in parenting. (Machin, A. J. (2015). Remembering the early years of parenting, more...

...RA3 – Reflection of techniques Barometer of confidence +Using a scale system helped me identify what current level I felt I was. +Open questioning for the analysis of current level enabled me to explain why I felt I was at the current level stated and give examples to reinforce the level indicated. -The scale system though is relatively vague in regards to numbers and their value. It is through interpretation of their value in regards to how confident you are rather than a systematic and calculated approach. This means the level you suggest you are currently achieving could be over or under the realistic level. -Answering is subjective and could have an element of bias. There are no set criteria to base the level and descriptive answering on. Learning Styles Questionnaire +Questions asked reinforce a particular learning style when answers are collated, to make the claim to be stronger in a particular learning style more valid. +Questions can be related to the careers work that I do and therefore indicate the learning styles I tend to use in appointments. -Questions can be interpreted in a variety of situations, so the answers given may not truly reflect the learning styles being used. -Final scoring of answers given doesn’t indicate the scale of which a learning style is used. It is only an indication and further analysis would need to be used to definitively suggest the learning styles more suited to an individual. My results are fairly even and don’t indicate...

...GE 2218 Third Reflection Paper “Write your own script for your play” this is the most impressing point I have learnt form Mr. Ki ‘ s success on his career, which is also the major principle for his career management. In this talk, Mr. Ki shed light on the meaning of success from different perspectives and dimensions. I can tell from his career that he is satisfied with what he did in the past and what he is doing now. There are two essential factors I can draw from his experience, reinvent your career and refine your life. For the points that he raised in this talk, I quite endorsed his unique perception on career that it is divided into three phases. “ Work for success”, “ work for significance” and “ work for legacy”. Apart from myself, I guess most of the people value ones’ success by wealth and positions. Mr. Ki , however, adds to that life structure, purpose, identity and significance. Exemplified by Mr. Ki ‘s career, he retreated from his respected working position just at the prime of his career simply because he wanted to do something meaningful, not only to his life but also to the whole society. So he transfers his prowess to help and engage in social enterprise project. Reinventing one’s career is equally important in a sense that it helps put your career into perspective, and achieve a balance of life, just like what Mr. Ki mentioned, the second career, the parallel career and the social career. Besides, always reflect on you experience as well as have a full...

The next section analyses and explains the skill of taking a blood glucose level reading; known as a BGL that was preformed during an intensive workshop. ...Personal reflections are characterized as learning through experience in gaining new insights and changed perception of self and practices. Reflection can be a difficult experience without the support and guidance of an expert (Johns, 2004). This personal reflection presents an exciting opportunity for me to consider how successful my placement in the intermediate care has been in terms of my own personal learning. By reflecting on the positive aspects of the placement, I will be able to make sense of my personal learning and apply what I have learnt into future careers. At the beginning of my placement I knew very little about intermediate care or services it provided regarding alternatives to hospital care for elderly patients. In preparation for my placement, I visited a local health center and spoke to a therapist who agreed to send me information about intermediate care service. I familiarized myself with the services that are offered by intermediate care, for instance in house provisions and therapist group run services. This helped to alleviate some of my anxiety about the placement that I experienced during my first week, reflecting on my experiences has helped. During my placement I was allocated a mentor who was a knowledgeable and professional nurse. I learnt so much from my mentor, especially what it takes to be a crucial member of a rapid response team of the intermediate care service. Shadowing the mentor gave me the opportunity to observe all the rapid...
