...A Reflection of My School Experiences Danielle June 19, 2014 EDUC- My immersion into the education field began around 1978. Every Saturday, I would help my mother load up her car with musical instruments of all sorts, and head on over to the Community Center in one of the toughest neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Despite the grime and crime ridden neighborhood that the Center was located, on the inside, one would never know of the issues that existed on the outside. There, I met my first group of children with disabilities, children with Down’s Syndrome. My mom came here every Saturday to teach these students who were from the local orphanage, music. My job was to pass out the instruments and help where needed. The funny thing about my experience when I look back is that I NEVER saw those kids as being “different” I mean I noticed that they had mongoloid features and stubby fingers but they laughed and acted as silly as I did. I didn’t know it then, but that is when I got the “teaching bug.” They say it takes a special person to teach special education, and that is very true. My first classroom experiences may have made the toughest teacher quit. I’ve been spat at, had feces thrown on me, food tossed at me just to mention a few, but none of those incidences broke my spirit because I believed that I could, along with the help of my paraprofessionals, turn these students around. No, it wasn’t easy and I went home many a night crying and calling my mom asking her how she...

...As a freshman in high school, I have very few accomplishments as of now, but I hope that will change throughout my life. Besides achieving decent grades in school, I don’t really invest my time in anything productive and life changing. Although my life seems to lack meaning at this point, I’m satisfied with it because it is fun and interesting. A small accomplishment on a test or in a class won’t impact me in the grand scheme of my lifetime. However, if I must choose one, the most fulfilling accomplishment of mine was securing an internship. In the summer of 8th grade, I had very little activities planned, and I spent most of the first few weeks at home, doing nothing of importance. The days blended into weeks in my never-ending marathon of video games and occasional eating...

...A belief that I have come to hold after starting high school is that private schools fall short of the most important benefits that public schools have to offer. I have learned this through my own personal experience of going to a catholic grammar school for nine years, and then transitioning to the public high school that I currently attend. Of course, the main purpose of going to school is to gain a good education that will help you be successful in the future. This belief I do hold true; both private and public schools grant this opportunity. But public schools and private schools each grant an entirely different social experience, and the social experience, in my opinion, is much more valuable than the academic experience. Along with gaining an education, part of being successful in life is learning how to interact and form relationships with people who are different from you. In grammar school, the majority of the people I met were white, Catholic, and of the same learning ability. Every day at school, students were expected to wear uniform clothes, uniform hair styles, and learn at a uniform pace. There were no accommodations for people with slower learning paces; everyone was expected to keep up. Growing up, this is how I expected all schools were like. For nine years I was almost blinded to the fact that people of different religion and learning pace, even physical appearance, even existed in the real world. But the fact is there are more types of people than Catholics...

...Ronney Davis 08/30/2012 My reasons for coming to College During high school, I really did not think much, if at all, about going to college. I graduated from high school in 1982, after I graduated, I decided to join the military (US Army). I spent 10 years serving my country, but in 1992 decided to get out of the military. I moved to Philadelphia Pa, instead of returning to Chicago. I lived in Philadelphia pa for 14 years, where I worked as a chemical operator manufacturing and testing specialty chemicals for 13 of those years, but I lost my job once the plant I was working for closed. I worked odd jobs for two years, but never could find work I really wanted, so in October 2009 I decided to return home to Chicago. Once back in Chicago I could find work in the field I was looking for, so I took a Certified nursing assistant course (the job I’m working now), but Still not satisfied, so I started volunteering at my daughter school working with the staff, students and parents. I found myself working with teachers in over crowed classrooms. After the first year the school principal started noticing the work I was doing and was really impressed and asked had I ever considered going back to school and I said yes , but, and this started me to thinking . I have been around enough to know that that without education, I would never get anywhere in life, but I always found reasons for not taking the plunge, however after a lot of thinking , I realized that my reasons for not going to...

...In a society where individual integrity is often overshadowed by the exaggerated importance of perfection in the classroom, school honor codes serve as a guiding light to students. The establishment and retention of an honor code in my school is essential for a prosperous student culture of integrity and discipline. A code of honor provides students with the guidelines needed in order to be educated in a comfortable environment, one where “students and faculty [can] live in complete trust of one another” (Vangelli). This allows for a greater ease of learning and a more motivating environment for education. When a student follows a set of guidelines enacted specifically to “ensure moral action and thinking” (Vangelli), he or she is free to...

...My philosophy of school counseling includes building relationships with students of all backgrounds, having enthusiasm to help students, advocating for students success, and collaborating with parents and other school professionals. In building relationships as a school counselor, you have to interact with students, care about their personal lives and listen to their problems and share quality time with them. Students will feel safe, accepted and welcome every time they come to talk to me if they know that I am there to guide them. I believe that students from different cultures bring different experiences and background to the classroom. As a school counselor, I need to help teachers take advantage of these different perspectives as a basis for further learning in the classroom. I also have to convey to respect and appreciate different points of view and beliefs. It is also essential to create opportunities for students to talk about their learning experience in school and at home. In fact, my role as a counselor is to listen to students in order to think more about the inside of the students and their homes instead of just the outside of their situation....

...My high school career was nothing like Troy Bolton’s in High School Musical. There was no random singing, and I never danced and sang on a golf course. This does not mean I did not enjoy high school. Of course there were ups and downs, but life has its fair share of ups and downs. I hope I am able to remember how high school was for me in my future. Because my memory of high school is already not as good as I wish it was. My experiences before high school, were the reasons for how I was in high school. I was raised to always do my best at whatever I was doing, no matter what I was doing. In elementary school I was the shy kid and stayed to myself. But this was because I changed elementary schools a handful of times. After I become familiar with my place at my new schools I become friendly with the ones that I was around. What set me up for success was that I started playing football on a Pop Warner team. In middle school I was apart of sports and clubs. I was also recognized as the Cheney Federal Credit Union student of the year my eighth grade year at WMS....

...In middle school, I could care less about school. I had so many other things that was going on in my life that were so much more important. I got offered so many opportunities to get the help I needed in order to succeed but I just never took advantage of it. I have ADHD and it’s very hard for me to concentrate during class. During class I would always either go to the restroom just so I could leave or I would start doodling on my notebook. I had one full notebook full of doodles. On almost all of my homework assignments I had at least four doodles in each and every one of the doodles. In middle school, we had to take benchmarks and if we failed we had to go to Saturday academy. I failed my math benchmark in sixth and seventh grade....

...My high school years will forever be a part of who I am. The past four years have been a vital experience in helping me develop, learn, and explore who I am. Without my high school experience, I would not be the same person I am now. My high school gave me a fantastic learning environment. I was able to take challenging courses that interested me, like AP Psychology, AP European History and Honors English classes. The decision to take Honors English classes my junior and senior year were two of the best academic decisions I've made, as my teachers were great mentors and encouraged me to pursue my goals and interests. Taking these classes helped shape my study habits, writing skills, and my outlook on the world. My classes were engaging,...

...never felt so accomplished in my life before; I have been waiting since every young for this day to come. I always hated school the result of its long hours behind a desk listening to a teacher lecture about a subject. The same routine for thirteen years, starting with kindergarten having to wake up early to get to school, then after school go home to do homework, and sleep. With being so eager to graduate, I never took a second to pause and just take it in to appreciate my life. Graduating high school was one of my most important goals in life; unfortunately, it went by too quick and wished there was a way to go back on this special day to relive it. At the end of the day, I could not believe I just graduated and wouldn’t have to...

...enriched my high school experience. I was the captain of the girls cross country team and of the track and field team. I was responsible of leading the runners throughout workouts and races with positivity. I also have been an active member in clubs including Medi-careers and Hispanic Youth Leadership Council. Medi-careers club gave me the opportunity to learn about different professions in the medical field. In the Hispanic Youth Leadership Council club, I have worked with others to spread the Hispanic culture through events that spread the unique traditions. Helping others overcome economic and psychological challenges has truly help form the person I am today. I have volunteered at the Salvation Army by serving food to homeless individuals on Sundays. Sometimes the community forgets about homeless individuals and they are human beings who need support. They share their hardships with me and I try to be someone they can talk to so they don't feel lonely. I have also volunteered in Project Blanket which is an organization that helps make fleece blankets for low-income individuals and for cancer patients. We then distribute the blankets to local hospitals and churches....

...Being raised by an impoverished Hispanic family led to my parents desiring the very best for me. A preconception that friends were distractions and that education was the first priority was instilled within me from a very young age. At first, throughout my years in Meadowbrook Elementary and Seminole Middle school, I was able to keep up with all of my academics by myself. Soon, however, this concept of a free for all environment within a high school setting was, in hindsight, a disadvantage in the long run. By not creating those ever-lasting connections with other students from an early age, I entered high school as a lone wolf, which resulted in carrying all of my academics on my own shoulder compared to others who worked amongst each other to be more...

...My time in high school has been a long and hard one. I encountered many terrible challenges within a very short amount of time. The last four years of my life has been a rapid fire succession of terrible news. The first hardships I encountered were my Latin classes at Hill and my aunt’s battle with cancer that ended ultimately with death during the week leading up to the beginning of my high school career. I had no interest in Latin; I received terrible marks; but I persevered, because I was afraid to show weakness. This extended to my feelings of grief over my aunt’s death, I buried it deep. I never was able to even attend her funeral because she lived in Serbia, in my mother’s old country. I came to a revelation from my aunt’s death. Three out of the four members of my family who have died, died of cancer. I came to grips with my own mortality in my freshman year and the highly likely chance I will have cancer. It is a hard concept for anyone to understand, especially a teenager....

...In the summer before ninth grade, I was given an educational opportunity that impacted my life. One day, I got called up to a room full of people with three advisors that were sitting at a corner table. There was a big group of people who were signing up for the program called, “Trio.” At first, I did not know what this program was. However, as I listened to them speak, I learned what the program Trio was. The trio is a program that assists students with their academic classes and helps prepare them for college. Their assistance provides students with various academic options that can help them become successful. After I attended my first year of high school, advisors from the Trio program were pulling me out of class almost every week to discuss...
