...Boogeyman Summary The three children of the separated family father Lester Billings are dead, like a psychiatrist tells, killed by the Boogeyman. The worst thing for Billings is that he has suspected that, when his first child died, and was sure, when his second child died. Still he admitted that the Boogeyman took his third child. Now he believes that the Boogeyman will take him too, and he is afraid to open his closets at home. His psychiatrist, Dr.Harper understands him well, too well. At the entering to the lobby, there is no one to help him and when he return into the room, Lester Billings finds the psychiatrist taking off his mask to show him that he is the boogeyman, the person who had killed his three children. Point of view The short story has a third person narrator, but the use of direct speech almost makes it seem like a first person monologue by Lester Billings. We get a deep look into his psyche whereas the psychiatrist we only know little about. Main Character Lester Billings is an arrogant sissy. He thinks the best of himself and is irascible when contradicted. He is also violent, selfish a male chauvinist and has about every other negative Characteristics one can think of. It is interesting why he has become like that, and I believe the course lies in the way he was brought up .He was over protected by his mother, with whom he now has no contact and he thinks overprotective parents make frighten and weak kids.Lester is afraid his own children will...

...Stolpestad by William Lychack (2008) Have you ever felt that your life is just being repeated? Nothing new happens, nothing that you aren’t used to. Your life continues as you know it, and it bores you. This is what this story Stolpestad (marker) by William Lychack, from 2008, is about. The story is about a man named Stolpestad, who is a police officer. On yet another lazy Saturday he receives a call and has to deal with a young boy’s suffering dog. He is not pleased with the task and it tortures him to see the dog suffering - knowing what has to be done. He has to shoot the dog twice in order to stop its suffering. Stolpestad then continues his lazy Saturday evening - spending some time in a bar, calling his wife to say he will be home late. Everything is like a blur. He returns to his home, just to find out that the boy and his father is waiting for him. They want to thank him for his bravery and tell him that the dog didn’t die. Stolpestad lives in a little town and he has been living there from his very early years. For him his life is just the same as it has always been. It’s like he is stuck and he doesn’t go any further - it’s the same routine day after day and all this is the main theme. From the very beginning there is a good example on the setting in the story and how he feels about it on page 1, line 2-3: “(...) - sun never burning through the clouds, clouds never breaking into rain (...)”. Here the whether symbolize...

...Manual Critique Nathan Coffman ENG/221 October 6, 2014 Nancy Henderson Manual Critique I will start by saying that I chose a manual completely at random. For my critique I chose to use a manual I found online for an Avaya 3920 wireless telephone. The five criteria I had set for the manual beforehand were: it needed to be written in the second person, it needed to have a table of contents, it needed to be easy to understand/non-technical, the terminology needed to stay consistent throughout, and the manual needed to appear professional. The first thing that I noticed when the manual opened was that the first few pages were essentially legal notices. There was also a portion about the author/s making their best effort to make sure everything was accurate at the time of writing. I thought that was a good way to start. They seemed to cover all of their bases from a legal perspective. After getting through the legal notices, I found the table of contents. Ding, Ding, Ding, it matched one of my criteria. The table of contents was laid out, in my opinion, just the way it should have been. It started out with the introduction and all things a person would expect with that. (Welcome, brief description of the manuals layout, and it gave a website where the user can get more information.) The other sections in the table of contents were mainly for installation and setup. After I got through examining the table of contents I started to read the actual manual. The main...

...doing so I would answer my phone and not say a word then I would jot down my observations of the other persons response. However, before I started my violation survey I was really quite worried. It doesn’t matter if you’re in China or America; it’s an impolite behavior to not answer or greet when someone phones you. Perhaps the person calling me might think I accidently hit the wrong button or something, which would potentially lead to them hanging up and redialing me again. I assume if I don’t answer within 5 seconds the person calling me would just hang-up and try again or try text messaging me. The past few days that I have been attempting the survey has been a bit difficult for me because I am use to always answering with “hello.” However, I made a concerted effort and achieved good results for this project. My friend, Savina, and I were planning on hanging out Thursday afternoon. I waited for her to pick me up at the CRCC business building. She called me when she arrived, and I answered her phone call, but didn’t say a word. This (non-conversation) silence lasted for 23 seconds and then she asked “hello Caroline, are you there?” I did not expect this patient reaction from her. After we met, I asked her why she waited on the phone for a whole 23 seconds instead of saying something immediately. Her response to why she didn’t say something sooner and instead waited 23 seconds was because she assumed I was really busy at the moment and needed a few seconds before answering her...

...Point of View There are three different points of view (also known as perspectives) a writer can use: First Person, Second Person, and Third Person. First Person: Writers using the first person point of view write from their own point of view: “I believe” “I think” “I saw” To understand first person perspective, imagine you are telling your friend about your day. Usually, when you tell someone about your own experiences, you use the first person perspective because it tells the reader what you thought, felt or did. Second Person: Writers using second person point of view write from the reader’s point of view: “You believe” “You think” “You saw” To understand the second person perspective, imagine you are giving a speech to your class- mates about how to bake a cake. Instructions are often given in the second person point of view because it tells the reader what to think, feel, or do. The second person can also be used when a writer is addressing a familiar audience. Third Person: Writers using the third person point of view write from an anonymous observer’s point of view: “He/She believes” “The philosopher thinks” “The witness saw” To understand third person perspective, imagine a camera that views what is going on around it: The camera cannot say, “I think this is good,” or “I think this is bad.” Also, it cannot say, “You think this is good,” or “You think this is bad.” The camera can only show what it records and allows the viewer...

The objective was to rate the second image’s emotion from one to six, with one being terribly upset and six being tremendously happy (Project Implicit, 2011). When I first started the test, I found myself feeling flustered because I was distracted by the other images. Because the images are only shown for a short period of time, this distraction caused me to miss the second image I was...

...it is a social norm to either put it off or put it in a silent mode. But for my breaching experiment I wanted to break this social norm by going to the library and put my phone on, on full volume and see how people around me would react. Some of the reactions were surprising, but others were not. The people’s reaction made me think how much one can trust a person to help you in time of need, and the reason some people act in the a manner that they do. I did my breaching experiment on a Saturday afternoon, I went into a study library in the university, put my headphones in the phone, (in order to convince people I was listening to music), and begun to read. After some time, my friend came so that to assist me in accomplishing the experiment. He was to assist me by calling my number. When he got in I knew everything was ready for my experiment. After he settled he started calling my phones without anybody else’s knowledge. My friend told me he did that by making it look like he was texting, and from his observation none of the people in the room noticed we were linked, until after the experiment when I told them what I was doing. Once I got informed my phone was ringing, I went out of the room to make it look like I was calling back the person who had called. After sometimes, I came back in order to observe what people in the room thought of what happened. I did the experiment two times. The second time I...

...“investigative” person means, you like to discover and research ideas. Meanwhile you also like to observe, investigate, ask questions, and experiment. Key skills include being able to think analytically and logically, communicating by writing and speaking, designing, calculating, and diagnosing. Most of these people develop these skills through subjects such as: English, Math, Science, Computing, and Technology. Career routes for these people include: medical and health occupations, Chemist, Marine Scientist, Forestry Technician, Zoologist, and Dentist. Once i figured out what “investigative” people are, I realized that there was no way that this fits me. I felt very surprised when I got these results as well, this is because none of the characteristics of an “investigative” person even come close to being what I enjoy or am intrigued...

...together that mean something different from their individual meanings. Leaving a space after a comma was another mistake I incurred. Although it is just a simple mistake that I overlooked, it still affects the professionalism of my paper. It was also revealed that you do not capitalize the word president unless you are referring a specific president or stating the President of the United States. I also learned that if two words function as an adjective, they should be connected with a hyphen. For example, real time should be real-time. My review from WritePoint was better than I thought regarding my editing changes. Regarding the revision changes, according to WritePoint brought out that I use the passive voice. When writing an essay the passive voice can tend to agitate the reader because your paragraphs become officious and tedious. You must remain consistent with the active voice while writing. For example I wrote, “Within the same study it was indicated that 35% of Americans watched political videos online.” To remain consistent with an active voice throughout the sentence the writer should write, “Within the same study statistic revealed that 35% of Americans watched political videos online.” Replacing “it was indicated” with “statistics revealed” allowed my active voice to stay consistent and not agitate the reader. Another revision change that WritePoint identified was wordiness. Simplifying a sentence is one of the easiest errors to correct. You have to look for that extra...

...Anne Frank, a brave hero to all Jews. Here are my reasons towards why I believe she said that deeply heartfelt quote. My first reason to why I believe she said, "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart," is because she was a very optimistic person. Another reason I believe she said that is because she was a nice and caring person. My last reason to why I believe she said that is because she was a very brave and heroic person. Now I'll be explaining my reasons more in depth. To start off, as I said before I believe she said that because she is very optimistic. Here is another quote that I found in the collections book that shows how she is optimistic, " I'm going to be a famous dancer or singer... or something wonderful." That shows how she is optimistic because she doesn't know if she is...
